Driving to the airport in the early morning, I felt  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(excite) because I would spend the summer in Paris. While {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (look) for more interesting things to do besides sleeping and eating on the plane, I jumped at the chance to study French in this city {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (know) for its art, food and culture.

    My connecting flight (转机) was in Frankfurt, Germany, 14 hours from Denver. But when I arrived there, a feeling of anxiety {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (begin) to set in. I was very nervous {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I was in a country  {#blank#}6{#/blank#} language I could not speak. But when I found my way, I gained {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(confident). When I boarded the second plane and discovered that the flight was less than an hour, I was filled  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} excitement.

    When I stepped on foreign ground for the first time, I was {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (extreme) happy. I quickly had my first experience trying to communicate in {#blank#}10{#/blank#} language that I had only practised in school. As I left the airport, with one sharp turn, the Eiffel Tower came into view. I was fully in Paris.

    Hello, everyone! Up to now, we have finished learning the first three units of Book 1. Now let's review what we have learnt together.

    In Unit One, we have learnt about what kind of friends we should make from our friend Anne {#blank#}1{#/blank#}was killed by the German Nazis during World War Ⅱ. It was the first time in her life that she{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(keep)diaries in the hiding place. So she had great difficulty{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(set) down what she and her family had gone through. Though she grew so crazy about everything to do with nature, it was no pleasure looking through the dusty windows any longer.

    In Unit Two, we have known that there is more than one kind of English in the world and in some important ways they are very different{#blank#}4{#/blank#}one another. Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. However, today the number of people learning English in China{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(increase)rapidly, although they find{#blank#}6{#/blank#}hard to learn English well. As high school students, we should make full use of our time{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (have) a good command of English in order to pass the College Entrance Examinations in three years.

    In Unit Three, our friends Wang Kun and Wang Wei made up their {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (mind) to take a great bike trip along the Mekong River. They both bought {#blank#}9{#/blank#} expensive mountain bike. Finally they got the chance after graduating from college. Soon they got their cousins{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(interest) in cycling too. After making preparations, they together started their journey and realized their dream to take a great bike trip.

A Bite of China

    No trip would be complete without experiencing the local food culture. Actually, China has various kinds of delicious food,{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (include) a wide variety of local snacks (小吃).

    Without a doubt, for the majority of the foreigners I contacted, and myself included, Peking Duck, Dim Sum, Mongolian Hot Pot were the favorite Chinese {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (dish). China is a place{#blank#}3{#/blank#} the food is not only delicious, but the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (cheap) I've ever found.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}my last night in Beijing before returning to the States, I went to a Peking Duck restaurant that had been suggested for me to try. What a beautiful place! Splendid woodblock prints on the walls, fresh flowers in the vases on the table,{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (attract) silverware (镀银餐具) and beautiful chopsticks. I was handed {#blank#}7{#/blank#} menu and found most of the prices{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(be) especially low for the high quality of the food. The duck came in whole or half, along with all the little decorations that you know if you've ever eaten Peking duck—a little tortilla (玉米饼) to put the sliced duck and vegetables in chopped onion, sauce.

    Anyway, I ended up ordering a whole duck and thought I'd just take the rest back to my hotel{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(eat) later if I couldn't finish it. Unbelievably, in the end there was none of the whole duck{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(leave) on the plate. Umm, yummy!

Chinese tea is good for cleaning our digestive system. From time {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time, we would like to have a cup of Chinese tea after {#blank#}2{#/blank#} meal. Sometimes, we use Chinese tea for cooking, especially tea eggs.

Tea eggs, a popular Chinese food, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (sell) along the busy sidewalk or at a market food stand. It is not only a quick and delicious way to fill up your stomach, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a unique way to learn Chinese culture of food.

Chinese tea eggs are easy to make. Simply prepare some {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (boil) eggs. Gently tap the egg shells with the back of a teaspoon and crack the shells. Next, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (careful) place the cracked eggs in the pot with marinade (卤汁) and boil for about 15 minutes. Then let the eggs soak (浸泡) in the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (mix) for about 4 hours, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} makes the eggs have enough flavor. The dark color of the marinade gives the egg a marbled effect. Before {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (serve), gently reheat the eggs with the marinade.

Although a tea egg comes from China and  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (have) much to do with Chinese cuisine (烹饪), other similar recipes have been developed throughout Asia.
