There is a wonderful story about Jimmy Durante, one of great singers. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (ask) to be part of a show for some old World War II soldiers, he told them he was very busy and he could afford only a few minutes, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he would come if they wouldn't mind his singing one short song and immediately leaving for his next appointment. Of course, the show's director agreed43．{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (happy).

    But when Jimmy got on stage, something surprising happened. He went through {#blank#}4{#/blank#} short song and then stayed. The applause grew louder and louder and he kept {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (stay). Pretty soon, he had been on stage {#blank#}6{#/blank#} fifteen, twenty, and then thirty minutes. One of his {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (assist) behind the stage stopped him and said, “I thought you had to go after a few minutes. What happened”

    Jimmy answered, “I did have to go, but I can show you the reason why I stayed. You can see for {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (you) if you look at the front row.” In the front row were two men, both of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} had lost an arm in the war. One had lost his right arm and the other had lost his left. Together, they were able to clap, and that was exactly what they{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (do) , loudly and cheerfully.

By the time Jill got to a little town, every hotel room {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（take）. “You've got to give me a room somewhere,” he said to the manager at the hotel, “{#blank#}2{#/blank#}just a bed — I don't care where.”

    “How did you sleep” asked the manager.

    “Never better.”

    The manager was impressed. “No problem with the other guy snoring, then?”

    “No, I shut him up{#blank#}8{#/blank#}no time,” said Jill.

    “How did you manage that?” asked the manager. “Did you give him some medicine to stop the snoring?”

    “No, I didn't. But here is {#blank#}9{#/blank#}I did. He was already in bed when I went into the room,” Jill explained. “I went over, gave him a kiss on the forehead, and said, ‘Good night, beautiful,' and he sat up all night {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(watch) me.”

    The Internet is the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(big) source of information in the world, which consists of millions of{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(page) of data. It dated back to 1969 when a US defense organization developed a way for all{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (they) computers to “talk” to each other through the telephone. Thus DARPANET, a network of computers {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (come) into being. But it was only used by the US army. Then in 1984, the NSF started the NSFNET network{#blank#}5{#/blank#} became known as the Inter-Network.     Years of expectation this time has finally arrived, there were times when I thought we would never get here. I just graduated last week. The dream {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (plant) many years ago. I had always dreamed {#blank#}2{#/blank#} going back to school, but it was too {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (frighten) and too hard.

    Musical knowledge was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} matter of higher learning. It is said that he thought of the six most important {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (subject) to study, ranking music higher than the other five necessary subjects like writing and mathematics.

    Music was so important because the ideal society was to be governed by ritual (礼制) functions, but not by law. In a culture {#blank#}8{#/blank#} people function according to ritual, music is used to help govern them. So music wasn't really {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (entertain), but a means for musicians to accomplish political and social goals. Music is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (eventual) a means for social happiness.

    More and more public schools in America make it a rule that students must finish a certain amount of community service {#blank#}1{#/blank#} they are allowed to graduate from high school. They work on projects like making the environment better or {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (feed) homeless people.

    Many school systems in the United States now ask students {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (do) some kinds of community service as part of their studies. Students involved in service projects help {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (they) as well as their communities. They learn about the needs of people and aid {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (organize).For this reason, holidays {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (become) the prime period for volunteer work so far. Volunteers get no pay, but experts point out that it is {#blank#}7{#/blank#} excellent opportunity to learn and practice new skills.

    According to the statistics, more than 60% of young Americans have participated {#blank#}8{#/blank#} different kinds of community service, such as cooking for homeless people, or painting old buildings, etc. Some students like to do their volunteer work in {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (centre) parts of America, but the majority of teens prefer to do it in their hometowns. Tom, a 16-year-old middle school student in California, often {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (do) community service in a local hospital. He works 16 hours every week either receiving calls at the information desk, or helping push patients back to their wards (病房).
