June 16th

We arrived in South Africa today. Things aren't looking too good for England. We only drew the first game, 1-1. The question now is: will we be able to enter next round? Well, our next two games are against Algeria(阿尔及利亚) and Slovenia(斯洛文尼亚), so our chances must be good.

June 18th England vs. Algeria

We almost missed the beginning of the game because we weren't able to find a taxi to get us to the stadium(体育场). The game was awful! Our great hope, Rooney, didn't do much. Sometimes I think he'll never be able to score for England again! Well, perhaps he'll be better in the next game. Hope so.

June 23rd England vs. Slovenia

We didn't see this live as we couldn't get tickets. So we watched it on a big screen in the city centre. It was great there, the atmosphere(氛围) was fantastic. There were people from all over the world and we could hear lots of different languages. We met some people from Slovenia. It's Germany next.

June 26th

We managed to get tickets for the round of 16 game tomorrow. England vs. Germany. Just don't ask how much the tickets cost. We spent the rest of the day doing a bit of sightseeing. It was great but I wasn't able to stop thinking about the big game. I'm so excited.

Many kids help parents to do chores in the house.They may take out the trash,walk the dog or clean the floor.In return,some kids get money or other rewards from their parents,such as 20 minutes to play computer games.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores.One of them is Jane Smith,a parenting educator and family coach(顾问) .She believes if kids get rewards(值得)doing unless you get something in return.For example,kids won't clean the floor if they see it is dirty.But they will do it if their parents reward them for it.

"Every house is a team effort(努力),"Jane said. "A home is a living place for everyone in the family.It's important for kids to see that we all have a responsibility (责任)to keep our home clean."

However,other people have different ideas.They believe that money or other rewards encourage kids to do more chores.It also teaches them real world lessons.They can learn about how we need to work to make money.

Now,there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores.The apps give kids points and digital(数字的) gifts that can be used either online or in life.With the Chore Monster(交换)their points for real rewards,such as time to play video games or a trip to the shop." Our goal is to encourage kids to do chores so they can get rewards." says Joe Black(创始人)of Chore Monster.Kids need positive(积极的) power to make them do chores."

Anyway, action is above all with rewards or not.

Taking Root.

How many kinds of plants are there in the world? Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed great interest in plants at a young age. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wildcolours. Others hid behind rocks.

Lucy looked at the shapes of leaves as she walked in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw. Then she could compare all kinds of plants. Later, Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants.

Branching Out

At university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). Lucy believed that plant life in some are as was able to move to other places over time.

In Full Bloom

In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods. Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too. Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos a lot.

The    ▲     of Labour (劳动)

Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests across the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests over time.

Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy Braun's snakeroot, which is now in danger. Lucy's work in the protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance.

Lucy Braun lived to be 81. In her years as a botanist, Lucy collected nearly 12,000 plants!
