A road is just like a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between East and West. But the Silk Road is not a single route! It is a series of trade and cultural transmission routes. From the time Zhang Qian opened up the world-famous Silk Road during the Han Dynasty, until the Yuan Dynasty, it enjoyed a history of about 1,600 years.

 This ancient road begins at Chang'an (now Xi'an), and it reaches Dunhuang, where it divides into three, the Southern Route, Central Route and Northern Route. And then it ends in Eastern Europe, near the Mediterranean Sea(地中海). The Silk Road is about 6,500 kilometers long. It goes across one-fourth of the planet. (3)In fact, there is another trade road which is called the “Silk Road on the Sea” in the southwest of China.

 The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. Besides trade, knowledge about science, arts and technologies were shared across the Silk Road. The Four Great Inventions of China was introduced to the West and Chinese also knew about the religions of the West. (4)In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other. Today, places along the Silk Road are great places of interest, such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an and Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu.

    Do you like eating chocolate chip cookie？Thanks to Ruth Wakefield, they were invented by accident in 1930.

    Ruth and her husband owned a restaurant called the Toll House. As manager and cook, Ruth kept very busy. One day in 1930, she was making some chocolate butter cookies．It was required that she should melt chocolate into the dough (面团)．However, she found that she had run out of baker's chocolate. So she had to break some semi­sweet chocolate (半甜巧克力) into small pieces and added them to the dough. She hoped these pieces of chocolate to melt.

    After the cookies were baked (烤), to her surprise, the chocolate had not melted into the dough, and her cookies were not chocolate butter cookies. They smelt delicious. They tasted sweet and crispy．

    They were named Toll House cookies after Ruth's restaurant and are the most popular cookies in America today. About seven billion chocolate chip cookies are eaten every year, and nearly half the cookies baked in American homes are chocolate chip cookies.

    Eleven countries are building a great wall of trees across Africa. It is called the Great Green Wall. The aim is to bring life to the dry lands and help to fight the bad environment.

    The wall is 8, 000 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. It covers from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east, on the south of the Sahara Desert (撒哈拉沙漠). So far, Senegal has made the best progress by planting about 11,000,000 trees.

    Many years ago, there were few trees in that area and the winds used to be very strong. It was harmful to the fields. Also, there was little rain, so few plants could grow and many people went hungry. Since the tree planting project started, the trees have provided food for the local people and increased the wetness (湿度) of the air. Little by little, there appeared green fields for people to grow plant.

    The project which began in 2007 is supposed to cost a total of 8, 000, 000, 000 dollars. Many countries are trying their best to help to continue the planting. So we will be able to see the whole green wall across Africa in the near future!
