任务型阅读

In today's world of mobile phones, MP5 players and minicomputers, most people have at least one timetelling tool with them. Since these small machines are so common, will people stop wearing the 500yearold watches? According to some people, yes. A teenager says it's unnecessary to wear a watch. Many young people agree and they use their mobile phones to tell time. Louis Galie, a president, says that fewer young people wear watches today than five years ago.

However, watchmakers say that watches get popular again when people reach their 20s and 30s. By then, they want to spend money on a nice timetelling tool which doesn't just keep good time. For this reason, the watch industry has become an accessory business (配件业)in recent years.

Today's ________ offer a lot of uses that meet the need of almost any personality (个性). They can be used as compasses (指南针),calendars, and even USB drives...

People are always trying their best to create new kinds of watches. A certain watchmaker business makes watches that don't even look like watches. Their popular model uses different color lights to tell the time. Another watchmaker business, makes a "handless" watch, using a ring of circles to keep time. This watch makes people talk a lot about modern watches.

Whether a watch expresses fashion sense, creative ability or a love of sports, people want their timetelling tools to be beautiful, fashionable and practical. All in all, a watch has become more important than the time it tells.

Answer the questions.

There has been a lot of talk about Chinese bicycle sharing recently. Shared bikes are nowadays becoming the centre of attention in our We Chat friend circle. Many of our friends post photos of themselves riding bikes, especially during the weekend in natural parks, and we can see people logging in and out of shared bike apps. But are people really drawn to(被....所吸引) the idea of exercise and green transportation all of a sudden?

Some people have tried Mobikes lately, and they don't particularly like Mobikes. They think the first generation Mobikes, the ones without baskets, are designed for athletes. They are very hard to ride, and the seat is not adjustable(可调节的). Then, they tried the yellow ofo bikes. They are easier to ride than Mobikes, but they don't usually have baskets, and you need to enter the password by hand, instead of scanning a QR code and having the lock open automatically like with Mobikes.

We appreciate that there are shared bikes on the roads. They have saved us a lot of time during emergency situations. And on beautiful, clear days, we do enjoy riding them outside the city. But from what we've seen in our friend circles, people have been giving them endless praises, while we still saw some obvious flaws (缺陷).

In our experience, there has never been a unanimous(一致的) decision on anything in public opinion. It makes us wonder whether these people really like riding shared bikes or are just saying this to agree with others. When we asked them individually, a friend of us, Lisa, secretly told us she tried the bikes to fit in(融入朋友圈). She doesn't like bikes and finds city's roads too harsh for bike riding. But the only way to hang out with her friends was riding out of town together. To join in social activities, she had to pick up bike riding again. Another young man, Simon admitted that he started talking about and forwarding information(转发信息) on shared bikes to appear cool and fashionable to friends. He started paying attention when Mobikes firs launched(推出). These views will give us something new to think about when we ride these bikes again.

The villas(别墅)were very nice. Beautiful houses, wonderful lawns, and nice gardens. This was the kind of housing estate where John Wood preferred to work.

It was just before eleven o'clock at night. After John drove around for the fifth time, he thought that he had found the right house-No. 4. There was no light and the garage(车库)door was open. John parked his car in the next street and then came into the garage.

No one would think that a well-dressed gentleman with a white silk scarf and gloves, was really an excellent thief.

After looking around the house for a while, John got down to work. He searched every room, and before long, his hands were full. He had two necklaces, some gold rings and a purse with a lot of money. He put all the things in his pocket.

Then he found a small wall safe(保险箱)in the bedroom. John couldn't wait to take the valuable things from the safe and put them into his own pocket! But the thief met a problem; he couldn't open the safe.

John wiped a few drops of sweat from his forehead, took off his gloves, and placed them on a chair. Again and again, and finally, he opened the safe. He saw something shining-a huge diamond.

Suddenly, John heard someone opening the front door. It was the owner of the house. John put the diamond in his pocket, ran to the window, climbed out of the house and drove away in the dark.

Ten minutes later, the police arrived. After searching the house. the police found an important piece of evidence(证据)that could easily tell who was the thief.

Do you know what the piece of evidence was?
