A very new, young officer was at a station. He was on his way to visit his mother in another town, and he wanted to telephone her to tell her the time of this train, so that she could meet him at the station in her car. He look in all his pockets, but he did not have the right money for the telephone, so he went outside and looked around for someone to help him.

    At last an old soldier came by, and the young officer stopped him and said, "Have you got change for ten pence?"

    "Wait a moment." the old soldier answered. He began to put his hand in his pocket, "I'll see whether I can help you."

   "Don't you know how to speak to an officer?" the young man said angrily. "Now let's start again. Have you got change for ten pence?"

  "No, sir," the old soldier answered quickly.

There was an old mule(骡子). One day accidentally he fell into the farmer's well. The farmer thought for a while and said to himself that neither the well nor the old mule was important to him. So he decided to use soil to bury the old mule in the well.

    Then the farmer called his neighbours and they started to put the soil into the well together. The old mule was quite afraid in the beginning. But soon one hopeful idea came to his mind - every time when a shovel(铁铲) of soil landed on his back, he would shake it off and step up!

He said these words to himself again and again, "Shake it off and step up." This way he could fight against the panic (恐慌) and encourage himself. After some time, the mule had stepped over the well's wall. Although terribly tired, he was the winner and he saved his own life. He decided to face his difficulty bravely and not to give up, and finally he won.

    Jack is 20 years old. He is short with a round face and small eyes. He has a job now. He works in a small restaurant.

    Jack has to get up at 5：00 a. m. and rides his bike to work. He usually works from 6：00 a. m. to 7：00 p. m. every day. People eating in the restaurant are very poor. They usually give him a little money for tips(小费). Sometimes they don't give him any tips. So he doesn't like the job and he wants to go to school. He wants to be a mechanic(机械工) because he likes to fix(修理) things. He wants to fix cars. He dreams of running(经营) a car shop, and then he is going to make much money. After he makes a lot of money, he can buy a big house and have a family. Now life is bad, but he is doing his best to make it good.

    Sammy looked out of the classroom window at a bird in a tree. He saw a worm (小虫) in the bird's mouth. "Wow!" he whispered as he looked at the bird eating the worm.

    "Sammy!" his teacher Mr. Maxwell said loudly.

    Sammy jumped and knocked his science book off his desk. Everyone in the class laughed and Sammy blushed. This was the third time today he had been caught not paying attention to the science lesson. It was just so easy to get distracted (分心的) when people read aloud from the science textbook!

    It wasn't that Sammy didn't like science. He loved to learn about machines, Earth and animals. He even thought bugs and plants were great. He wanted to go outside and see how a snake lived. He wanted to watch plants growing from the ground as they did last month. He just didn't want to read about these things.

    Sammy thought Mr. Maxwell would surely understand. "There was a bird with a worm in its mouth..." Sammy began. Then he saw the furious look on his teacher's face. Sammy decided that he had better stop talking before Mr. Maxwell became any angrier.
