That's why dogs make such a hit. They are so glad to see us that they almost jump out of their skins. .
A baby's smile has the same effect. Have you ever been in a doctor's, waiting room and looked around at all the sad faces waiting impatiently to be seen? There were six or seven patients waiting when a young woman came in with a nine-month-old baby. She sat down next to a gentleman who was more than a little impatient about the long wait for service. The baby just looked up at him with that great big smile that is so characteristic of babies,. Soon he struck up a conversation with the woman about her baby and his grand-children and then the entire reception room joined in, and the boredom and tension were changed into a pleasant and enjoyable experience . Telephone companies throughout the US have a program called "phone power" which is offered to employees who use the telephone for selling their services or products. In this program they suggest that you smile when talking on the phone. Your "smile" comes through in your voice.
You don't feel like smiling? . If you are alone, force yourself to whistle or hum a tune or sing. Act as if you were already happy, and that will tend to make you happy.
Your smile is a messenger of your goodwill..To someone who has seen a dozen people frown or turn their faces away, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds Especially when someone is under pressure from his bosses, his customers, his teachers or parents or children, a smile can help him realize that all is not hopeless that there is joy in the world.

These days when someone says a computer has a bug (小虫子) in it, usually they mean that there's a problem with one of its programs. Maybe your computer crashed when you were in the middle of a game.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}
But back in the early days of computers, a woman named Grace Hopper was part of a team that discovered the very first computer bug.
{#blank#}2{#/blank#} She had been invited to help program a new computer, the job of which was to quickly deal with the math problems ships used to find their way.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Then it translated the patterns of holes into the math problems it was supposed to solve.
One afternoon in 1947 Hopper and her team were running a program. But the computer wasn't giving them the right results.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} They finally ended up taking the computer apart, looking for problems. What did they find? It was a moth (飞蛾)! The moth was blocking some of the holes in the paper—{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Some people think Hopper was the first person to use the word “debug” to mean “get rid of the problems in a computer”.
A. What could be wrong? B. Hopper was a mathematician. C. Who had operated the computer? D. Hopper was a hardworking scientist. E. She thought it was funny that it was a real one. F. Or you got an error message when you tried to go to a website. G. The computer worked by reading instructions from a long piece of paper with holes in it. |
A. Sometimes you may need advice on breaking bad habits from other people. B. First, you may ask yourself how you feel about a habit. C. You may come up with a plan to break your bad habits. D. Meanwhile, keep a diary of the bad habits you desire to change. E. Sometimes the truth hurts. F. Otherwise there is an empty space in your life where the bad habit could go back. G. There are times when it can be difficult to identify your bad habits. |
While it is important to maintain good habits, it is equally important to learn how to break bad habits if you want to achieve success in life. Here are some tips to get you started.
The first step in breaking bad habits is to identify them. Only after identifying them can you decide to do something about them. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} For example, you may ask yourself: Is the habit holding me back from achieving my goal? Does the habit make me feel good or bad?
{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Then you may listen to the things that people say about you. Are people saying the same negative things about you? It's easy to become defensive when someone says something about us we don't like, and let's face it. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}
Once you have identified your bad habits, it's time to break them. First, you should introduce something new and meaningful in your life to replace the bad habit. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} If you hung around at the bars after work, replace it by going to the gym instead. Or if you sat and watched TV for hours, you may work on a task that needs to be done.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Write down the efforts you make to change them, and also the results of your actions. And write down how you feel when you successfully change one of your bad habits. If you can read and reflect on how you feel about the progress you've made, it may motivate you to continue to work on changing other things.
