How to Grow Organic Tomatoes in a Container
Anyone who has seen tomatoes growing in a garden knows that they tend to be huge plants. So the first thing to do when considering growing tomatoes in a pot is to find a suitable variety.
After you find the perfect plant, it is time to plant it. In general, plastic or fiberglass pots are best for growing tomatoes. They don't dry out quickly. While tomatoes love heat, they don't like being dry. Besides, tomatoes need to grow in a reasonably large pot. A pot must be 8 inches deep. That's the absolute minimum. A 12- or 16-inch pot is even better.
Any good quality organic potting soil works for tomatoes. Don't use soil dug directly from the garden. Compost-based soil, whether purchased or mixed from your special recipe, is nice. When planting the tomato, put some soil in the bottom of the pot and set the plant in. After you have the plant set at the proper level, fill in around it with soil. The soil should go up to about an inch below the rim of the pot to allow room for watering.
The best way to tell when to water is to stick your finger into the soilif the first two inches are dry, it's time to water.
The trickiest thing about growing tomatoes in a pot is that they are heavy feeders. Every time you water, you wash nutrients out of the soil. So fertilize (施肥) regularly. Once a month is good. But every other week, applying the fertilizer at half-strength is better.
A. It is too heavy for container gardens.
B. That's why clay pots are popular.
C. Instead, use whatever soil you can get.
D. And dry soil can reduce fruit production.
E. This provides constant nutrients for the tomato plants.
F. They require people's much work to stay manageable.
G. Tomatoes don't like being dry, so water them regularly.
If you'd love to be more eco-friendly but don't know where to begin, start with a few small changes. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
Adjust your thermostat(恒温器)to save on heating and cooling costs. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}In summer, set your thermostat to 78 ℉when you're at home and raise the temperature when you're away. In winter, turn your thermostat to 68 ℉ and lower it by 5°-10° when you're sleeping or out of your house. To stay warm in winter, put on a sweater or another layer instead of turning up the thermostat.
Turn off lights and unplug power strips that you're not using. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Some devices can still use energy even when they're turned off. So, turn off the power strips at night to completely cut off energy use. If you need to leave your computer or TV on, try setting it to sleep mode.
Make your taps and toilets low-flow. Cut back on water waste by installing flow restrictor(节流装置) inside your taps and installing a low-flow shower head in your bathroom. This can save 3 to 4 gallons of water for every minute. If you're replacing a toilet, look for a low-flow one to save thousands of gallons of water a year. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}
{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Adjust your washing machine to use cold water instead of warm. Since more energy is spent drying the clothes, skip the machine and hang your washed clothes on a clothesline. If you don't have space for a clothesline or can't hang clothes outside, set up a clothes drying rack that you can use inside. Try running your clothes through an extra spin cycle to remove even more water from the clothes. This will make them dry quicker.
A. Replace burned out light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. B. By doing some small things at home, you can easily reduce your carbon footprint. C. Remember to fix leaky taps or toilets as soon as you notice water dripping. D. Choose sustainable options when you purchase things that are normally packaged in plastic. E. This is an easy way to reduce energy use. F. Use less energy during summer months and winter by controlling your heating and cooling bills. G. Wash your clothes with cold water and line dry them. |
A. Turn the laptop over B. Let the laptop face you C. but there's a good chance of saving your investment if you act quickly D. Do not keep it in direct sunlight or on a radiator. E. Pressing and holding the power button for five seconds is quickest F. but you can replace your laptop keyboard G. You can use a hair dryer on its coolest setting |
How to Save Your Laptop after a Spill
Spilling coffee, juice or water on a laptop might seem like the end of the world, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Here's a five-step plan to rescue a laptop after a liquid spill.
Switch the laptop off
Shut down the laptop. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Remove the power cord, unplug any peripherals and remove the battery. The biggest danger at this time is the device shorting out.
Remove excess liquid from the laptop
Remove excess liquid with a soft cloth or paper towels. Do not use a wiping motion as that just spreads the liquid further.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}
With the laptop facing away from you, move it from side to side and from front to back in a gentle rocking motion to help the liquid to escape from all four sides.
Use compressed air to dry the laptop
Make sure that you have removed all excess liquid. Then, if you have one, use a can of compressed air to help dry the laptop. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Keep the dryer moving all the time and hold it at least 20cm above the laptop.
Leave laptop to completely dry out
Leave the laptop opened in an inverted "V" shape in a warm area, to completely dry out. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Wait for 24 hours or longer, making sure the keyboard is completely dry, before reinstalling the battery and peripherals.
If you must replace your laptop keyboard, please remember: most laptop keyboards can be replaced by a technician, or you can purchase a new USB or wireless keyboard to use with the laptop.
