Chuck Wall teaches management and human relations at Bakersfield College.He walked into class one day and told his students that their homework was to perform{#blank#}1{#/blank#}simple and random act of kindness.Not{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(understand) the homework,the students didn't know what to do.Chuck didn't answer their questions.Instead,he encouraged his students to work it out by themselves.

    One week later the students entered.the classroom and began sharing their stories{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(excite).One reported on helping a poor dog abandoned by its owner.Another student told others about giving blankets{#blank#}4{#/blank#}to the homeless. Gradually,more and more students developed the habit of doing such kind acts,from{#blank#}5{#/blank#}they benefited a lot.

    Since then,similar kind acts{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(perform) in schools around the world.Many schools organize a.Random Acts of Kindness Week,around November 13^th,celebrated World Kindness Day.Some schools use each day of Random Acts of Kindness Week to perform such a different kind act{#blank#}7{#/blank#}making a new friend,helping someone,doing community{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(serve) or raising money for a charity.In this way,students learn to consider other people and think about{#blank#}9{#/blank#}small actions can make the world a{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(good) place.

    Starting in 1972, the National Park Service established a policy for forest fires called Natural Bum. It was true {#blank#}1{#/blank#} some forest fires, such as those which were caused by lightning were necessary for forests{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (keep) balanced ecosystems, so the fire should be allowed to burn{#blank#}3{#/blank#} , a big fire in Yellowstone National Park in 1988 caused this policy to be abandoned (放弃) since the fire was initially allowed to burn yet soon out of control. As a result, the fire of 1988 destroyed much of Yellowstone, which is America's {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(old) and most beloved national park. Massive areas of plants were destroyed, and large empty spaces and acres of burned and blackened trees greeted {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (visit). The rivers and streams were choked with ash, and the ecosystem of the park was changed {#blank#}6{#/blank#} repair.

    In addition, great numbers of animals{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (kill) by the fires that burned out of control. The fires were driven by high winds{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (move) as many as ten miles a day. Many small animals died in the flames. The fires' rapid advances {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (give) the wildlife little chance to escape. Even today, few of these small forest animals have returned to live in the park. In the years immediately following the fires, the numbers of visitors declined{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (rapid).

    At the start of every new year, it is very typical {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (make) new year's resolutions. However, do they really work?

    Personally, I don't think so. Firstly, it's always great to start the new year with a good {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (intend) and a positive attitude, as it can bring more hope and happiness. However, when life {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (return) to normal, the enthusiasm of writing a diary, for example, can wear off.

    We often choose the goals {#blank#}4{#/blank#} are unrealistic as resolutions under the false belief that we can just be a {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (complete) different person in the new year. In fact, changes happen in small steps over time, so why not take a step back and think of something we can benefit {#blank#}6{#/blank#}?

    For instance, let's simply set some achievable goals: smile more at {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(strange), laugh at least {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (two) a day or write a positive thing that makes you happy, no matter {#blank#}9{#/blank#} simple they are. These small gestures are thought {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (be) effective to make you better on the inside and outside. So, let's take the pressure away and make a great effort to be a better me!

    A study shows that new technology is reducing children's ability {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(use) a pencil or pen. The study is from the National Health Service in the UK. Researchers said that nowadays, children spend so much time swiping iPads or mobile phone screens {#blank#}2{#/blank#}they cannot hold a pencil properly. Children are not using{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(pencil), so they now lack the muscle{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (strong) in their hands to be able to write {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(proper). Researcher Dr Sally Payne said: “Children are not coming into school with the strong hand and the ability they{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (have)

    10 years ago. Children {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (come) into school are being given a pencil but are increasingly not able to hold it because they don't have the fundamental (基本的) movement skills.”

    The researchers said technology is changing the physical way that children write, draw or make things. Dr Payne explained why. She said: “It's{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(easy) to give a child an iPad than encourage them to do muscle-building play such as building blocks, cutting and sticking, or pulling toys and ropes. One expert said {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a child isn't strong enough to hold a pencil, perhaps their whole body is weak. She said it was better for children's physical development to climb trees {#blank#}10{#/blank#} to watch YouTube videos.

    The Dragon Boat Festival is a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(tradition) holiday that commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan.

    It is a day when many people eat zongzi and race dragon boats. In ancient  China,  the festival {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (celebrate) as "Poets' Day" in honor of Qu Yuan,  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} was known as China's first poet.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} is commonly believed that the local people began {#blank#}5{#/blank#} tradition of throwing sacrificial cooked rice into the river for Qu Yuan, while others hoped that the rice would prevent Qu Yuan's body from being eaten by the fishes in the river. At first, the locals decided {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (make) zongzi in hopes that it would sink into the river and reach Qu Yuan's body. However, the tradition of wrapping the rice in bamboo {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (leaf) to make zongzi began the following year.

    A dragon boat, usually made of wood to various designs and sizes, is a human-powered boat. They often have brightly decorated designs that range anywhere from 40 feet in length {#blank#}8{#/blank#} 100 feet, with the front end shaped like open-mouthed dragons, and the back end with a scaly tail. The boat can have up to 80 rowers to power the boat, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}depend) on the length. A sacred ceremony is performed before any competition in order to "bring the boat to life" by painting the eyes. The first team {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (gain) a flag at the end of the course wins the race.
