You don't have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is finding creative ways to make a change—and he's inviting bikers to join him.

Daan Roosgaarde, 38, is a designer from Holland. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog (雾霾) Free Project, he designed a special tower that cleans air in Chinese parks. In Holland, he designed a shining bicycle path.

Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo to create a new product for public use. It's an air-cleaning machine connected to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project. In smoggy weather, the machine would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the biker's face.

It's no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it's common for thick clouds of haze (霾), caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions (排放物), to cover areas of China.

In 2016, only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country's air quality standards, according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

"Of course one tower and a few bikes won't solve China's air pollution problem," Daan said, "But smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully inspire communities to create greener cities."

Are You Right Handed or Left Handed?

Which hand do you use when write? About 8 to 15 percent of people are left handed. They often have to use tools that are designed for right-handed people. So it is difficult for left-handers to use most tools. If you are right handed, try this experiment: Take a knife with your left hand and try cutting a potato into pieces. Don't be surprised if you feel awkward(别扭的).

In the past, people thought it was strange to use the left hand. Young students looked down upon their left-handed classmates. Some children were even punished for using their left hand to write. But these days parents and teachers have accepted that. In almost every school in the world, left-handed students can use their left hand to write.

What causes people to be left handed or right handed? Experts have searched long and hard on this. They conclude(得出结论) that left-handed people are left handed for the same reason that right-handed people are right handed. One out of every ten people just is a left-handed people are right handed. One out of every ten people just is a left-hander. It's simply like the color of our eyes – some people have brown eyes, while some others have black eyes.

However, may researchers think that left-handers and right-handers are different in some aspects. Right-handers are more talkative and outgoing than left-handers. Many right-handed people understand spoken words better. For example, after they listen to directions to a supermarket, they can find it easily. Right-handers are good at organizing people, too. They are also better basketball guards. Just ask Yao Ming.

Research shows that left-handers are creative and artistic. Many famous performers, like Jim Carrey and Paul McCartney, are left handed. Many left-handers learn better visually(在视觉方面). In art, both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were left handed. In music, Ludwig van Beethoven was left handed. In science, you find Newton and Einstein. The left-handed people are also really good at tennis and other single sports.

If you prefer one hand, but you are still good at writing with the other, you are mixed. Research shows mixed-handers can remember everyday things better than other people. What did you eat for lunch two weeks ago? If you're mixed handed, you can probably remember.

Could smells affect your lifespan? Female fruit flies (果蝇) without the ability to smell food live longer than other fruit flies. The sense of smell may be connected to the cellular ageing (细胞老化) process in many other living things  even people.Such connection has recently been found in both worms and flies. For example, scientists found that removing fruit flies' ability to smell made them live nearly 20 percent longer than flies with a sense of smell.

They confirmed that food smells were the ones most likely to affect ageing, as nutrition (营养) and lifespan are known to be connected in many living things. To test the idea that food smells affect lifespan, they removed flies' ability to smell carbon dioxide, which is produced by some fly foods. They left the rest of the smelling system.

This action had no effect on male flies, but the females lived 30 percent longer than normal.Removing the ability to smell CO2 may stop flies getting information about food availability. This could mean that food is not enough, causing processes that encourage flies to survive.Scientists found that the female flies from stored extra fat and that both males and females immune (免疫) to CO2 were stronger against the stress than normal flies. It is suggested that females may simply be easily influenced by the smells of CO2

Scientists point out that people don't know whether ageing and smell are connected in animals and humans. But they clearly experience physical changes after smelling food.

Most of us have experienced unforgettable moments in our lives. The moment that I will never forget happened when I was fifteen.

For the first fifteen years of my life, I was the only child in my family. I didn't have any siblings. Luckily, I had always had my parents, who loved and cared about me a lot. They helped solve any problems I met and they did everything for me. What I had never really thought about was that, someday, one of them would no longer be there for me.

One day, I found out that my mother was pregnant(怀孕的), and it was big news in my family. Everyone was excited and happy, especially me. I imagined that I would have a baby brother, and I thought about playing and having fun with him. One day after school, when I ran to the hospital, my brother had already been born. But my mother was still inside the operating room, while my father waited worriedly outside. After waiting for a long time, the doctor came out and told us that they had stopped the bleeding(流血). He told us not to worry and my mother would be fine.

Many thoughts flashed through my mind. I could only imagine that my life would be full of darkness, sadness and hopelessness. I would never again have the chance to enjoy the love of my mother. During these fifteen years, my mother was always around like my dearest friend, watching over me, no matter what happened. I could not imagine how I was possibly going to live without her.

Today, my brother is almost two years old. On the day of his birthday, I always remember

this unforgettable event in my life. I think I'm a really lucky person, with great parents and a lovely brother.
