Linda Brown, a real estate agent, believes that when it comes to solving homelessness, it takes a village. She spent nine years supporting homeless people in Springfield, Missouri, through a charitable organization called The Gathering Tree, which welcomed people a few times each week during daylight hours, providing a safe and welcoming place for them to take showers, socialize, or simply rest. But they had to close their doors for the night. "One cold winter night, I watched as my friends walked off into the darkness to a wet, cold camp, while we went home to a warm bed," Linda said, "I realized I had to do something."

She had an idea to create a village of tiny houses to make sure no one slept outside on her watch! Linda started fundraising. She began by appealing to her fellow estate agents in the area before branching out into local businesses.

Using these donations, Linda purchased a nearby abandoned area that already had the infrastructure in place. By February 2019, they'd built 31 tiny homes for their Eden Village and found residents for each one. All the residents must be good neighbors in order to stay in the village, and they certainly are! Linda was happy when she learned that the village actually increased local property values rather than lowering them as some people had feared.

Linda hasn't stopped working since Eden Village began. A second village opened in the fall of 2020, and there's a third location in the works as well! She hopes to have five villages across Springfield within the next five years, helping more than 200 homeless people get off the streets and into a new life.

To this day, Linda firmly believes that there are a million reasons someone can become homeless, but each of them can be solved with love and community involvement.

My First Marathon

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".

The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realised running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finishing line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the starting line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my loyal supporter. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. 

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

Culture and tradition are the soul of a country. When a country 1 them, it is difficult for it to make 2 . Chinese culture can be seen everywhere in China. 3 , I did not really understand it in the beginning. Then I realized I had to 4 something in order to understand it.

Last winter I decided to stay at our university to 5 all the activities organized for foreign students to celebrate the Spring Festival.

The 6 began a month ago with the decorating of our rooms with Spring Festival couplets (对联) and New Year paintings. On February 10, we 7 an activity to write Spring Festival couplets. When I saw the brush, I became 8 . Why is there such a pen? How do we use it?

After understanding the tools, we started our creative 9 . I tried to hold the brush and start writing 10 , but the tip of the pen was too 11 and I couldn't grasp it at all. I was 12 , but I didn't give up. After several 13 , I wrote a line of words. At this time, I found that my sleeves were dirtied with ink as I was too 14 practicing. Even so, I was very happy, because I felt that I had learned the essence (精髓) of writing calligraphy.

Through this activity, I came to 15 the amazing Chinese culture more.

A big fire took the life of the mother in this family. When I 1 , the father and his child Mario were 2 staying in a garage. There were already quite a few 3 at the door. A mother and her daughter caught my 4 . The mother said to her 5 , "Look, this is the best jacket your daddy just 6 . This quilt is Mommy's best one. We all can 7 our best to Mario's family, so why can't you give your best? Can we change this old bear to your most 8 one?"

The daughter asked, "If I give away my best to Mario, will he give it back to me?" I couldn't help but 9 , "Of course not, once you donate something, you can't 10 to get it back."

Together, we 11 the garage. As the little girl's mother 12 the quilt and clothes, the girl took Mario's hand, whose eyes filled with tears, and 13 and carefully placed her mother's 14 into Mario's small one. Her face was pale. She bit her 15 as if making a big 16 , and said, "Mario, I am donating my mom to you, now you have a mom." After doing so, tears streamed down her cheeks, and she turned and 17 .

Her mother ran after her. The little girl, with tearful eyes, looked up at her mother and timidly said, "Mom, no, Mario's mom, I don't want to take you back, but I still want to give you a 18 kiss. Can you let me kiss you without telling Mario?" Her mother 19 her tightly, and I saw that the mother's eyes were filled with tears, her face beaming with happiness and 20 .

"A decade-long moratorium (中止) on fishing was imposed on the country's longest river in 2021 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the aim of restoring its ecological health. After three years, the fish population in the river has recovered obviously, but the moratorium still faces constant threats from illegal fishing,"Tang Renjian, minister of agriculture and rural affairs, said at a news conference.

Ministry of Public Security data show it has solved more than 20,000 cases {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (involve) violations of the ban since 2021. Over that period, illegal fishing in the main waterways of the Yangtze has decreased by almost a third, and less than 10 percent involves more destructive organized crimes.

Soon after my arrival in Luanda, I realized that I was going to have some free time available. I decided to spend it doing something useful and taking part in activities in the1 community. I started my search for volunteering opportunities here and a blog post2 my eye. It was Asthma's3 on how she started her4 journey in Luanda. Asthma has been volunteering at the Foundation(基金会) for Art and Culture for more than a year. I decided to get in touch with them and soon after I got a very warm and welcoming5 inviting me to the foundation. The next day as I6 into the foundation little did I know it would become such a(n)7 part of my life in Luanda.

I was a bit hesitant at first as I had never worked with children before and my Portuguese (葡萄牙语) then was much8 than now. But as I slowly started doing some activities with children, there were not any9 . All that you needed was a heart full of lóve and everyone10 the language of love.

I found plenty of11 to do with kids, keeping them busy and having fun. Together we played, sang, learned new things,12 new games and renewed the old. The children coming to the foundation are wonderful, and full of13 and energy. It is a beautiful place with wonderful projects. Without doubt, it is the best14 I could have found in Luanda, and I am very happy to go there as often as I can. The staff working there really make you feel welcome and15 .
