It's every parent's worst nightmare: there's a fire in the house the alarms are beeping, but the children are sleeping on. Now scientists have found a better way to rouse slumbering youngsters. Researchers in the US have discovered that playing a child a recording of his mother's voice is about three times more likely to wake him up than a traditional alarm.

Writing in the Journal of Pediatrics, Smith and colleagues report how they compared the effects of four different smoke alarms on 176 children aged between 5 and 12 years old, none of whom had hearing difficulties or were taking any medication that affected their sleep. While one alarm featured a high pitched beeps he sort of commonly found in households the other three featured the voice of the child's mother calling either the child's name, giving instructions such as: "Wake up! Leave the room or both. Each child slept in a lab-based room that resembled a real bedroom.

The results show that vocal alarms appear to be more effective than high-pitched beeps. About 90% of children woke for a voice alarm compared with just over 53% for the traditional alarm

"High pitched beeping alarms don't wake up children well at all under about 12 years of age." Said Dr Gary Smith, a co-author of the research from the Nationwide Children's hospital in Ohio, although he said at present it is not known why He said it was important to look at developing better alarms

Prof Niamh Nic Daeid, director of the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee, said the research found a human voice combined with a low frequency pulsing tone was far more effective in waking up children than a traditional high-pitched alarm. She also noted that more work was needed to explore whether other familiar sounds, such as a dog barking, might also prove effective in rousing children.

(1)、What does the underlined word "slumbering" mean in Paragraph 1?
A、resting B、sleeping C、lying D、waking
(2)、Which of the following statements about the research is NOTTRUE?
A、In the research, no kids had taken medicine with sleeping effect. B、176 children were required to hear 4 different kinds of alarms. C、During the research, high pitched beeping alarm was used. D、Each kid slept in a real bedroom.
(3)、Why is it difficult to wake up kids under about 12 years of age with high pitched beeping alarm?
A、Because high pitched beeping alarms are not so effective as voice alarms. B、Because high pitched beeping alarms are three times more likely to rouse kids. C、Because voice alarm is a better developed alarm. D、It is unknown so far.
(4)、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A、A human voice with a low-frequency pulsing tone was more effective. B、The sound of dog-barking is more effective in rousing children C、Other familiar sounds might be found effective in waking up kids. D、Traditional smoke alarm is no use at all
(5)、Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?
A、Mother's voice more effective in fire alarms B、Say "NO" to high pitched beeping alarms C、Sleeping in high pitched beeping alarms D、How to develop a better alarm
举一反三
For hundreds Of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people's emotions (情感). How you feel is controlled by many things. Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don't know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.
People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special “sunrooms” with artificial (人造的) lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two!
The weather can also affect people's emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.

Did you know that humans aren't the only species (物种) that use language? Bees communicate by dancing. Whales talk to each other by singing. And some apes talk to humans by using American Sign Language.

A female gorilla(大猩猩), Koko, was born at the San Francisco Zoo on July 4th, 1971. Koko learned sign language from her trainer, Dr. Penny Patterson. Patterson began teaching sign language to Koko in 1972, when Koko was one year old. Koko must have been a good student, because two years later she moved onto the Stanford University campus with Dr. Patterson. Koko continued to learn on the campus until 1976. That's when she began living full﹣time with Patterson's group, the Gorilla Foundation. Patterson and Koko's relationship has been very close ever since.

Dr. Patterson says that Koko has mastered sign language and known over 1,000 words, and that Koko makes up new words. For example, Koko didn't know the sign for ring, so she signed the words finger and bracelet(手镯). Dr. Patterson thinks that this shows meaningful and constructive use of language.

Not everyone agrees with Dr. Patterson. Some argue that apes(类人猿) like Koko do not understand the meaning of what they are doing. Some people who don't believe that say that these apes are just performing complex tricks (戏法). For example, if Koko points to an apple and signs red or apple, Dr. Patterson will give her an apple. They argue that Koko does not really know what the sign apple means. She only knows that that if she makes the right movement, one which Dr. Patterson has shown her, then she gets an apple. The argument is not solved, but one thing is for certain: Koko is an extraordinary ape.

It seems like Patterson and Koko have a good relationship, but not everyone agrees with it. Some people believe that Patterson is humanizing the ape. They think that apes should be left in the most natural state possible. Even Dr. Patterson struggles with these feelings. When she was asked if her findings could be duplicated by another group of scientists, she said, "We don't think that it would be ethical (道德的) to do again. " She went on to argue that animals should not be kept in such unnatural environment.

As for the future, Dr. Patterson and the Gorilla Foundation would love to get Koko to an ape preserve (保护区) in Maui, but they are having trouble getting the land. So unless you have a few million dollars to give, Koko's going to be spending her time in Woodland, California with Dr. Patterson. Koko probably doesn't mind that. If she moved to Hawaii, she'd have to give up her Facebook page and Twitter feed, and she's got like 50 thousand "likes". Some may deny (否认) that she knows sign language, but nobody says that she doesn't know social networking.

The Tiaohua Festival is a main festival of the Miao people in Anshun City in Guizhou Province. Each year,the Tiaohua Festival attracts international tourists from all over the world. In 2008,it was included into the second batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List(第二批国家级非物质文化遗产名录). It is usually celebrated in the first lunar month every year.

To decide the exact date of the festival,organizers have to think about many things,like lucky animal days(e. g. the tiger and dragon days are powerful,but the snake and pig days need to be avoided at all costs) and lucky numbers(e. g. "8" means rich but "4" means death). Organizers also need to make sure the date doesn't fall on the festival days of other communities. In this way,people from nearby villages can take part in the festival.

Singing and dancing are the main activities of the Tiaohua Festival. During the festival,the Miao people wear their traditional clothes and silver accessories(配饰). The most important part of the festival is the chance for young people to meet possible marriage partners—men play a musical instrument and women dance to the music in the flower area. If a man plays well,listeners will cheer for him and he can win a woman's admiration. Then they may get married if everything goes well. Other activities include competitions of climbing a flowerdecorated pole and the martial art.
