Why Do People Enjoy Extreme Sports?

In recent years, the term extreme sports has evolved on grand scale. It can be divided into three main types: Air, Land and Water. Now you'll start wondering how they work and why people enjoy them.

Often popular in younger-than-average crowd, the extreme sports are not organized by schools. These sports are practiced mostly on individual level, while in many cases professional coaching is also available.

Now we tell you the secret recipe of their popularity:

Control and Physics: The reason why people enjoy these sports is that they are normally played, exercised or practiced in free or uncontrolled environment like base jumping and sky diving. It means while traditional athletes play in controlled environment like fields and gyms, extreme athletes have to operate and display their skills in free-flowing natural environment. For this reason, the understanding of laws of physics and how to apply and use them are really crucial for success.

Thrill: This is the single most attractive factor in people's interest in extreme sports. It makes extreme sports different from any other type of sports. The thrill one can get from extreme sports is the highest. But the athletes are fully exposed to direct danger. Thus, you have to fully understand the consequences before you decide to enjoy the thrill.

Pushing the Limits: Extreme sports, as the name goes, is about pushing the limits. The response, nerves and the control over the un-controllable are the main reasons why people enjoy it.

Man against Nature: As we mentioned earlier that it is about natural elements—Air, Water and Land, these games are loved because the natural elements react to human extreme. The passion of man to overcome the natural barriers is an addiction for these athletes.

Some of the mainstream extreme sports are base jumping, bungee jumping, sky diving, gliding, extreme skiing, mountain biking, cliff diving, scuba diving and wind surfing. No matter what extreme sports you may enjoy, the No. 1 rule is to know your limits, or you'll be pushed.

                                                                          Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Not all print dictionaries are the same, as you will notice when you select one. To make a wise selection, you should know how to distinguish

among three kinds of print dictionaries: pocket, desk, and unabridged. You should also know the copyright date of your dictionary, and

 check is special features.

A pocket dictionary is small. Generally, it contains no more than 75000 entries, making it hardly to carry to class and efficient to use.

However, a pocket dictionary doesn't contain enough entries to be adequate for college reference homework. In addition, the information

about each word in a pocket dictionary is generally limited. A desk dictionary is medium sized, generally containing over 100,000 entries

as well as extra features. For college work, you should own a current desk dictionary. An unabridged dictionary is a complete dictionary.

Abridged dictionaries, such as pocket and desk dictionaries, are shortened. Because unabridged dictionaries contain nearly all English words,

they are large and heavy. They are often used by schools and libraries.

If the copyright date of your current dictionary shows that it was published five or more years ago, consider investing in a more recent

edition. English is a dynamic language that admits new words and recognizes changes in meaning, spelling, and usage of familiar words.

This is reflected in an up-to-date dictionary.

In selecting a dictionary, check the features it offers besides vocabulary definitions. Many editions contain signs, symbols and foreign words.

Some also contain CD-ROMs and access to special online features.

If you can find a tree which has been cut down, you will see many rings,or circles,on the base of the trunk.By learning to read these rings, you can find out about the tree's life.

The number of rings tells you how old the tree is.Each year, new wood is formed on the outside of the tree. This new wood is light in color when the tree is growing in spring and summer, and dark in winter when the tree is not growing much. So,if you count the rings of darkorlight colored wood, you can often find out how old the tree is.

You can also tell which years have been good years and which years have been bad years. When the lightcolored rings are very wide,it means that the tree has been growing quickly that year.If the rings are narrow,it has been growing slowly. If the rings on a tree trunk were greatly magnified, you would be able to see why the rings are lightcolored when the tree is growing quickly and darkcolored when the tree is growing slowly. The tree trunk is made up of microscopic tubes, like some pipes, carrying water from the soil, through the trunk, and up to the leaves. They are wide and thinwalled when the tree is growing quickly and they are carrying a lot of water. They are narrow and stuck together when the tree is not growing so quickly.

When a tree is old,the tubes in the centre of the tree don't carry water. The walls of the tubes have become thick with materials which have stuck along them over the years, forming a kind of wood called“heartwood”.This kind of wood is darker in color than the young, growing wood on the outside of the tree.

You don't very often see whole tree trunks which have been cut across. But once you learn to read a cross section of the wood, you can see much more in wood which has been used to make boxes, houses and other things.

In most wood, instead of seeing the trunk cut across, you are seeing it cut along its length.Because you don't see the whole tree, you can't tell how old it is.

How Bad Are Energy Drinks for Children?

    What Are Energy Drinks?

There is no clear definition of what makes an energy drink, but it is usually taken that anything non alcoholic with more than 150mg of caffeine per litre is an energy drink. The first of its kind was Lucozade, which was launched in 1927. It was promoted as helping the sick to get better by regaining lost energy. Now there are lots of energy drinks on the market, all claiming to help boost energy levels and aid our performance.

    What's in Energy Drinks?

We've mentioned the caffeine but energy drinks also contain water and sugar. Some also contain alts and amino acids.

    What Are the Health Concerns?

The concerns focus on the two main ingredients (成分) of energy drinks, caffeine and sugar. Too much caffeine for children can in the short term cause headaches and raise blood pressure although it is important to mention that caffeine may not harm children in the long term. However, the short term issues do really worry teachers as caffeine can lead to an inability to sleep, which then affects a child's ability to focus and concentrate in class. In fact the maximum recommended (推荐) intake of caffeine for children is 2.5mg for every kilogram a child weighs, so if a child drinks energy drinks, it would be very easy to go over this dose.

Too much sugar can also cause health problems including obesity, tooth decay and in the long run Type 2 diabetes. So as with caffeine, if children are drinking energy drinks and consuming sugar in foods and other drinks, then it would be easy to go over the daily sugar allowance for a child. The thing to be aware of is what is called free sugars. Free sugars are those sugars which are added to foods or drinks, not the natural sugar found in fruits and vegetables. The amount of free sugar that a child should have is 19 grams per day for those aged 4-6 and 24 grams for those aged 7-10. So again it is easy to see that if children are drinking energy drinks over and above sugar that will be present in food they eat, it would be easy to go over the recommended amount of sugar each day.

    Selling Energy Drinks to Children

There are currently voluntary bans for shops not to sell energy drinks to children under 16, but there are calls to make this illegal. Some schools have already banned children from bringing these drinks into school.
