Tips on Young Adult Life

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult. Don't panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about making choices. In this way you can make healthy balanced decisions. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will show itself to you.

Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself.

It is also perfectly natural at this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.

This period is a part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life's journey. There will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not even see all of your classmates again.

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely!

任务型阅读

Life is difficult to everybody, so you need to organize your life well. Here are some suggestions which might give you some help to manage your life well.

Write everything down and do not rely on your memory.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} If you want to remember things, put them in writing, or in a digital notebook. Keeping your to-do lists and other information written somewhere allows you to look back at them anytime, especially when you have hit your head and forgotten some of them.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Try this experiment before buying one thing, throw out something old or something you do not use. Or, if you are a really pack rat(不想扔任何东西的人), just throw out one old thing a day until you can not find any more items to throw.

    Recycle and donate. Is your closet full of unopened bags and clothes that still have their tags(标签) on? Is your bookshelf full of unread books? Chances are that if you have not read, worn, or used whatever they are, they you are probably not going to use them at all.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Create daily, weekly and monthly timetables for cleaning. Organize your cleaning timetable.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Distribute tasks properly, so for example, dish washing could be done daily while vacuuming(吸尘) could be done weekly and cleaning the windows done monthly. Whichever of these tasks you decide to do, remember that you can not completely organize your life in one go(一口气).

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Just decide to get organized now, and then take baby steps. Soon enough, you will be making a habit out of it all.

A. Practice putting things away immediately

B. Throw one thing before buying something

C. It is a long and never-ending process, so be patient

D. Give them to a charity or sell on the Internet

E. It is extremely exhausting to clean everything all at once

F. To keep up with tasks, you need to work with your family

G. We all agree most of us have a tough time remembering things

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。故答案选项中有两项为多余选项。

In today's world English has become a global language. Speaking or writing in English is a matter of global interest these days, for it is now a requirement for being able to communicate with the outer world. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

    Enthusiasm(热情)

The first thing you need to have is an enthusiasm to reach your goal. The most important thing you have to have is emotional devotion(情感,承诺)with your desire to learn English quickly. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

You pass by a lot of things in English that you meet with in your day-to-day life. Things could include magazines, emails, posts on social media, websites, a piece of literary work(文学作品)or a newspaper. Read them because you never know what is waiting for you in there. You might find that a lot of things are already known to you but the content will surely be full of new vocabulary allowing you to improve faster.

Keep a note of the new words

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. It's a bit more important that you keep a handy notebook with you and whenever you learn a new word or expression, write down the context along with the word. Use the word in a sentence and note the meaning, too. Sometimes you may find forgetting a certain word or phrase seems impossible. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. So, to prevent this you need to keep visiting your pages and go through the notes you have made time and time again.

A. Don't just move on after reading

B. Read everything you may come across

C. Don't let yourself down if you face a difficulty

D. However, being a human being you are built to forget

E. You won't achieve success if you aren't enthusiastic enough

F. By following these tips you will improve the language quickly

G. Spend the most of your time in either listening or reading in English

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    Rise and shine all day

Making these easy tasks part of your morning schedule will improve your nutrition, energy, and mood today—and beyond.

    Stretch in bed

Try this even before you open your eyes. Lift one arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, and then your whole arm.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Then stretch your toes, feet, ankles, and legs. Finally, end with a neck and back stretch that pushes you out of bed. This "power pose" makes you feel more confident all day long.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

Working out before you eat encourages your body to burn more fat for energy rather than relying on carbohydrates(碳水化合物)from food. In a study, participants who exercised after breakfast still gained weight, but those who exercised on an empty stomach did not.

    Turn on the music

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. If anyone plays an instrument, and if you have a little time, morning is the perfect time to practice, as it prepares your brain for learning. One study found that both playing and listening to music help improve academic performance in 16 different ways, including increasing focus and memory.

    Enjoy some fun

Many people fear to face a new day of work, school, or chores.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. This can be having a cup of coffee as you read your favorite blog, etc. Choose activities you enjoy and that set you on a good path for the day

You've improved your state of mind, your health, and your productivity—all before the weekday has even begun.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A. Pick something energetic that you and others in the house enjoy and put it on while you get ready

B. Now you're ready to conquer your to-do list for today and every day

C. Do regular exercise in the morning

D. Move on to the other arm

E. Exercise a bit—On an empty stomach

F. Take up the entire length of the bed when you stretch

G. But if the first thing you do is pleasant, you'll find it much easier to get going

    Violent Games: Fun or Harmful?

If you play lots of video games, you've probably blown a zombie(僵尸) into tiny bits. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Many adults worry that playing such games could make children act violently in real life. Is that true?

The American Academy of Pediatrics(儿科) says that violence in any kind of media — from TV to music to video games — presents a risk to kids' health. A number of studies have shown a link between video games and aggression, including one published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2014, which found that kids who played violent video games showed an increase in aggressive thoughts and behaviors. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

But not all studies agree that violent games cause kids to act out. Another study replaced violent deaths with evaporation(蒸发) in a game. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} People who played the non-violent game without any training were more aggressive afterward than people who played the violent version but learned to control themselves first.

And here's an even stranger fact: When violent video games are released, people carry out fewer violent crimes! Why? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Steve Levitt, coauthor of the book Freakonomics, said, “If you can make video games fun enough, then kids will stop watching TV, and they'll stop going out and creating violent disorder on the street.”

What do you think? {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. One possible explanation: potential criminals are at home playing the new game.

B. Then, before playing the game, some people received training and others didn't.

C. More than 3,000 kids answered survey questions during a two-year period.

D. For example, thinking it's OK to hit someone you don't like.

E. Have you ever played any violent video games?

F. Do violent video games cause bad behavior?

G. Some games even pile up dead bodies.

Although books are still popular with teenagers, most of them spend more of their leisure time staring at their phone than reading a paperbook. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Instead of publishing whole book at once, they produce very short chapters, which they send once a week to their readers by text message.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Many are written by high school or university students who are very familiar with the topics that teenagers are interested in. Common themes are love, tragedy and betrayal, and the stories often deal with difficult or controversial issues.

Twenty-one-year-old Rin wrote her novel over a six-month period in spare moments, often while commuting on the train. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Her book sold 40000 copies and was number five in the Japanese bestseller list. Rin said that her mother had had no idea that she had been writing a novel and was therefore very surprised when she saw a book with her daughter's name on it

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Chapters have no more than 200 words, and often just 50-100 words. Sentences are short and there are no descriptions of anything or anybody because there isn't space. The text mostly consists of dialogue and the language is direct, conveying a lot in a few words.

In 2009, a young Japanese writer called Takatsu, who lives in Canada, began writing the first English language cell phone novel, Secondhand Memories. Takatsu had read an English translation of Rin's story and had been impressed by its simple and emotional language. It was a feature he deliberately copied when he started writing Secondhand Memories. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}He now believes that, in English, cell phone novels have a powerful and poetic identity of their own. Cell phone novels encourage young people to engage in fiction, even those who would not normally pick up a book. They could be described as ten novels for the 21st century.

A. Books are sometimes regarded as old-fashioned and difficult to read.

B. In response 10 this trend, some smart young authors have changed the way they write.

C. However, as the story progressed, the style gradually evolved into something different.

D. She typed out chapters on her phone and uploaded them onto a popular website for cell phone authors.

E. No money is made from cell phone novels unless they are published as books.

F. The style of cell phone novels has evolved to suit the medium.

G. Although the idea originated in Japan, cell phone novels have also appeared in the rest of world.

I counted how many foreign languages I've studied so far in my life and it's been twelve!

I always follow my interests and find ways to put my language learning into things I'm already interested in. I like to read blogs(博客) in other languages.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. For the most part, bloggers tend to write the same way they speak, so I don't have to worry much about adopting strange terms that are only used in writing.

Movies are also a really good tool, especially if you can find subtitles in the language you're learning.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}, they will still keep your brain listening and reading in the same language. Music is another way to start listening to things in your new language. Personally, I'm so bad at understanding lyrics(歌词) even in English, so this one doesn't really work for me, but I have friends who learn a language through lyrics. Games are of course also an excellent way of studying a new language. A lot of language learning computer programs include games. I'm super competitive and if I play any of them, I can be hooked for hours.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

When the initial excitement of learning a new language begins to fade, it can be hard to stick with it. The hardest bit for me is when I'm comfortable enough with a language to understand most things and make myself understood. I'm actually stuck at this stage in Norwegian. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Ideally I should sign up to take a big language exam. Each time I start getting selfsatisfied, it's time to take a new course or sign up for online lessons, or take up some sort of challenge that will require me to level up my skills.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. The best language class I've ever taken was my beginner's Russian course at university where my professor never used any English. It got to the point where I would kind of just forget about English while in Russian class, which helped me to really immerse myself in the Russian language and do a whole lot with the limited Russian I had.

A. That's really uncomfortable

B. Whatever languages they're translated into

C. I also try to think in the language I'm learning

D. It's time well spent if I'm learning the language

E. Computer games always make me feel worn out

F. Though they don't always exactly match what's being said

G. I found them the perfect learning tool because they're usually written in oral language
