Does your mood change with the seasons?

Some people find that when the temperature goes down, so do their spirits. They eat more and gain weight. They have trouble sleeping. They can't think clearly.

Here are some ways you can beat the winter blues:

Get out in the sun. Some experts say that winter blues happen because we get less sunlight in the winter than we do in other seasons. Some say that the decrease in sunlight can make us feel sad.

Get some exercise. A walk or other exercise will make chemicals called endorphins (内啡肽) flow through your body. Endorphins are natural "feel good" chemicals.

Avoid having too much sugar. If you are eager for sugary foods (like cookies or candy), it may be a sign that you need more protein, like meat, chicken, or fish.

Avoid holiday stress. Cut back if you have too many things to do. Make sure you have some quiet time to yourself.Get some rest. Studies show that most teens need about nine hours of sleep each night. The average teen, though, gets only about six or seven hours of sleep per night.

Get help. Be cautious if you feel sad all the time and the feeling won't go away.

Talk to an adult who you trust or get help from a doctor.

A. Eat more healthy foods.

B. Choose different foods in season.

C. Don't be so busy that you get tired.

D. Those people sometimes feel sad for no reason.

Four benefits of writing by hand

Today is National Handwriting Day! Although we don't write like we used to, here are four ways handwriting is still helpful.

    It's better for learning.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}That's because putting ink to paper stimulates (刺激) the brain.  One study from 2010 found that the brain areas related to learning “lit up” much more when kids were asked to write words like “spaceship” by hand versus just studying the word closely.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Many famous authors prefer writing by hand to the use of a typewriter or computer. Writer Susan Sontag once said that she penned her first drafts (草稿) before typing them up for editing later. She said, “{#blank#}3{#/blank#}” A 2009 study seems to support Sontag's preference for writing by hand: Elementary school students who wrote essays with a pen not only wrote more than their keyboard-tapping friends, but they also wrote faster and in more complete sentences.

It will prevent you from being distracted (分心).

The computer in front of you is really a distraction.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}In 2012, scientists even suggested that taking five-minute breaks to browse Tumblr or BuzzFeed could make you a more productive worker. However, when it's time to work on that essay, have only a pen and paper in front of you.

It keeps your brain sharp as you get older.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}According to The Wall Street Journal, some physicians say that the act of writing is good exercise for those who want to keep their minds sharp as they age.

A. It makes you a better writer.

B. Writing is good for your brain.

C. Of course, the Internet isn't all bad.

D. I like the slowness of writing by hand.

E. Try writing by hand at least 20 minutes each day.

I didn't just read a book in print, on an e-reader or even on a mobile phone. Instead, I read a book on dozens of devices. I was not trying to set a Guinness World Record. I wanted to answer a question I often hear: {#blank#}1{#/blank#}? So I set out to try them all, reading a chapter on each: the Amazon Kindle, the first and second generation Apple iPads and mobile phones. To be fair, I also read a chapter in that old-fashioned; form—a print book.

The book I chose was The Alienist. For the first chapter, I turned to an Amazon Kindle. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The kinder is light. Its six-inch screen is the perfect size for reading, and reading on its black-and-white-E-Ink display doesn't harm your eyes. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, and on average you charge the device only once a month. My only complaint with the Kindle design was the placement of the keyboard at the bottom of the device.

Despite the small screen on a mobile phone, I found reading on one to be simple and satisfactory. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, but all of the phones on which I read chapters felt somewhat similar.

If I had wanted to, I could have bought my book through dozens of e-book apps in the Apple App Store. Most are free and offer access to thousands of free e-books or paid versions. Both iPads 1&2 offer an immersive(身临其境的)reading experience. I found myself jumping back and forth between my book and the web, looking up old facts and pictures of New York City. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

For the last chapters of the book, I read the print one, which is still my favourite choice.

Since we are comparing devices. So I guess I need to choose one. In the end it might come down to Kindle. But if money is tight, go for print. My used print book cost only $4 from Amazon.

A. Battery life is outstanding

B. Which e-reader is the best for reading books

C. Shopping on Amazon for the Kindle is simple

D. Should students make use of the devices to read

E. No wonder a lot of readers also speak highly of it

F. Reading on the Amazon Kindle is a joy in many aspects

G. The brightness and size of the mobile phone's screen did vary

For many people, bicycling is not just a convenient way of getting around town but also an exciting sport. Serious cyclists often arrange to take part in races.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Each racer leaves the starting line at a different time and heads hard for the finish line. The cyclist who covers the distance in the shortest amount of time wins the race. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, because the bicycles are spread out and are not likely to run into each other.

Another kind of race is more difficult. A few city blocks are closed for competition. Then all the racers line up in a tight pack and begin racing at the same time. They cover many laps, going around and around the city blocks.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. It also requires skillful handling of the bicycle as it runs at full speed around other bicycles. The racer who completes all the laps first is the winner.

Road races are usually the longest cycling contests.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. The race course may be a straight stretch of road or a long series of roads across the country. The prize goes to the first person who crosses the finish line.

Between races cyclists stay in condition by doing exercise that builds their strength so that they can keep riding for long periods of time. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, they often join bicycling groups and become licensed racers. So they can enter professional races. Just keep practicing. Any cyclist could become a star.

A. One kind of race is the time trial

B. The race requires more than speed

C. As cyclists become more experienced

D. A time trial is a very safe race for beginners

G. When cyclists still need to build themselves up for those special races

    You are changing. The universe around you is changing. Just because something was right for you in the past doesn't mean it still is. You realize there are deliberate(微妙的)changes you need to make to keep up with the changes happening around you and within you. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Be yourself and fully control your life. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You are in full control of your life so long as you claim it and own it. Because if you want to change, if you want to let go and move on with your life, you're the only person who can make it happen.

Distance yourself for a while. Sometimes you need to take several steps back in order to become aware of a situation. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Why? Because you can return to where you started and see things with a new set of eyes.

Focus only on what can be changed. Realize that not everything in life is meant to be adjusted or perfectly understood. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} And if you can't change something you don't like, change the way you think about it.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} To let go is to be thankful for the experiences that made you laugh, made you cry, and helped you learn and grow. It's the acceptance of everything you have, everything you once had, and the possibilities that lie ahead.

A. Accept the truth and be thankful.

B. No one else is responsible for you.

C. It happens to you slowly as you grow.

There are some popular family videos posted on Chinese social media. In these videos, a young child calls out to their mother or father; the parent enters the room smiling, turns around and calls out to their own parent; the grandparent then enters smiling and calls out to their parent – the great-grandparent.

The format of these videos is being described as the "four-generation challenge". {#blank#}1{#/blank#} People from all over the world have left comments and even made their own versions.

A Facebook user named Antoine Yupud wrote, "I have to give that to China. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}." The "four-generation" videos have not only touched foreign viewers, but also given them a deeper look into Chinese family values.

In most East Asian cultures, it is common for many generations of a single family to live together under one roof. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Many Western countries tend to have nuclear families, made up of just children and their parents.

Although family structures in the United States may differ, the loving bonds between family members are common to both. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

B. This is called an extended family.

C. These videos have spread to social media in other countries.

G. That might be why the "four-generation" videos have gained popularity around the world.
