Confucius（孔子）was one of the most important people in human history.He taught people to be polite and love each other.His ideas changed people's life.

Early Life

Confucius was born around 551 B.C.in China.That was over 2，500 years ago.Some say that Confucius was born into a rich family.Others say he was born poor.One thing is clear：Confucius lived during a time of great trouble.

Philosophy（哲学）and Teachings

Different groups in China were fighting.People forgot about good manners（礼仪）.This made Confucius sad.He wanted people to be kind and polite to each other.He believed in the idea of"ren".That means "loving others"."People should follow the Golden Rule，"he said.The Golden Rule is"to treat others as you would like to be treated".He believed that a good leader should treat his followers with care.This would help the leader set a good example.Confucius thought leaders could make people follow the law（法律）

Confucius promoted（提倡）music education.He thought music had a strong influence on people and believed that music could make the things on the earth get on well with each other.

So music made it possible for our society to develop well.

Death

Confucius died at the age of 71 or 72.After his death，he was honored as a man of wisdom.His ideas helped shape the Chinese government.Today he is known as one of the most important teachers in Chinese history.

Yuju Opera, also called Henan Bangzi, is one of the most popular local operas all over the country.

Its earliest written record can be dated back more than 200 years. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the opera became widely spread across Henan Province. After 1949, it experienced rapid growth. At first, small performances were held in tea houses in the city of Kaifeng. Then it spread not only in the villages and cities of Henan Province but also all over the country. It became the third most popular style of Chinese opera in the country, just behind Peking Opera and Yue Opera.

Yuju Opera is well received by people because it is full of local flavor (风味) of life. At the beginning, it was loved by its simple folk stories and powerful arias (唱腔), without the use of make-up, costumes, or even instruments. As the art spread to other cities, new styles began to develop. Nowadays Yuju Opera is generally divided into four different styles: Xiangfu, Yudong, Yuxi, and Shahe.

There are over 600 pieces of Yuju Opera. The most popular of which are The Command MuGuiying and HuaMulan. While The Command MuGuiying is a folk tale that is not well-known outside of China, the story of Hua Mulan became the classic Disney film Mulan. It tells the tale of a young woman. She defies tradition and takes her elderly father's place in the army by dressing herself as a man. After 12 years of war, she is honored for her service and is able to return home. Mulan was the brave warrior (战士)!

With the popularity of Liyuan Spring and other programs, Yuju Opera also shows its new power and catches more young people's eyes.

I'm an animal lover. When I was a kid, my family took care of an Alsatian 1 called Paddy. He belonged to a family 2 lived nearby. They were nice people but they didn't know how to 3 a big dog. They asked us to help them because we had 4 kept dogs and were known as" the dog family". Every day we'd go to see Paddy, who lived in the family's cold garage (车库). We'd feed him, stay with him and take him out for long 5 sometimes. 

We'd spend hours 6 Paddy. We even took him to camp with us, 7 he used to pull me along on a toy tractor(拖拉机). Paddy had the kindest 8 I'd ever seen in a dog. He 9 his kindness and protective nature in his behavior. 

One day I was on a swing(秋千) going higher and higher. Paddy stopped 10 . Other people might think Paddy was bad. But we knew he was 11 his little boy going too high on a swing. He was 12 me. 

His eyes seemed to get kinder and kinder. Sometimes when he looked at us, I thought he was thanking us for what we did for him to make his life 13 . He made our lives better, too. 

As 14 went by, Paddy and I grew together till life's sad cycle(周期) finally took Paddy away from us. But I'll always remember Paddy, my 15 friend and protector. 

A few good friends are talking about their last vacations. 

Christopher's mother now is sitting proudly and watching TV as Christopher is given the "Child of Courage" prize by his favorite TV star. This makes her remember the accident happened to them. 

Christopher was sitting in the car with his mother, father, sister Rosie, 10, and brother Mac, 7, when his father drove onto a metal barrier(障碍物). Unluckily, the car fell down from a hill into a deep river. Christopher, then 12, swam through a broken window and got out for the fresh air. Then he realized his brother and sister were still in the car. 

Christopher took a deep breath and swam back into the car. He saved Mac first, then he swam back to look for Rosie, who was under the cold, dark water, in the car. Christopher had to feel for her seatbelt because he couldn't see anything in the water. He took the seatbelt off her, and went up for air. Finally he went back to pull her out of the car. 

Christopher's mother and father were thrown out before the car rolled down the hill. When his mother came back to her life, she looked for her children hurriedly. She could see Mac on the bank, but she couldn't find the other ones. She was so worried. Then she saw Christopher come up out of the water like a dolphin with Rosie on his shoulder. She shouted excitedly to Christopher down to the river, "I'm so proud of you. "

The family called for an ambulance (救护车). It took Christopher's father who was badly hurt to a nearby hospital immediately. 

When Emily Cummins was a teenager, her grandfather had an illness — a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste(牙膏) out of the tube(管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器). 

A few years later, Emily learnt that some African countries are short of water. The women and children there often walk many kilometres a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets(桶) on their heads. They have to walk carefully so as not to waste the water. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets of water each time. 

Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it. 

Emily has already won several prizes for her inventions and was named one of the world's top ten young people. And Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place.
