Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way.And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competitions.

A company in California,US,has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website.

That is,if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device(设备)called “iSmell” with your computer. This smart little device contains(包含)some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.

The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition(成分)of different smells into digital signals(数字信号).An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the“ iSmell" device. The device will use the software to change' the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code(代码)from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.

In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”,which contains a digital index of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to integrate(合成)the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies.Imagine audiences getting the smell of rocket fuel as a spacecraft takes off on the cinema screen!Of course, filmmakers will have to be careful not to shoot in dirty neighborhoods, which have a lot of rubbish lying around.

It is a question that has confused parents for many years: why do children refuse to eat greens?

Now, two American experts believe they have the answer.

After studying dozens of babies as they played with various objects, the researchers noted that they were far more unwilling to touch plants than other things. They believe this is because evolution (生物进化) has biologically made children be wary of plants.

Due to susceptibility (敏感性) to illness or injury in the early years of life, the body has designed an inner defence mechanism (内部保护机制) that limits a child' s contact with plants, they think. The researchers believe this is why children turn their noses up when faced with a plate of broad beans.

The findings are published in a paper by Dr Annie E Wertz and Dr Karen Wynn, both psychologists at Yale University.

They wrote, "Throughout human evolution... plants have been important in human's life. Yet, for all of these benefits, plants have always caused very real dangers."

"Plants produce toxins (毒素) as defences that can be harmful, or even deadly. Some plants also produce physical defences, such as thorns(荆棘)can damage tissues (组织) and cause effects over the whole body."

They added, "We predicted that babies may have behavioural strategies that reduce dangers caused by plants."

To test their theory, the researchers studied how children aged eight to 18 months old reacted when presented with a variety of objects. It took much longer for children to grab plants; objects that were pretended to look like plants also caused a slow response time.

For parents attempting to spoon some peas into the mouth of their child, this finding should come as welcome relief.

I went to Grand Canyon (大峡谷) National Park in July 2012 for the firsttime and I knew I wanted to work there as a park ranger(管理员). Park rangers protect the park's animals, plants, land, buildings, andpeople.

Now, as a park ranger forGrand Canyon National Park, I share the science, history and beauty of this parkwith thousands of visitors from around the world.

National parks are like outdoormuseums. Park rangers have all kinds of jobs, depending on where they work and whatthey studied during college. I teach school field trips(实地考察), work at visitor centers and helppeople stay safe during their visit.

My favorite part of my jobis showing children their first look at the Grand Canyon during school field trips.Children are often amazed at the canyon's size and colors. Sometimes, they thinkit looks like a painting.

Being a park ranger requiresa lot of energy. I walk several miles and talk with hundreds of people each day.Park rangers must enjoy working with people and speaking in front of groups. Nearly5 million people visit Grand Canyon National Park every year.

Park rangers must also beprepared for any situation. Recently, I broke a traffic jam(堵塞). It was caused by a huge elk(麋鹿)standing in the road. Elks can become dangerous when they get scared,so I asked visitors to stop their cars and take pictures from far away. Believeit or not, I also help protect people from monkeys. It is not allowed to feed animalsin national parks. But sometimes, visitors try to feed monkeys.
