The elephant was lying and fast asleep on its side. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it ran after the dogs into the village where they ran for safety. That didn't stop the elephant. It destroyed a few houses and hurt several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess.

Parbati Barua's father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer(驯兽师). He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up —— how to catch wild elephants.

Parbati hasn't always lived in the jungle (丛林). After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to a boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old life. "Life in the city is too boring. Catching elephants is an adventure (冒险) and the excitement can last for days after the chase," she says.

But Parbati doesn't catch elephants just for fun. "My work," she says,"is to rescue men from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from men." And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Nowadays, the Indian elephant becomes angry: for many years, illegal(非法的) hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, people call Parbati to guide the animals back to the forest.

My son Daniel began surfing at the age of 13. Daniel's love for the ride was tested one 1 afternoon.

"Your son's been in an accident, " the lifeguard(救生员) reported to my 2 Mike over the phone hurriedly. "3 he came up to the top of the water, the point of the board was headed towards his eye. "

Mike rushed our son to the hospital. Daniel 4 26 stitches(缝线) from the corner of his eye to the bridge of his nose.

I was 5 home from a meeting while Daniel's eye was being stitched. Mike drove 6 to the airport after they left the doctor's office. He greeted 7 at the gate while Daniel was waiting in the car.

"Daniel?" I questioned. I remember thinking the waves(波浪) must have been terrible that day.

I ran to the car. I sobbed(抽噎) in his arms, telling him how 8 I felt about not being there when the lifeguard called.

"It's okay, Mum, " he said. "I'll be fine. The doctor said I can go back in the water 9 eight days. "

Was he 10 ? I wanted to tell him that he wasn't allowed to go near water again until he was 35, but 11 I controlled myself.

He kept asking me to let him go back on the 12 for the next seven days. One day after I 13 " No" to him for the 100th time, he beat me at my own game.

"Mum, you taught us never to 14 what we love. "

I gave in. Back then, Daniel was just a boy with deep 15 for surfing. Now he is among the top 25 surfers in the world.
