牛津上海(本地版)五四制初中英语九年级下册Module 2 Unit 5 A story by Mark Twain单元测试卷(含听力材料)

Answer the questions.

When the Titanic was built, she was the largest ship in the world. It had taken 50,000 men two years to build her. She was 269 metres long and as high as an eleven storey building. She was huge! In fact, the word "titanic" is often used to describe something which is "very powerful, strong, important or large".

It was built because of increased tourists travel between North America and Europe. The Titanic was like a floating palace. Everything about her was beautiful and comfortable. She was also impossible to sink or that's what everyone thought.

The Titanic left Southampton on the south coast of England for New York on 10 April, 1912. She stopped first in France and then in Ireland before setting off across the Atlantic Ocean. There were 1,632 passengers on board; 907 crew members(船员) looked after them.

Four days after leaving Southampton, the Titanic's captain received not one but four icebergs(冰山) warnings.

Icebergs are very dangerous for ships- only 10% of an iceberg can be seen above the water. But the water was clear and the captain decided to continue without reducing the ship's speed. At 11:40 p.m. the ship hit an iceberg, which cut a hole about 100 metres long underwater. The passengers were not told, but the Titanic could not survive this terrible damage.

It was dark and freezing cold. The ship was filled with water. There was no time to waste. Women and children were told to climb into the ship's lifeboats. But there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers. Finally, at 2:20 a.m. the Titanic sank to the bottom of the sea. 916 passengers and 673 crew members died in the icy water.

(1)、What does the word "titanic" mean today?
(2)、Where was the Titanic sailing to?
(3)、How many passengers were there on board?
(4)、Why were icebergs so dangerous for ships?
(5)、There were enough lifeboats for all the passengers, weren't there?
(6)、Was it right to let women and children take the lifeboats first? Why?

Do you know what school life is like in Singapore? In Singapore, a class only lasts half an hour, but there are no breaks between classes. The students only have a 30-minute tea break after 3 or 4 classes.
They do not do eye exercises. Yao Suyu said our eye exercises were unfamiliar(不熟悉)to her. “I'd like to introduce them to our school,” she said. “They're very useful!”
In Singapore school ends at 1:50 p.m. But students joined other classes after school such as dance clubs and choir(合唱团). Yao says she joins dance club twice a week and it lasts from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Singapore's population(人口)includes Chinese, Indians(印度人), Malays(马来人 )and Westerners. But there is no special school for any one of the groups. The students in Yao's school are mainly Chinese, Indians and Malays. “The Indian students take Indian language classes when we study Chinese,” said Yao. “But if an Indian student is interested in Chinese, he or she can study it, too.”
In Singaporean schools, teachers teach in English. It's the official(官方的)language in Singapore. Singaporean students have to take different courses after school. Like most Singaporean students, Yao took other courses in Chinese, math and English.

请阅读以下关于幸福心态的文章,根据所提供的信息,完成下面表格,请将答案写在答题卷相应题目的答题位置上。
Happiness is for everyone. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money.
When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you can't always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转) door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
