There was an old mule(骡子). One day accidentally he fell into the farmer's well. The farmer thought for a while and said to himself that neither the well nor the old mule was important to him. So he decided to use soil to bury the old mule in the well.

    Then the farmer called his neighbours and they started to put the soil into the well together. The old mule was quite afraid in the beginning. But soon one hopeful idea came to his mind - every time when a shovel(铁铲) of soil landed on his back, he would shake it off and step up!

He said these words to himself again and again, "Shake it off and step up." This way he could fight against the panic (恐慌) and encourage himself. After some time, the mule had stepped over the well's wall. Although terribly tired, he was the winner and he saved his own life. He decided to face his difficulty bravely and not to give up, and finally he won.

    One day, Allan and his friend Henry went swimming in a river. It was very hot. How happy they were in the river! After they got out of the water, they played games in the sun for a while.

    On their way back, Henry saw some flowers. He liked flowers very much and ran into the green field to look at them. Now Allan was walking by himself.

    Then he heard Henry calling out, "A snake! Help! ..."

    "What's wrong with you?" asked Allan.

    "A snake bit（咬）me in the leg. Come here!"

    Allan ran over and saw a small red wound（伤口）on Henry' s leg.

    "The snake was in the grass. I didn't see it."

    "Sit down quickly"! Allan told Henry.

    Allan put his mouth at the little red wound and began to suck（吸）at it. In this way he saved Henry's life. "Oh, Allan, it's very kind of you to help me."

    "That's all right. We are friends and we must always help each other."

    Mary is a worker. She works in a glass factory in London. Mary doesn't work on Sunday. She usually gets up early. She doesn't like staying at home. After breakfast she often drives the red car to see her friend Jane. Jane is a doctor. She lives with her parents near London. Mary drives to Jane's hour in about forty minutes. He takes the dog to meetings and he takes the dog to lunch. When there is telephone call for my boss, I always know if he is in the office. I only look under his desk. If I see something brown and hairy (毛绒绒的) under it, I know my boss is somewhere in the office. If there is no dog, I know my boss is out.
