A. Why has this happened to me? B. Soon the wheels came out of the mud. C. Nobody will help you unless(除非)you help yourself. D. He looked around but couldn't find anyone to help him. E. Then suddenly the wheels(车轮)of the horse cart were deep in the mud. |
John, a farmer, was riding his cart(运货马车)along the country road. He had to arrive at the market early so that he could sell his vegetables. It rained heavily the day before, so it was very difficult for the horse to move on in the mud(泥).
It was more difficult for the horse to move the cart. John climbed down from his seat and stood beside his cart. He felt really sad. But he didn't try to pull the wheels up by himself. Instead, he looked up at the sky and started shouting, "I am unlucky! "
After some time, an old man walked by. "Do you think you can move the cart by simply looking at it and shouting?" he asked. "Did you try to get the wheels out of the mud by yourself? Come on, put your shoulder(肩) to the wheels, and you will soon find the way out."
John did as the old man said. John learned his lesson. He thanked the man and went happily on his way.
Is it difficult for you to get up in the morning? Are you often late for work or school? Yes? Then a scientist called Mike has a special bed for you. His Bed will get you up in the morning! Here is how it works!
The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music and then your girlfriend's beautiful voice comes, “Wake up, darling, please.” A few minutes later, loud music comes from the tape recorder. At the same time, you may hear the voice of your boss. Your boss shouts angrily, “ Wake up at once, or you'll be late!” If you don't get up after that, you'll be sorry! A plastic “foot” is in the bed. It kicks you in the head. Then the bed waits for a few more minutes. What! You're still in bed! Slowly the top of the bed rises higher and the foot of the bed goes lower. Finally, you fall off the bed and onto the floor. You are out of the bed and awake!
Mike made his bed because he wanted to take part in a competition. Mike won one of the top prizes for his bed.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to an-other place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#}They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO, is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. B. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. C. Pollution comes in many ways. D. The more people, the more pollution. E. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. F. Because the Earth is being polluted day and night. G. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. |
A. In Great Britain, there is a saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." B. Work hours are different from one country to another. C. Many people say that their vacations are too short D. They don't have enough time with their families. E. Why do people work so many hours? F. Work comes first. |
Many people say that they are working too many hours.
{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. They can't take care of things at home. They don't have enough time to relax or to stay with their family.
{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2, 159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Some people work extra (额外的) hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don't pay overtime. Their workers don't get more pay for more work. Some people think it's their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't work more hours.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.
