FROM dogs and cats to pandas and penguins, lists of adorable animals can be very varied. However, when it comes to scary animals, the answers are often more or less the samesnakes and spiders are among the most dreadful ones for the majority of us.

However, most of us have never been bitten by a snake or a spider. So does this mean we are born with a fear of certain things?

Scientists have been actively looking into it for a long time. For example, studies have suggested that babies find live animals much more interesting than stuffed (毛绒填充的) ones. This interest continues even if those animals are snakes and spiders.

A study published in Psychological Science in 2008seemed to show that snakes did have a different impact on babies. When scientists presented babies with animal videos along with random sounds of happy or frightened human voices, hey found that babies looked at snakes for longer than any other animal however the voices sounded.

Now, a team from Rutgers University in New Jersey, US has tried to challenge the idea that babies are born with a fear of snakes and spiders. According to the BBC, the researchers measured babies' physiological (生理的) responses as they watched videos of snakes and elephants paired with both fearful and happy voices.

Scientists then set out to surprise the babies to see how they would react. They presented them with an unexpected bright flash of light as they watched a video. As the BBC explained, a surprise like this would be more intense (强烈的) if the babies were already scared, just like when we watch scary films and jump more if we are already scared.

However, according to their findings, published recently in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, babies 'surprised responses were not bigger when watching a video of a snake, even when it was shown with a fearful voice. Their heart response was also lower, which also made it seem that babies were not scared.

"Children do not have an innate fear of snakes," concluded the study. Even if previous studies had suggested that babies have different responses to snakes, it isn't necessarily related to fear. "It's possible that paying more attention to something might make fear learning easier later on. It leads to fear learning," said research coauthor Vanessa LoBue. She further explained that it was a good thing that humans didn't have an inborn fear of snakes because it would make a young infant's desire to explore new things less strong.

Instead, we have evolved to quickly learn to be afraid of something if it turns out to be dangerous.

C、Babies' responses to the snake in the videos were greatly affected by the types of voices they heard. D、The fearful voices babies heard when watching snake videos doubled their fear of snakes.
(3)、How did babies react when the researchers from Rutgers University surprised them while they were watching a video of a snake ?

It seems that the great desire among the young is to be popular. The desire to be popular can force you into looking and acting like everyone else. You can lose yourself in a sea of identical hairstyles and thinking styles.

I was forced to think about popularity not too long ago in a talk I had with my daughter. Margy had to change schools when my busy work schedule made it necessary for me to move houses. I suppose that, for a girl in her teens, entering a new school is like spending a season alone in the tropical jungles. At least that's how Margy found it at first. However, as the school year drew to a close, one student after another came to her. I told Margy that I would have been more concerned if she had been an instant social success in her new school. Nobody can please everyone. If you try to do so, you will find values as lasting as soap bubbles blown into the air.

Some teenagers claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in a certain way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon into a larger cocoon.

I know that it has become harder for a young person to stand up against the popularity wave. Our way of life makes a young nonconformist stand out like a Martian. These days there's a great barrier for the young person who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. Well, go to it. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That's the only kind of popularity that really counts.

    “Oh,my god.Are you serious?”

That's a reaction I often get when people hear the tale of my childhood.

It's a story I don't often share.Growing up in a bad home, I learned to protect myself by not speaking up.I've seldom said anything about how badly I was treated and hurt as a child. I don't talk about how my name was changed at least three times, what it was like to live in my van(箱式货车), or how I've struggled with anxiety, depression, and wanting to kill myself. But I learned to start speaking up for myself. I went on to earn two graduate degrees and I will complete my Doctor's degree this year. I've also become a widely published author. So,how did I get to where I am today?

What's helped me is surrounding myself with caring, loving people. I've learned day-to-day skills through research, trial and error, and with the help of skilled professionals. They've taught me how to slow down,to breathe,to be thankful for what I've got. They're the ones who make my goals possible. They have also taught me to turn my past experiences into strength-to make the negatives into positives.

My hope is that sharing my story might help others to see what is possible even in the darkest of times and help others to speak out.I don't think I'm in any way special or unique. I'm a common man,no more deserving than anyone else. But for far too long,I've been afraid that others think I'm damaged goods.I've worried about how I might be treated differently.

Pain and fear teach us to be silent. It's time for that to change.

I don't know what tomorrow might bring. But one thing I've learned is that if we can hold on and find help,if we find ways to get through the day and speak up,we'11 not only survive, but become stronger than before.

Our very survival can be an inspiration all on its own.And with love of my friends,I look forward to so much more than completing my education—I look forward to the future.

A trip to Paris is not complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. To get the most out of your visit read our tips below:

    Visit at Night

Riding up the Eiffel Tower at night and looking out over the streets of Paris, you'll see why Paris is known as the “City of Light”. At street level, the spotlights on the top of the Tower and the reflections (倒影) of the Tower in the Seine (塞纳河) are sights not to be missed.

Purchase (购买) Your Ticket in Advance Online

Avoid the long ticket lines at the Eiffel Tower by purchasing your ticket online from the Eiffel Tower website.

You'll pick a time to visit and then select whether to print out the ticket or display it on your phone or iPad, a convenient choice if you buy your ticket in Paris without a printer.

Don't Bring Valuable Objects with You

Before entering the Eiffel Tower, your bags will be examined by a security officer. If an item you are carrying sets off the metal detector, the officer will take you away from the line for further inspection. Probably you will miss the chance to go up the Eiffel Tower.

Have Drinks and Snacks at the Eiffel Tower

If you're like us, after an exciting trip to the Eiffel Tower, you'll be ready to rest your legs and have a relaxing snack and a drink in a Parisian cafe. Across the Seine in the Trocadero area, there are many elegant cafes. The atmosphere is great, but the prices are in the stratosphere (极高水平). Actually, the perfect place for common visitors to eat and drink is on the Eiffel Tower itself.
