Happiness has become a big deal in the past ten years. Hundreds of books, lectures and even the media tell us that happiness is within our reach. All we have to do is follow some simple steps, like meditation, living in the moment and doing yoga. In fact, feeling deeply sad is a normal part of the healing (治愈) process.

It's said that if you are going through a hard time, it's important to do what you can to feel better.

Perhaps they can work for you too.

But if you're not anywhere near an ocean, lake or river, looking at images of moving water on TV can make you feel peaceful.

We have to get our happiness where we can find it. If you have lost the ability to find any pleasure in your daily life or the people around you, something deeper is going on.

Think about the times you were at your happiest. That may sound a little strange.

We can't allow natural and normal emotional low points rule our lives, but we can't ignore them either. They must be processed, so we can move on.

A. Getting close to nature can help cheer you up.

B. Looking at water while in nature can be calming.

C. You'd better get yourself checked out by a medical doctor.

D. Here are some ways that have helped me and many people.

E. Talk with your friends and try to find your happiness from them.

F. But if you are going through a really difficult time, none of this may feel right.

G. But doing this actually sends chemicals to your brain, and it can make you feel better.

Injuries and deaths caused by driving after drinking are preventable. Sadly, actions by the police can only catch a small number of drunk drivers on the roads. It is up to each person to make the decisions. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} So we should help guide our friends and persuade them to avoid driving after drinking. Here are some tips.

Make last efforts. If all else fails and a drunk person wants to drive home, threaten to call the police or take his keys. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} When he is not concentrated, take his keys. This may make it easier to convince him to take a cab home. Remember, don't give him the keys even if he's angry.

All languages change over time, but some change at a faster rate than others. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The most important factors are the number of people who speak a language, where they live and whether they move around, the importance of the language for world trade and communication, and changes in technology.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} However, today English is the most widely used language in the world. English is spoken by about 350 million people as a first language in countries such as Great Britain, the United States. In addition, about a billion more people speak English as a second language.

English started to take over French as an international language during the period of British colonialism (殖民主义) when the English ruled many countries in Africa and Asia. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The colonial period came to an end at the same time that several other changes occurred. For example, the U.S. started to play a greater part in global affairs and the international economy. New means of communication technology such as television and the Internet spread English worldwide. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} In addition, they could use the Internet for information, business, or e-mail communication, all in English. Just as the use of English spread, other languages changed English by contact or by new inventions and technology.

In contrast, Icelandic is a language that has changed very slowly. Icelandic speakers today can understand poetry written in a slightly different dialect over 1,000 years ago! Why has Icelandic changed so slowly? The main reason is the isolated (孤立的) location of the island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Compared to England, Iceland had no history of colonialism. Iceland's small population has not played a major role in international trade or communication. Today, most Icelanders speak English in addition to their native language. With outside influences, Icelandic is changing more rapidly now.

A. People everywhere could watch the news or sports events in English.

B. These changes have a great influence on the development of society.

C. Isolation meant that for hundreds of years, Icelanders had little contact with speakers of other languages.

D. What are some of the factors that influence how quickly a language changes?

E. The language communication brings about the communication of technology.

G. English was the primary means of communication in these colonies.

How to Bring Our Community Together

Canada is a nation that prides itself on multiculturalism and the opportunity. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Building social connections and a sense of belonging brings people together in ways that strengthen individual relationships as well as the whole community.

There are several things that we can do to develop strong social connections and a sense of belonging :

{#blank#}2{#/blank#} One of the simplest ways to bring a community together is through shared experiences. Events like an international food festival, a sports league featuring activities from around the world, and health and wellness programs drawing on different cultures, are excellent ways of bringing people together.

Think outside the box. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Many of us get caught up in our own routines and practices and forget that there are other ways of doing things. Try talking to different community members, ranging from youths to seniors, to understand their opinions of the world. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} .

Try new things. Positively influencing our community can go beyond volunteering our time and resources.

Consider getting involved in our community by working for the 2017 Census(人口普查)as an enumerator (普查员) or a crew leader. Census enumerators are responsible for identifying dwellings on maps, conducting personal interviews, and following up respondents in person and by phone, while crew leaders are responsible for leading, training and supervising a team of enumerators. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A strong feeling of unity in a community can make residents feel comfortable and at home.

A. Plan community events.

B. Encourage community members to do some community service work.

C. Social connections offer community members chances to know each other better.

D. Our multicultural tradition provides a welcoming environment for individuals and families.

E. Learning about different cultures and practices can open our mind to a whole new way of life.

F. Invite individuals of different cultures to participate in community planning to ensure that every voice is heard.

G. These positions provide an opportunity to meet new people and build relationships with members of our

community.
