People realize that, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} animals may not have the same intelligence as human beings, they are smart enough to learn certain things.

    Dogs are {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (extreme) useful as companions for blind people. When a dog has been properly trained, he will always lead his master {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the right direction and keep him out of danger.

    Horses are also able to learn many things. Horses that are used for guard or police duty must learn never to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (frighten) of noises, traffic, and other disturbances. Racing horses are also quite strong. Therefore, it is necessary for those people {#blank#}5{#/blank#} train them to be very patient and understanding.

    The moving pictures and television can use {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (train) animals too. Some animals, such as monkeys and foxes, are easy to film. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} you have to do is make a trail in front of the camera by dragging something that smells good to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} animals over the ground. Big animals, such as lions and tigers, can be photographed as they bound happily back to {#blank#}9{#/blank#} families and dinner. If a movie actor is nearby, the well-trained animal will pay no attention to him. {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, the audience may imagine that the actor escaped a terrible death by the skin of his teeth.

    Family values are principles that help to define us as human beings. These values are learned, usually passed down{#blank#}1{#/blank#} one generation to another. However, they can also change over time{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(depend) upon the circumstances in which families find themselves. They shape the way we behave, they help families stick together, and they give us our identity.

    We always admire a person{#blank#}3{#/blank#} treats the elderly with respect, or helps people in need, or is always honest with others. Such{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (admire) behavior is usually a direct result of the values that person was taught by his family.

    These values or principles—respect, fairness and{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(honest) among many others—also help hold the family together in times of trouble. When problems arise, the family is able to withstand them because they share{#blank#}6{#/blank#} same idea about{#blank#}7{#/blank#} is important. When family members feel pressure from the outside world, they know they can come into their family for a comforting connection.

    Finally, family values make us who we are{#blank#}8{#/blank#}we talk about our personal character and what{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (influence) our decisions, we do so based on the values {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (give) to us by our family.

    A father was worried about his son{#blank#}1{#/blank#}was sixteen years old but had no courage (勇气) at all. So the father decided to look for a Buddhist monk(僧侣){#blank#}2{#/blank#} (train) his boy.

    The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father, “I insist that your son should be left alone here. I'll make him into a real man within three {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (month). However, you can't come to see him during this period.”

    Three months later, the boy's father {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (return). The Buddhist monk organized a boxing match (拳击赛) between the boy and an {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (experience) boxer. Each time the fighter hit the boy, he fell down, {#blank#}6{#/blank#}at once the boy stood up; and each time a heavy blow knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, “{#blank#}7{#/blank#} do you think of your child?”

    “What a shame!” the boy's father said, “I never thought he would be so {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (easy) knocked down. I needn't have him stay here any {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (long)!

    “I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (cry)? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have.

    In much of Asia, especially the so-called “rice bowl” cultures of China, Japan, Korea, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Vietnam, food is usually eaten with chopsticks.

    Chopsticks are usually two long, thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be made of plastic, animal bone or metal. Sometimes chopsticks are quite artistic. Truly elegant chopsticks might {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(make) of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also combine (组合) various hardwoods and metal {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(create) special designs.

    Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}lived from roughly 551-479 B.C., influenced the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(develop) of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(be) too violent for use at the table.

    Chopsticks are not used everywhere in Asia. In India, for example, most people traditionally eat {#blank#}10{#/blank#}their hands.
