Passage 1 Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

It is an interesting story about a girl named Alice, who follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole and finds herself in Wonderland. She not only finds the White Rabbit, but also meets other animals such as the Dormouse and the Caterpillar. During her adventure, Alice eats and drinks things that make her change in size. At last, Alice enters a garden, where she happens to see a trial(审判). The Knave of Hearts is accused of(被指控) stealing the Queen of Hearts' tarts (甜馅饼), while the King of Hearts is the judge. As Alice argues with the Queen, the Queen becomes angry with Alice and orders her men to kill Alice. In the end, Alice grows to a huge size and knocks over the playing cards. Suddenly, Alice wakes from her dream.

The classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, an English author, was fantastic and entertaining. It took you to a world of fantasy. The entire storyline is so imaginative. Alice, with her pleasant personality is attractive. It is one of the classics needed to complete your bookshelf.

Passage 2 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

It is an interesting story about a girl named Dorothy, who is taken away from her home in a storm and finds herself in the Land of Oz. Dorothy, together with her companions the Tin Woodman who wants a heart, the Scarecrow who wants a brain and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage, journeys in search of the wizard, in order to return home. After facing many difficulties they successfully meet the Great Oz, who in fact is not a wizard. However, the old man gives the Scarecrow a brain made of pins and needles, the Tin Woodman a heart made of silk and filled with sawdust, and the Cowardly Lion a bottle of courage. In the end, Dorothy finally gets home to where her aunt and uncle live. They are very glad to see her safe and sound.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, is an enjoyable American classic .What I loved most were Dorothy's trustworthy friends, who were always there when Dorothy needed help. Dorothy is also loved by everyone for her sweetness and honesty. If you have not read it, why don't you give yourself a treat?

When you visit a restaurant, you may see some people eating on their own. In the past, these people might feel embarrassed about eating alone, because this might show that they had no friends or disliked making friends with others. However, that's changing.

According to a new survey of an American company, the adult eats six meals alone each week and 387 meals each year on average. That means eating alone is a new fashion. In China, eating alone is also growing in popularity.

It is true that when people choose to eat with other people, they must be affected by the diners who are with them. If the diners share similar habits, they are lucky and can enjoy a good meal. If not, they must deal with the embarrassing experience of bad table manners, and boring conversations. So eating alone can help people get away from bad dinner dates, embarrassing groups and boring conversations and let them enjoy the personal experience. Wang Kerui, a freshman from Beijing Normal University , is a good example. "Eating alone doesn't mean I'm lonely. Instead, it can help me enjoy 'me-time' and think about the challenges I have met in my studies," she told TEENS.

Eating alone also shows that young people pay more attention to realizing their dreams and looking for a higher quality of life. Now, many young people with fixed incomes(固定收入) are beginning to re-examine their roles in society. Zhao Lianxue, 28, a media worker, says she enjoys her life alone. Without the task of cooking for a family, Zhao often eats alone in restaurants. In her spare time, she can read her favorite books, listen to music, go sightseeing or shopping. It's not hard to see that eating alone for many young people. It doesn't mean they feel lonely. It is more about freedom and independence.

Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词, 使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词, 首字母已给):

Online eating shows have been popular recently. Many hosts also become popular for their ability to eat lots of food. However, some people don't like this show because of their waste of food. While some hosts can eat up all the food, others may p{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to eat a lot of food on camera, but actually throw it away later.

To stop this practice, many video and livestreaming (直播) platforms, have removed videos that show food waste, and have spread messages to "Stop food waste and eat properly i{#blank#}2{#/blank#}" .

A research shows that people waste about 1.3 billion tons of food every year in the world. In China, 50 million tons of food is wasted every year. Therefore, in June 2020, people were w{#blank#}3{#/blank#} by many scientists that the world would face the worst food shortage in 50 years.

Our government have been aware of the serious problem and decided to take action. Recently, activities a{#blank#}4{#/blank#} food waste have been further encouraged. In August, President Xi Jinping called on people to eat safe food and stop wasting it.

The owners of most large restaurants began to control the number of dishes for their customers. In some places, the owners ask customers to take the "N-1 mode". That is to say, a group of 10 people should only order enough for nine people at first. M{#blank#}5{#/blank#} food is only brought to the table if they really need it.

At the same time, there is a nationwide activity online, called "Clear Your Plate". Users are encouraged to share photos or videos of empty plates after f{#blank#}6{#/blank#} their meals.

Meanwhile, new laws are being considered and soon they will give people clear i{#blank#}7{#/blank#} on avoiding food waste. This would help us save a lot of food. We firmly believe these requirements will make a difference to our life.

I took a three﹣month training course on acupuncture and tuina. You wouldn't believe I overcame my sleeping problem with traditional methods. I also made some changes to my lifestyle according to the Five Elements Theory(五行说).

Welcome to Classic Reading. I'm your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I'vebecome interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry. I have also known some Chinesepoets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet HeZhizhang. Here is an English version(版本)of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator ofancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let's take a look at his translation.

Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young,

Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue.

My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I.

"Where are you from, dear sir?" they ask with beaming eyes.

In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace. It's been decades(数十年)since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent. Things did not change much, butthe people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem.

Personally, I like this poem because it reminds me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or forhow long I've been away, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart. I hope youcan enjoy this poem as much as I do. See you next time!

 阅读下面材料, 在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
