Using Garbage as a Fuel

    Garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look {#blank#}1{#/blank#}coal, petroleum, or natural gas, but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as {#blank#}2{#/blank#}energy source. Burning garbage {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( be) not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(burn) garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( build). In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city's garbage each year. The amount of energy {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(produce) is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil!

    But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(easy) , such as food and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials {#blank#}8{#/blank#}do not. Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air. Our fossil fuel supplies are {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(limit) . Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(pile) up on the earth.

    Last weekend we celebrated Jacob turning nine{#blank#}1{#/blank#}his friends with an art party. Instead of hosting it at our house, we{#blank#}2{#/blank#}（decide ）to try something new to celebrate it. It cost US $50,00 to rent a small restaurant. I worked with a store manager. And I bought{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(balloon) and a few other things from him.

    On the day of the party, the tables in the restaurant{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cover) and waiters and waitresses were ready to get to work when we arrived. We started with helping the children paint their own canvases(油画){#blank#}5{#/blank#}then create their own T-shirts. I should have advised parents {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(take)some old clothes,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (unlucky)we did not. When one child got paint all over{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(him), I felt bad about that.

    Overall, Jacob had{#blank#}9{#/blank#}wonderful time. We were able to do the art parity for minimal cost. The smile on his face at the end of the day was all{#blank#}10{#/blank#}mattered to me.

    When the modern Olympic Games {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (start) in 1896 in Athens, Greece, there was no such thing as the Winter Olympics. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(player) completed only in the Summer Games. However, there were the Nordic Games. There was a(n) {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(compete) of winter sports that took place every few years starting in 1901.     Still, the Winter Olympics were under way, adding more sports to the games and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (especial) more sports for women. Women got the chance {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(take) part in skiing, ice hockey(冰球）{#blank#}9{#/blank#} other sports. Now the Games have such {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(interest) events as snowboarding and skeleton(俯式冰橇）.

    Joe's plane landed on time at Heathrow Airport. He had {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (exact) one hour to get out of the airport and go across the centre of the airport and the centre of London to catch his train to Manchester. He hurried through the airport, and then raced {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the taxi sign.

    Unfortunately, at that moment, his luggage broke and dirty socks, shirts and underwear were all over the airport floor. At last, he could see the station opposite.

    He {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (reach) the station just as his train was leaving. He got on the train with seconds to spare. He sighed with relief—he would be home in time for Christmas.

    Newton made important contributions to every area of the scientific and mathematical concept to his generation. Born in {#blank#}1{#/blank#} rural English village on Christmas Day, 1642, he was so small that no one thought he would survive. During his childhood he spent much of his time inventing and building toys, and did not do particularly {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (good) at school. So his mother, who was {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (will) to pay for his education, brought him home to look after the sheep. However, he was always so busy {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (build) small devices that the sheep would often escape.     When Cambridge was closed for two years due to the plague(鼠疫), Newton went home to work on his studies. It is a popular belief {#blank#}8{#/blank#} on one occasion he was sitting under an apple tree {#blank#}9{#/blank#} an apple fell on his head, which helped him to understand the laws of gravity. It is now thought that perhaps he invented this story in later field to explain how he drew his {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (inspire) from everyday events.
