Many inventions are very useful in our daily life. They have greatly changed our life. For example, radios, telephones and televisions are widely used in the world. When you turn on the radio, you can listen. But when you use the telephone, you can not only listen to others but also chat with them. However, you can't see anything at all. The television is much better than both of them. People can watch TV and listen to it, but they can't take part in what they see.

Today, some people are using a type of telephone called the vision phone. With it two people can see each other when they are talking

Vision-phones can be of great use when you have something to show the person when you are calling him or her. It may also have other uses in the future. Some day you may be able to call up a library and ask to read a book over your vision-phone. You may be able to do some shopping through it too. Perhaps in the future, the vision-phone will come into wide use in our everyday life.

The population of the Earth is growing faster. It is important that we look after the Earth. We need it!
The Earth gives us a lot of things. We also give the Earth a lot, but some of the things are not good.
In nature, when something dies, other animals and plants get food from it. Every animal or plant gives food for other animals or plants. However, animals can't get food from many of the things that we ‘give' the Earth. Animals and plants can't eat metal, plastic and glass. These things will stay in the ground for many, many years.

Some rubbish is very dangerous for plants and animals. In some places, many animals live together. One animal makes food for many more animals. If we put rubbish and chemicals in the water, the plankton(浮游生物) can die. If there isn't any plankton, many animals have nothing to eat.
So what can we do? Don't leave any rubbish in the countryside! Don't make so much rubbish!

Some people like to get up early, but some do not. In fact, it is really good for us to get up early every day. Maybe those who don't like getting up early will not believe this, but it is true. Scientists made a survey(调查) in about one thousand people, and then they found that early rising people had less disease(疾病) than late rising people, and early rising people also look healthier than late rising people, and so on.
So we may know early rising is helpful in more than one way. Firstly, it helps to keep us healthy. We all need fresh(新鲜的) air. And air is the freshest early in the morning. Besides(此外), it is useful to do morning exercises.
Secondly, early rising helps us in our studies. In the morning we learn more quickly and find it easier to understand what we learn.
Thirdly, early rising can give us a plan of our work for the day. We cannot work well without a good plan.
Fourthly, early rising gives us enough time to get ready for our work, such as to wash our hands and faces and eat our breakfast.
Late risers may find it difficult to form(形成) the habit(习惯) of early rising. They have to make an effort(努力) to do so. As the English proverb(谚语) says, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

   Thousands of years ago, people didn't know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot（战车）. But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot”around the sky.
       So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane （or “chariot”） that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths（希腊神话）, Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we're finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.
       This plane is called Solar Impulse （“太阳驱动”号）. It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you've probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals（化学制品）from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don't have to burn anything, and there's no pollution.
    Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn't run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That's a pretty long flight.

Paul is a photographer(摄影师). He went to the Arctic to take pictures for NationalGeographic(《国家地理》). Finally, he saw a big and white polar bear swimming to him in the icy water.

Paul lay down the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him! Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked(破裂), or broke and the bear fell back into the water. The polar bear wasn't so lucky. It couldn't get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.

As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes, or large pieces of floating ice. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown(淹死).

On his last trip, Paul saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened(威胁) Arctic ice, a dead bear was a rare sight. Paul is sad to see the dead bodies. Wildlife experts(专家) think global warming will have a terrible effect(影响) on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bears. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world's polar bears will disappear(消失) by 2050. In other words, polar bears are in great danger.
