English weather

Everybody talks about the weather in England and this is not surprising. It changes from minute to minute, so it's always interesting. Someone once wisely remarked(评论) that other countries have a climate, but England just has weather! Gretel was amazed by this talk at first, but she has got used to it now.

Last month Gretel really understood why everyone is so concerned about the weather:  you can never be certain what's going to happen. Though it was spring, there were heavy snowfalls. As usual, no one expected it. The pipes in many houses were frozen; trains failed to run; cars on the roads shrank; there were many accidents on the roads; lots of people slipped on the icy pavements and got hurt. The weather was very bad. Everyone complained gloomily(沮丧地), "What awful weather we're having! Haven't seen anything like it!". And then, suddenly, the sun came out, the snow melted and it was spring again.

"Typical(典型的)! Just typical! " Gretel remarked. "From the way you talk about the weather, Gretel," Mr Clark said, "anyone would think you were English."

(1)、What does everybody talk about in England? (不超过2个词)
(2)、The weather is always interesting in England, isn't it? (不超过3个词)
(3)、What did someone once wisely remark? (不超过15个词)

Have you ever noticed that you seem to learn faster in certain classes but slowly in others? Maybe you think it's because of the different difficulties of subjects, but the real reason is that our learning types are different.

Now, you may wonder what a learning type is and how to find yours.

There are mainly three different learning types: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. You can be a combination(混合) of learning types, but most people have one main type. Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information from pictures, charts and videos, you are likely a visual learner. Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, then you are likely an auditory learner.

Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands or testing out what you are shown, you are likely a kinesthetic learner.

So now that you know your personal learning style, the trick is to find out how to use your new-found knowledge to help you  in your classes.

Tips for Visual Learners

*Pay attention! For visual learners, this is very important! If your teacher uses a PowerPoint, watch the pictures carefully and find out what they might include and their hidden meanings.

*Take notes by drawing charts and connecting ideas instead of just copying

down a list. This way, your brain will easily connect the different concepts(概念). You can even draw pictures if you find that works better for you.

*Mark your notes or your note cards in different colors. This will help your brain in keeping all of the information separate. Different colors show different types of information or importance.

*Download the PowerPoint if your teacher puts it on QQ. This way, you canreview them before an exam.

Tips for Auditory Learners

*Again, pay attention! If you aren't listening while the lecture is happening, then as an auditory learner, you're missing the easiest way for you to learn.

*If your teacher allows you to record the lecture, record it for future listening.

*If you find that taking notes stops you from listening, ask a friend if you can borrow his or her notes or write down everything you remember right after the lesson.

 Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

*The first point is paying attention once again! For kinesthetic learners, it's especially important to take notes either by writing or typing, in order to actively get information as you receive it.

*Make use of laboratories and other class activities. Focus on what you're

learning from the experience and pay close attention to the process that you go through.

*Visualize! That is to imagine yourself picking up information and putting it into a category(类别). This may sound silly, but in this way you're “doing” something without actually physically doing it.

*Rewrite notes and reread information. Try to translate the information into examples. This can help kinesthetic learners remember what they need to know.

A Special Delivery
Ben and Sally lived in California with their two daughters. Ben liked travelling. One summer, he went to Africa on a trip, but Sally stayed home with the girls. Ben and his friends owned a company. People at the company liked to play jokes on each other. One day, Ben's friends wanted to play a joke on Ben and Sally. So they sent a letter to Sally. The letter said,
Dear Sally,
I'm having a great time here in Africa. I'm sending a special gift to you. I hope you like it. Please take good care of it until I get home.
Love to you and the kids,
Ben
On the same day, Sally also got a phone call. The caller told her that a delivery was coming. At one o'clock, a truck stopped in front of Sally's house. The truck driver gave Sally a rope. An animal was tiedto the rope. It was a baby elephant! The elephant ran into Sally's yard, and it began eating grass.
Then the driver drove away. Sally stood there and held the rope to the elephant. She asked herself, "What can I feed an elephant with? Bananas?"
After a while, a policeman came. He said, "It's illegal (非法的) to have wild animals here." Then the policeman gave Sally a ticket.
Ben's friends were hiding in the backyard and laughing. They had planned everything perfectly. They had rented (租借) the elephant from a zoo and asked the policeman to write the ticket! Ben's friends also made a film of everything. They wanted Ben to watch the video.
When Sally learned about the truth, she couldn't help laughing.

The way we spend our time can be. divided into three groups,or jars(罐子).These would be the necessary tasks jar, the voluntary tasks jar and the happiness jar.

Every day,we spend time filling the necessary tasks jar. We fill this jar with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another jar with voluntary tasks like taking children to activities and cooking family meals. Those jars are very important, but we may not enjoy them. If we don't fill them each day,our family won't run properly.

However, we often forget to fill the third jar—the happiness jar. This is the jar that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness jar sometimes empty at the end of the day? We all have days like that. Between doing all the necessary, and voluntary tasks, time flies by on some days, and before we know it,it is time for bed.

That is why each day we try to fill our happiness jar. Most days,I fill mine by going to the ballroom dance(社交舞)class. Playing music is another way that I fill my happiness jar. This week,I was happy to take part in an orchestra(管弦乐队)practice at my church(教堂).At the end of the evening, my happiness jar was full.

Consider how your time is spent. Try to find ways to achieve a balance. At the end of the day, hopefully we've done all we can to make sure that our happiness jar is filled.
