阅读短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

The idea behind Facebook is to make us feel connected all the time. But in my research, I've found that the truth is quiet different.

Technology, it turns out, has made being alone seem like a problem that needs soling. When young people are alone, even for a minute or two, they feel the need to connect to get on Facebook or some other social networks and chat. But in connecting, they often end up feeling more isolated. Why? Because by being in constant (不断的) connection, they lose the ability to feel satisfied with their own company (独处).

Facebook can help us keep in touch with our friends, but we too often use it instead of spending face to face time with them. And since we feel the need to keep up with them online, we don't have moments of loneliness where we can collect our thoughts and learn how to be comfortable being alone.

——Sherry Turkle, Profescer

Facebook connects more of us to more of our friends and family in more places than we have ever been connected before. Yes. Facebook is a huge time sink -maybe the biggest ever. Many people post useless stuff. And seeing too much of your friends lives can make you jealous (嫉妒的), but it won't make you lonely.

Jane, a former student of mine, who is back in New York after living abroad for ten years told me that Facebook helps her a lot. The first time she moved back to New York from abroad, she felt disconnected from her family and friends. now because of lots of photos and information updates (更新), she knows what is happening with her friends all the time.

In fact, if you are lonely in real life, you will be lonely online as well.

My 17-year-old daughter went off tocollege and having her away from home brought back memories of watching PeterPan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particularimpressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns offthe last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says,“Dear night lights, protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how muchshe loves her children.

It has been several weeks since we tookour daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting  well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it's another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on mychildren at night. But now she's gone, and I find nighttimes the hardest. Imiss her most at night.

In my neighborhood, most of the parentswhose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. Myhusband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sickfeeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complainedthat many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while wehad them.

For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 onlymade the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age asour kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. Andit's not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already wellinto college said the separation didn't get any easier. “You feel likesomething has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.

I imagine things will get easier withtime, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as Ikeep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweetdreams every night, I like to think at messages serve as a night light thatkeeps her safe.

Google's new camera, called Clips, is a small, smart device. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹子), but it's not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.

This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smartphone.

Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序) to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. "Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it'll try to get nice photos of those faces," said Juston Payne, the device's product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved "training it to know what happiness looks like". The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child's hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.

The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.

Were people concerned it could seem strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that it is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.

"This product is only possible because of the way that silicon has advanced" Payne said, noting that it was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we're likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

Bergl doesn't consider himself the next Thomas Edison, He's just a man loving animals, Africa and adventure, Yet, Bergl might have invented a tool as great as the light bulb (灯泡) ―a tool that uses modern-day technology to solve an almost prehistoric (史前) problem.

The tool is called the SMART. It is designed to be waterproof (防水的) , shockproof and poacher (偷猎者) proof. Bergl worked with worldwide wildlife groups to develop it in 2011. Since then it has been seen in more than 55 countries where poachers have forced the best-known but most endangered animals to nearly die out .

SMART works as a very simple smart phone―it lets the user record what they see, like animal sightings. changes in animals and illegal activities If a park ranger (管理员) sees something that is very important, that information can be sent to the cloud (云) and sent out to the base camp so they can take action and stop the killing

Bergl and his workmates travel to African wildlife reserves now and then They teach park rangers in some of the most remote countries how to use SMART. "SMART makes collection of information easier It allows us to pay attention to the things that really important. according to what the information is telling an,"Aid Skim Young, manager of the Etosha National park in Namibia, "thanks to SMART, most of Africa's endangered animals seem to be coming back."

Bergl never plans to make money from his small but great invention. SMART is free and doesn't even have a patents(专利).

For the first time in Hong Kong's history, an entertainer has been written into middle school textbooks. He is considered one of the best actors in Hong Kong. Yes, he is Chow Yunfat.(周润发)

The example of his long hard struggle for success has been used in a chapter in a Hong Kong middle school textbook. Using his experience, students can learn to make the most of their time and to grab every opportunity to succeed.

On hearing about this, Chow said joyfully, "I really hope that my experiences can make young people understand that one should not be afraid of difficulties and setbacks(挫折), for they are the only way to success."

Indeed, Chow has travelled a long and difficult path to reach his success. In 1955, he was born into a poor family in Hong Kong. When he was 17, he had to leave school. He worked in a number of jobs—as a postman, camera salesman and taxi driver. These experiences paved the way for him to play all kinds of roles later in life.

Chow broke into the film industry in the late 1970s. He was one of the hardest working actors and starred in a number of popular TV dramas and films including "Shanghai Bund" (《上海滩》)and "A Better Tomorrow". Since 1985, he has won many awards including Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards.

In 1995, he went to Hollywood. Although he was already in his 40s, he had to learn English. He even put chopsticks (筷子)in his mouth to practise pronouncing(发音) certain sounds. His film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", began to gain him more fame and recognition around the world. In 1998, the mayor of Chicago set aside January 12 as "Chow Yunfat Day."
