Wang Yani was born in 1975. Even as a baby she loved to draw. Her father was an 1. Yani wanted to be like him. So she tried to stand like her father as she painted, which made him laugh.

    One day, Yani painted lines on her father's painting. He got 2. At the time, she was only two and a half years old. She cried and said,“I want to 3 like you!” Her father looked at her without saying anything. He 4 remembered his childhood. He also wanted to draw and paint, but his parents didn't understand. On May 28, the National People's Congress (全国人民代表大会) agreed China's first-ever Civil Code. With 1,260 articles, it is a collection of laws that is about personal issues, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}property (物权), marriage, family, personality rights, and inheritances (继承). It's like an encyclopedia (百科全书) for social life.

China does have laws that cover these issues. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} , all kinds of these laws are not unified. The Civil Code gathers them into one unified document and makes improvements. With the Civil Code, China hopes to set up a country under the rule of law with {#blank#}5{#/blank#} protection for civil rights.

One special thing about the code is the part about individual (个人的) rights. It's a major innovation (创新) to form the individual rights into one part alone. This part includes laws{#blank#}6{#/blank#} relate to one's body, health, name, image (肖像), and fame.

Some of the laws in this part deal with how new technology is{#blank#}7{#/blank#}.For example, people who use AI face swap (调换) tools to make videos may go against {#blank#}8{#/blank#} image rights. The laws also provide data protection rights relating to possible data leaks by tech companies.

As we know, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, there were several attempts to draft (起草) a civil code in 1954, 1962, 1979 and 2001. But the conditions {#blank#}9{#/blank#} not good enough. In 2015, China started to work on the present code and{#blank#}10{#/blank#} it after 5 years. This year, the code took effect on Jan. 1.

The Elmore Bank had just put in a new safe and vault (金库). Mr. Adams was very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (pride) of it. He gladly explained its workings to everyone. Ralph Spencer listened {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (polite), but did not seem very interested. The two children, May and Agatha, were very{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (excite) to see these shining things.

Ralph threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt sleeves. With that act Ralph Spencer disappeared and Jimmy Valentine took {#blank#}8{#/blank#} ( he) place. "Get away from the door, all of you," he said. Then he set his suitcase on the floor and laid out all the tools. In ten minutes, breaking his own burglarious (入室盗窃的) record, he opened the door. 

Jimmy put on his coat and walked towards the front door. A big man stood in his way. "Hello, Ben!" said Jimmy, with a strange smile. "Well, let's {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (go)." And then Ben Price acted rather strangely. "Guess you're mistaken, sir," he said. "I don't think we've met each other before. Your carriage {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (wait) for you, isn't it?"

Most of us like to know where we are and where we're going. It can feel strange to be 1 . The words "being lost" make us think of a dark and scary wood or street, 2  that's not always the case. 

Once we were on holiday in Venice. Dad planned to go out to take photos early the next morning. Mum wasn't 3 , but I would go with him. That's only because he 4  I could have the biggest bowl of Italian ice cream if I did. 5  else would I get up so early?
