Street Markets Around the World

    There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:

    There are many "floating markets" in Asia; perhaps the most unusual(非同寻常) is in Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damned Saduak. It's open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.

    Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It's the home of a colorful flower market. It's open every day except(除了) Monday. On Monday, instead of(替代) flowers, there's a wonderful bird market.

    One of the world's famous markets is in Mexico City(墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs(草本) and medicine. There're all kinds of things. It's open every day from early in the morning till late at night.

    In England, on Saturday and Sunday thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it's the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Sometimes you can find a job easily, by walking into a local store and looking at its notice board(布告栏). Local stores often have areas for people to put small signs telling the services that they need or they can provide. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    Another popular tool for finding a job is the Internet. For example, people around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy things, meet people or find a job.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

    Another useful way to find a job is through a university. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Many college students like this way better.

    At times, some experts(专业人士)can also help people find a job. Susan Miller has her own company called California Job Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find a job by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} So with her help, many people have succeeded in finding a good job.

    When I was young, my family lived a hard life in the country. The roads in the country are not good. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} One evening we were visiting some relatives and the weather was very bad.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Dad carried me on his back. Mum gave her coat to my brother. We walked together in the rain for more than one hour.

    I was fat at that time and Dad held me for a long time.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} He almost fell down many times. I tried to get down and walk myself, but I couldn't do anything because I was just a little kid.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} The rain had come through the leak(有裂缝的) roof and water was everywhere. Mum put bowls all around the house to try to catch the rain. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} She carefully placed us on the remaining dry place. I fell asleep soon. When I opened my eyes, I found Dad and Mum were sleeping in chairs, both having caught a bad cold.

    In the Middle Eastern country of Lebanon, there are more than 1 million refugees (难民). Youssef was 10 years old when a local Syrian musician discovered his talent: a deep, powerful voice-well-suited to traditional songs. However, Syria's civil war took place soon. He and his family lost their home.

    When the Action for Hope Music School announced that it was looking for talented children to train, his family encouraged him to attend the school. A year and a half later, Youssef, with another 11 children, was chosen to take part in a concert.

    Youssef, a shy boy, was a lead singer in the concert. He gave a confident performance of traditional Syrian songs. "We only heard the sound of a mortar(迫击炮）. It fell near us. A whole building came down. That is all I remember," said Youssef. "Music makes me forget everything. Music is the most important thing."

    Basma, director of Action for Hope, said," The music school offers children who suffer from the war strength (力量). They can find a good way to express themselves and stop thinking of themselves as refugees."

    "Art gives strength. It comes from the ability to create," Basma said, "People who are in difficult conditions need this strength much more than the rich."
