My Plan for the Weekend

The Beets were a new couple (夫妇). The things in their rooms, such as the television, the computer, the fridge, furniture and so on, were all left by their parents. They only paid some money for their food and clothes. But they tried their best to save money. If they had something important to tell their friends, they always visited them instead of calling them.

One day, it was a quarter past nine. Mr. Beet didn't come back. His wife was a little worried. The supper was cold and she had waited for two hours. She was sitting by the table in the dark room.

Suddenly the woman heard someone coming upstairs. It was her husband's step. She hurried to open the door. In the dark she could hear his deep breathing (呼吸). As soon as he sat down, she turned on the light and found he looked very tired.

"Why do you come back so late, dear?" asked the woman. "Haven't you caught a bus?"

"Yes, but I didn't take it."

"Why not?"

"I ran after it so that I saved two dollars this evening."

"That's great!" the woman said happily. "Run after a taxi next time and you'll save both more time and money."

I have a good friend. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (he) name is Mike Brown.Here is a photo {#blank#}2{#/blank#} him. Mike is fat because he likes eating {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(hamburger) and ice-cream. Mike and I are in the same class, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} he is my classmate, too. We always do {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(sport) after school. Mike likes playing soccer. He {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(think) it's interesting. He has a soccer ball, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} I don't have one. I think soccer is too difficult. I like ping-pong. It's easy for {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (I). Sometimes, we play baseball with {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(we) friends. It's fun. We don't play basketball. We only watch basketball games {#blank#}10{#/blank#}TV. It's relaxing.

My name is Bill. I love animals. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}The Dog is black and the cat is white. They both look beautiful. My dog's name is Heihei. He is very smart. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}He likes running around me. I take him to play sports in the park every morning，Mimi is the name of my cat. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}She often sleeps in the day. So she is very fat. She likes playing with balls.

①Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.

②"For the rent（房租）." Mama would count out the big silver pieces.

③"For the groceries." Another group of coins.

④"I'll need a notebook." That would be my brother Nels or me.

⑤Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with great interest. At last, Papa would ask, "Is that all?" And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little, Mama would look up and smile, "Good, we do not have to go to the Bank." We were so proud of Mama's Bank Account（银行账户）. It gave us such a warm, safe feeling.

⑥When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. "It will cost a little money," he said.

⑦We all gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it in front of Mama. This was the "Little Bank", which was used for sudden emergencies（紧急事件）. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. "We do not want to go to the Bank, right?"  she said. We all shook our heads.

⑧"I will work in Dillon's grocery after school," Nels answered.

⑨"I will give up smoking," Dad added.

⑩ "I will look after the children every Friday night," I said.

⑪Mama gave us a bright smile and wrote down a number. "That's quite enough." We all felt good because we didn't have to go down town and draw money out of Mama's Bank Account.

⑫That was twenty years ago.

⑬Last year I sold my first story, I hurried to give the check to Mama. "For you," I said, "to put in your Bank Account."

⑭Mama looked at me, surprisingly. "There is no account," she said. "in all my life, I've never been inside a bank."

⑮And when I didn't- couldn't- answer, Mama said seriously, "It is not good for little ones to be afraid- to not feel safe."
