A man liked shooting arrows (箭). He studied it very hard for years. He thought he did it best and it was time for him to go out into the world.

One day when he walked through a forest, he saw a target (靶子) on a tree, with an arrow right in the center. He went on and found more and more trees with targets and arrows in the center. He was so surprised at this. He wanted to know who did it.

    Soon he came to a farmhouse. An old man told him that he could find the person he wanted by the river. When he got there, he saw a little girl playing with her dog on the bank.

“Are you the person who shoots the arrows?” he asked the girl.

“Yes, that's me,” she replied.

“But how can you do that?” he wondered.

    “That's easy,” said the girl happily. “First shoot an arrow.” Then draw a target.”

    Jim, with his father, goes to see his grandfather. In the train Jim often puts his head out of the window. His father says, “Jim! Don't put your head out of the window!” But Jim goes on putting his head out of the window.

    So his father takes Jim's cap quietly (悄悄地), hides (藏) it behind his back and says, “You see your cap is gone.” Jim is afraid.

    His father says, “Well, whistle (吹口哨) once. Maybe your cap will come back.” Jim whistles. His father puts quickly the cap on Jim's head.

    Oh! It is wonderful. Jim laughs. He quickly takes his father's cap and throws (扔) it out of the window. “Now it is your turn to whistle, Dad!” He says happily.

    He gives the money to the old man and goes back home. His grandma knows his story and gives him a big hug (拥抱). What a good boy!

    A crow, having stolen a piece of cheese, held it firmly in her mouth and stood in a tree. A fox, who was very hungry, took the following ways to get the cheese for himself.

    "How handsome is the crow!" he said. "How beautiful is her shape and how fair her feather! Oh, if her voice were only equal to her beauty, she might rightly be called the queen of birds!"

    This he said in a soft voice. The crow, anxious to show that her voice was equal to her other attractions, made a loud caw, and dropped the cheese.

    The fox caught it as it fell. "My good crow," said he," your voice is all right, but your brain is not good."
