In its best times on the nineteenth century, thatch (茅草屋顶) played an important role in protecting British homes from the weather. But new technologies since have led to a rapid decline in thatching and many of the thatched cottages that remain have been changed beyond all recognition by developers or have run into disrepair, a rather upsetting reminder of a bygone age.

A Welsh company, however, is trying to breathe new life into some of the last traditional thatched cottages in western Wales by repairing them and letting them out as holiday homes. Called "Under the Thatch", the company is run by Greg Stevenson, who lives in his own thatched cottage in Ceredigion. An architectural historians by training, he repairs old buildings in old-fashioned ways.

All the cottages are in attractive locations around southwest Wales. Unlike most holiday homes, the cottages are let all year round—chiefly because Greg prices them lower than many holiday properties( 房屋) and he'd prefer that properties are rented just above cost price than not used at all. And with that comes a bargain or two: it's common for a property to go for as little as£35 a night. Consequently occupancy for properties with " Under the Thatch" is at 95 percent( the average in Wales is 35 percent).

Its success has meant that Greg has been able to buy up more old cottages and bring them back into the community. Greg has also diversified from offering only thatched cottages: he now lets out a variety of rare accommodations dotted around western styles , including a renovated(修复的) train carriage and two gypsy caravans which were used by Romanies.

Most of his thirty properties are run using environmentally friendly technologies. Including solar panels and recycled furnishings. But most importantly, what the cottages all have in common is that they bring back life to local communities. Spend a weekend "Under the Thatch" rather than in a holiday home, buy local food and visit nearby restaurants, and you will be contributing to the local economy.

Detective Keeling took his client—a goodlooking lady into the back yard of the store together. The lady opened a door in the wall and they entered the small room behind the store. They crossed the room to a locked door.

Mr. Keeling took some special keys from his pocket. Moments later, one of the keys unlocked the door. The lady went into the store. She said she would hide under the table to keep watch on her husband. Mr. Keeling did not follow her.

The detective went quickly to the policeman's house. Then the two men hurried to the jewellery store. They looked through the window. The policeman was surprised. He spoke to Mr. Keeling, “I don't understand. You told me, ‘Robbins took a young woman to a restaurant.' Where is she?”

“There she is!” said Mr. Keeling. He pointed through the window.

“Do you know the lady with Robbins?” asked the policeman.

“That's his secret friend,” said Mr. Keeling.

“No! You're wrong! That's Robbins' wife,” said the policeman. “I've known her for fifteen years.”

“What?” the detective shouted. His face became pale. “Who is under the table in the store?” He started to kick the door of the jewellery store. Mr. Robbins came to the door and opened it. The policeman and the detective ran into the store.

“Look under that table!” shouted the detective. “Be quick!”

The policeman lifted the cloth and put his arm under the table. He pulled out a black dress, a black veil and a woman's wig(假发).

“Is this young lady your wife?” Mr. Keeling asked the jeweller. He pointed at the woman.

“Yes! She is my wife!” said Mr. Robbins angrily. “Why did you kick my door? Why are those clothes under my table?”

“Please check all the jewellery in your store, Mr. Robbins,” the policeman said. “Is anything missing?”

Some diamond rings and some expensive necklaces were missing. The missing jewellery was worth $800. Later that night, Mr. Keeling was sitting in his office. He was looking through a big book of photographs. They were photographs of criminals. The policeman had brought the book to the detective's office. Suddenly, Mr. Keeling stopped turning the pages. He looked at a picture of a handsome young man with a familiar face.

The next morning, Mr. Keeling paid the jeweller $800, then closed his office.

An extremely enthusiastic truth seeker who runs the YouTube channel Bright Insight claims(声称)to have found the mysterious city of Atlantis and insists that its true location has been hiding in plain sight for thousands of years.

In a video, YouTube blogger Jimmy Bright argues that the Richat Structure, a geologic dome(穹状物)in northwest Sahara also referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, is the most likely location of Atlantis.

He mentioned measurements from the famous Dialogues of Plato, which gave birth to the mystery. The Greek philosopher(哲学家)claimed that Atlantis was a long-gone kingdom, which stretched into Europe as far as Italy and into Africa as far as Egypt thousands of years ago. The giant island was said to be wiped off the face of the planet by a natural disaster “in a single day and night of misfortune”.

At first sight, this has nothing to do with the land-based Richat Structure, but Jimmy claims that the so-called Younger Dryas theory could be a possible explanation. According to it, a massive change in global temperatures caused unexpected climate change and sea level to rise.

In what can be viewed as another proof to the Sahara theory, the diameter(直径)of the Richat Structure's outer circle is 23.5 km according to Google Map's measurements, which matches those mentioned by Plato — 127 stadia, which is roughly 23.5 km in today's terms.

Another thing that helps solve the mystery is a theory that the Eye of the Sahara closely matches the description from Plato's dialogues. The ancient philosopher wrote that the main city of Atlantis consisted of circles of water and land, which, Jimmy said, looks very similar to the circular form of the Richat Structure.

Although the majority of researchers believe that Plato's story was nothing but a moral story used to describe a failed idea of seeking power and searching for fortune, it has raised quite a few theories, Since the Middle Ages, explorers have been pointing fingers at different places around the world, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with the most amazing theories linking the location of Atlantis to the Antarctic and the North Sea.

Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the "on/off" button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the "close" button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the "close" button because they don't have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts "close" buttons are a complete scam, at least in the US-the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 199os when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren't completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control." Perceived(能够感知的)control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being," Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said," Having a lack of control is associated with depression."

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don't do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats(温度调节器)because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little" white lies", they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

"That habit is here to stay," John Kounios, a psychology professor, said," Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I've got nothing else to do while waiting.  So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?"
