A British man learned the skills to perform Beijing Opera, making people enjoy his lively performance of the Monkey King.

Ghaffar Pourazar, born in Iran, is full of interest about China. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera which professionals from Beijing performed in London. Ghaffar fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes, excellent shows and so on. So after one year, he arrived in China alone and became a student of Beijing Opera at a Beijing school.

At the age of 32, he had to learn with children every day. For him, it was difficult to learn the dialogue in Beijing Opera and it was even his biggest obstacle. But he never gave up.

Four years later, he began to learn to perform the Monkey King, a traditional character(人物) from the Chinese classic story Journey to the West. He arrived in the workroom an hour earlier than other performers and also bought books and CDs to better understand the character. He once got a top international prize(奖品) for performing the Monkey King.

To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art form in schools in the US, Britain and other countries. Ghaffar led(带领) a group of actors to perform 66 times in a month and a half in the United States. He also led a 48-member team to perform in Malaysia. In the past 10 years, he has performed(已经表演了) more than 400 shows.

Once there was a teenage boy who was known as a fast runner in his village. He only cared about winning every race and becoming more successful.

One day,the boy took part in a running race in his village. He won the 200, 100 and 50-meter races without any problem. He was proud of himself and received great applause (掌声). But his grandfather stepped in and challenged him to a race with two unexpected competitors, an old man and a blind girl. The boy thought it was unbelievable but accepted. In the race, the boy finished first, while the old man and the blind girl were still at the starting line. With joy, he waved his hands at the crowd. But they kept silent.

"Why are people not cheering for me like before?" he asked his grandfather.

"Start the race again with them. But this time, all of you should cross the finish line at the same time," the grandfather replied.

The boy was surprised but agreed to the race. During the second race, the boy took the hands of the old man and the blind girl and walked slowly with them to the finish line. The crowd gave them a standing applause.

The boy asked his grandfather, "For whom are the people cheering? Is it for me, or them?" The grandfather smiled and said. "The crowd did not cheer for any one of you. They cheered for how you all ran the race together. Facing the race of life, what matters is not just winning, but how you run the race."

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧场). He has let me use his 1 to raise money for youth at risk programs.

The last time I was there he told me his story. When he was young, his family is too 2 to have a house to live in. As a 3 , he had a poor childhood. When he was in high school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven- page paper describing his goal of 4 a horse ranch. He also drew a picture to show a 4000- square- foot house that would sit on a beautiful farm. The next day he 5 it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F. Roberts asked, "Why did I 6 an F?" His teacher said, "This is a (an)7 dream for a young boy like you. A horse ranch requires a lot of money. " Then the teacher added, "If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic (现实的) goal, I will reconsider your grade. "

The boy went home and thought about it for a (an)8 and hard time. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, "Look, son, you have to have your own mind on this. " Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no 9 at all. He told his teacher, "You could keep the F and I still keep my dream. "

Monty tells me this story because I am sitting in his 4000- square- foot house in the middle of my 200- acre horse ranch. He said a lot of kids' dream can be stolen. Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what happens. 10 he had enough courage not to give up his dream.

Do the British eat in the same way as the Chinese? What different habits do they have in eating?

People in the UK do not usually have porridge or noodles for breakfast like the Chinese. They eat bread instead. Hot tea, coffee and milk are their usual breakfast drinks.

In the UK, lunch is taken at about 1:00 pm, later than that in China. While Chinese people like a hot, filling lunch, many British people today may just have a sandwich, especially if they work in a busy city like London. There are also differences in the way pupils eat lunch. In the past, British children ate hot lunches at school, as most children in China do now, but the food was different. Today, it is more common for British pupils to bring their own lunches to school. They will usually eat a sandwich and a piece of fruit, and drink fruit juice or other soft drinks. Some children like to buy food from shops outside the school, but often this is not allowed.

The evening meal is the most important meal in both countries. In China people have dinner at about 6:00 pm, and so do many people in the UK. In most families in the UK, there's meat with two or three vegetables and something sweet. But in China, people often have more dishes, and usually with soup.
