北师大版英语九年级全册 Unit 8 Discoveries 单元测试卷

阅读理解

A fish that lives in America can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals got used to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.

The Mangrove Rivulets, a kind of little fish, lives in small pools of water. When their living place dries up, they live on the land, said Scott Taylor, a researcher in Florida.

The fish can grow as large as three inches. They group together and breathe air through their skin before they can find water again.

The new scientific discovery came during a trip.

"We were travelling for fun. And one day I kicked over a log (圆木) and the fish came out." Taylor told reporters by telephone. He said he would make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.

In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.

Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at a time, while lungfish(肺鱼) found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in a not active(活跃的) way. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulets and keep active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at a Canadian University.

More studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.

"These animals live in conditions similar to those millions of years ago, when animals began to move from water onto land." Wright said.

举一反三
What makes 15,000 men and women run for hours, and what makes them run through the streets on a cold day without coats? I was one of those runners.  The race is called marathon (马拉松).
I had never run more than eight miles before, and here I was training. Since the race is in April, I had to run throughout the winter, and in Boston, winters are cold. For most people, just putting on their shirts, sweaters, jackets, and hats is exercise enough. I found myself out on the dark streets, running along ice sidewalks (人行道). Even in gloves, my fingers got so cold that they looked like red carrots. My nose didn't get warm until lunchtime!
Finally, the big day arrived. The weather was cold, with ice and rain. Bang! The gun sounded, and we started. I didn't go anywhere at first because I was standing behind so many people. I had to wait for them to move.
At first, the running was easy.  The other runners just seemed to pull me along. Somewhere around the 20-mile mark I even said to myself, "This is nothing, why did I train so hard?"
Then I hit "the wall". "The wall" is what marathon runners call the special point. I knew my body reached the point and I thought I couldn't go any more. I was out of breath and my legs turned into pieces of wood.  I was almost falling down.  I can't remember anything about the last five miles of the race.
I kept running though. At last, I heard a voice at the finishing line.
"You look good," my friend Ted said. "How did it feel?"
    "Wonderful !" I replied.
For everything, if you devote yourself into it, there will be a way. I finished the race, at least, in my heart, I was the winner.

The history of tea begins with Shennong. Legend said that tea was discovered by Shennong in 2, 732 B. C/by accident. At the beginning, tea was used as a medicine to make people stay awake. Tea became a wider drink in people's everyday life in the Tang Dynasty. A lot of tea trees were planted in many places and the tea culture developed fast. The Song Dynasty is another important period for the development of tea. Tea became a symbol of spirituality(精神) and books, poems, and paintings about tea were popular in the whole country. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, people could plant tea trees freely. There were more kinds of tea including green tea, flower tea, oolong tea and black tea. The making process of tea had been improved and it also influenced the drinking styles of tea.

Over the long history of tea drinking, a special Chinese tea culture formed. When we talk about Chinese tea culture today, we shouldn't miss Lu Yu, "the Sage of Tea" for his achievements in Chinese tea culture. Lu Yu wrote Cha Jing between 760 and 780. The book describes early Tang Dynasty tea culture and explains how to grow and prepare tea.

Tea culture has come a long way and continues to be a valuable tradition. Tea is always made and offered to a guest or friend in China. Serving tea is more than a matter of politeness, it is a symbol of togetherness and a sharing of something enjoyable.

Tea has played an important role in shaping the traditions and customs of many cultures. For example, in Europe, tea has become a beloved cultural tradition, and the tradition of afternoon tea remains a popular part of European culture.
