My Family Is Very Poor
    A little boy comes to a new city. His name is Peter. Of course（当然）, he lives with his mother and father. His family is very rich（富裕的）. They have a driver（司机） and a lot of servants（仆人）.
    Peter is going to a new school. On the first day his parents say to him, "peter, be modest（谦虚的）at your new school. Don't say we are rich. "And Peter says, "Yes, Dad, mom. ”
    So Peter goes to school. He sees his new teacher. And he sits down with the other children. The teacher says. “Good morning，children. The first exercise today is a composition（作文）. The topic（题目） of the composition is "My Family".So every child writes a composition. This is Peter's composition:
  “My name is Peter. My family is very poor（贫穷）. Both my father and my mother are very poor. Our driver is very poor and all the servants are poor…”

    Jill Jones got a new job in a different part of the city. She had to go to work every day by train.

    There was only one other person on the train with her. He was a well-dressed man reading a newspaper. Suddenly, about halfway through the journey, the man began tearing（撕） his newspaper into hundreds of small pieces. Then he picked them up, opened the window and threw them all out. Then he sat down, closed his eyes, and slept for the rest of the journey again.

    The next day, Jill got on the same train. The same well-dressed man was there, reading a newspaper. As before, about halfway through the journey, the man began tearing his newspaper into hundreds of small pieces. Then he picked the pieces up, opened the window and threw them all out. This done, he sat down, closed his eyes, and slept for the rest of the journey. This happened every day for a week.

    At last, on Friday, Jill spoke to the man. "Excuse me, sir," she said, "I don't want to be rude, but I must ask you a question. When we are halfway through our journey, you tear your newspaper into hundreds of pieces and then throw them all out of the window. Please tell me, sir. Why do you do this?"

    The well-dressed man smiled. "There is a simple reason," he said. "I like to sleep for part of the journey, but I cannot sleep if the train is full of elephants. So I throw the pieces of paper out to the elephants. It stops them from coming into the train."

    "But there aren't any elephants on the train," Jill said. "I know," the man said. "It works well, doesn't it?

    Imagine this. Somebody hides free books in the subway for you to find and read. Sound exciting? Well, British actress Emma Watson, 26, is doing it! She is known for acting as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies.

    Watson hid 100 copies of a book called Mom & Me & Mom (2013) in London's subway. The book is an autobiography（自传）from US writer Maya Angelou. It tells about the writer's relationship with her mother. These books were put in different places in the subway. People saw Watson doing the same thing in the New York Subway this month.

    With each book, there is a handwritten note by Watson. She asked people to "take special care" of the books if they find them. She also wrote that "when you are finished, please leave it on the subway again for someone else to find".

    Watson's work is part of a movement called Books on the Underground. It calls on people to leave their books on the subway so other people can enjoy them too.

    Hollie Belton, a woman in London, started the movement in 2012. She loves reading on the subway. She noticed that a lot of people shared her habit, so she got the idea. Over the years, Belton has left over 2,000 books of her own. The movement has attracted more and more people.

    Watson is a book lover as well. That's why she tried it. Earlier this year, Watson set up her own online book club Our Shared Shelf. She reads a book every month with others. Mom & Me & Mom is the club's book for November.

    Norman Bethune was a famous Canadian doctor. In 1938, he came to China. Here is a story about him in China. It was October 20, 1939. Dr Bethune was busy working in a hospital. A man came and told Dr Bethune that he needed a lot of doctors. Immediately, Dr Bethune started out with some doctors. Dr Bethune took the wounded(受伤的) men into a small place and began to work. He went on working all the night. He had no time to think about taking a rest. The next day, a young man ran in and said to the doctors, "A few hundred enemy soldiers (敌兵）are coming." But Dr Bethune still went on with his work. Twenty minutes later, when Bethune was working on the leg of the last soldier, the guns (枪）sounded closer. Again the young man rushed in and told Dr Bethune not to work anymore. Dr Bethune, you must go now !" he cried. "Please go, Dr Bethune," said the wounded soldier himself. "Never mind, my boy. It won't take long," said Dr Bethune. "If I spend a few more minutes on it now, I. can save your leg. But if I don't, you'll lose it." The guns sounded even closer now, but Dr Bethune worked on. After he finished his work, he and other doctors left. As Bethune and the other doctors were climbing the hills, they could see the enemies going into the village.

    When he was small, Hill was a famous bad boy.

    At the age of 9, his father married his stepmother. At that time they lived poorly in the countryside while his stepmother was from a wealthy family.

    His father introduced Hill to his stepmother as he said, "Dear, I hope you notice in the entire shire this is the worst boy, who has made me have no other way. Maybe before tomorrow morning he will throw a stone at you, or do a bad thing you will never imagine."

    To Hill's surprise, his stepmother went up to him with a smile, held up his head and looked at him carefully. She then turned around to tell her husband, "You're wrong. He is not the worst boy in the entire shire, but the cleverest and most creative boy. Only he doesn't find a place to show himself."

    When Hill was 14 years old, his stepmother bought him a used typewriter and said to him, "I believe you will become a writer." He understood his stepmother's strong feeling of interest in his family while he saw with his own eyes she had changed his family. Therefore, he would do as well as she expected him to.

    The strength from his stepmother made him a rich man and famous writer in the United States and one of the most important persons in the 20th century.

    Praise will never be unnecessary, especially for children. Sincere (真诚的) praise may be better than 10,000 bad words.

    A train stopped at a small station. A man looked out of the window and saw a woman who was selling cakes. People from the train were buying them. The man wanted to buy a cake, but the woman was standing far from the window. It was raining, and the man didn't want to go out in the rain. Suddenly he saw a boy who was walking on the platform(站台) not far from him.

    "Come here, boy!" the man said. "Do you know how much those cakes cost?" "Five cents for each," the boy answered. The man gave the boy ten cents and asked him to buy two cakes. "One for me, and one for you," he told the boy. A few minutes later, the boy came back. He was eating a cake. He gave the man five cents and said, "There was only one cake."
