Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl who lived with her father in the forest. One day, a lion came to their house and told the father to let the girl 1 him. The father and the girl were very 2 of the lion. He knew that if his daughter did not get married to the lion, the lion would be very angry and kill them 3. So he had to find a way of 4  the lion.

    After thinking a lot, he said to the lion, "I will be 5 to marry my daughter to you, but she is very afraid of your teeth and claws. If you let me take 6 all out, you can marry her. I am sure my daughter will then make a good 7."

    "No problem!" The lion said. He could  8 think of how much he loved the girl and wanted her to be his wife. So he let the father take out all his teeth and claws. As soon as the lion was toothless and clawless, the father began hitting him 9 a heavy stick. The lion could not defend himself 10 he had no teeth, or claws. Finally, he ran away. He was also unable to kill animals for food. So he soon died.

    Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Brown, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck-a game show. My best friend Nancy and I both 1 it. Nancy has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history. So we thought we'd be good 2 for the team.

    A few days later, Mr. Brown held a meeting with everyone interested in the 3 .He told us that Smart Aleck used a five-member team and three more people would be needed as backup (替补). Mr. Brown said we would have a 4 among all the students present and the top eight scorers would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a 5 way to decide.

    Yesterday, all of the hopefuls got together. Mr. Brown acted as the host. After a couple of hours, all the places on the team were set 6 one. Nancy and I tied(打成平手)for that last position. We had to hold a one-on- one competition. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the 7 .

    Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull 8 . Then I saw the look on Nancy's face. I waited for a second and knew 9 I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Nancy wanted it even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Nancy 10 , just by a little bit.     Was I 13 by not trying as hard as I could? I don't think so. No one noticed, and Nancy and I didn't say it. It won't hurt the team 14Nancy will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the 15 thing to do.

    Jack was very excited (兴奋的).It was his first time to visit a city in China. Jack arrived in the afternoon.

 When he found a cool wall to rest on, an old woman walked over and said," Child, you look very tired but you didn't sell a single bread, right?"

 The boy asked in a low voice," What do you suggest I should do now?"

" Don't sell it any more. Go home quickly, my poor child." The old woman kindly said and then left.

A young man heard their conversation and he walked over. He said to the boy,"I don't agree with her. You should keep waiting. Don't lose your heart." The boy looked up at the young man and his eyes were full of hope again. After a while, the boy walked back to sell his bread.

 Suddenly, a car stopped. A young woman in the car said to the boy," Hey, little boy. It's good to see you here. I want to buy all your bread for the children in our Hope House."

Andy opens his eyes to the warm sun of a new day. He jumps out of his 1 and runs to his mom's room.

"Get up!Mommy!"Andy calls out 2 !"Do you know what day today is?"
