    Now, it seems that artficial intelligence (人工智能)is becoming more and more popular in our life, and it has greatly influenced the ways we live, work and play. Can you imagine that you can play table tennis with a robot one day?

    Recently, a scientist has invented a special robot that can be a table tennis coach. That means people can practice table tennis not only with humans but also with a robot.

    Named Forpheus, the smart table tennis robot is quite special. It can study the movements of human players and the speeds of the ball. In this way, it can exactly judge (判断) the player' skill levels (水平). Then it uses the information to change the ways to play. If the player are just beginners, Forpheus will play in a slow and easy way, but if the players are better ones, the robot will play in a faster and more difficult way. What's more, while playing, it encourages players to try their beat with words like "Good job!", "Come on!" and so on. At the same time, it gives some good advice to improve their skills. So it is both a good partner and a clever coach.

    Science and technology is developing quickly these days and it's hard to imagine what will happen in the future. "In the next 20 years, it will be possible that one robot teaches another to play table tennis or even invents another one!" Takuoya, the inventor of the robot, said.

For two centuries, the famous University of Cambridge debating society has hosted many prominent figures from world leaders to scientists to comedians.

On Nov 21, the Cambridge Union hosted another extraordinary guest—a non-human debater called Project Debater. Designed by IBM, Project Debater is a machine that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to form a spoken argument. It can even listen and answer to opposite statements, much like a real person.

In the Cambridge test debate, it argued the topic: AI will ultimately(最终)do more harm than good. Before the debate, more than 1,100 arguments for the positives and negatives of AI were submitted(递交)to the IBM website. The machine then analyzed these sources and formed the basis of its arguments in minutes. Project Debater then showed off its AI by arguing for both sides of the debate.

Over a four-minute speech, it argued first that, "AI can only make decisions that it has been programmed to solve while humans can be programmed for all situations."

In support of AI, it then argued that AI would create new jobs and "bring a lot more efficiency" to the workplace.

This isn't the first test for Project Debater. In June 2018, the machine went back-and-forth for 20 minutes against champion debater Harish Natarajan. 

According to New Scientist, on both occasions, Project Debater repeated points and didn't always sufficiently support them.

Speaking to Cambridge Independent, Noam Slonim, the project's lead engineer, said, "The AI is not perfect, but it's going in the right direction." The team hopes to improve the AI by researching why humans find certain arguments more persuasive than others. They also hope the test might provide well-informed viewpoints for society, governments and private companies.

Whether you like it or not, artificial intelligence(AI)is here to stay. It bas already been used in many different fields. And now one of them is to help find the missing children. In Hubei Province, a group of 30 students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST)arc working on a special project. They have developed an AI system that restores(修复)old photos. The clearer photos allow them to better look for missing people. 

The project was set up by Sheng Jianzhong in 2020. At the time, be was a student at HUST School. One day, be came across a missing child notice. The photos on the notice were difficult to make out. "These photos may be of no practical use even if the child is around," he said. As a result, Sheng decided to use his skills to help the missing children. And to his surprise, many of his schoolmates volunteered to join him. 

Over the past three years, the team tried to develop an AI system for restoring the photos. The team has restored more than 1, 000 photos. With the help of AI system, 11 missing children were successfully found. One success story is that of Sun Haiyang. Thanks to the AI program, in December 2021, the father, Sun Haiyang found his son after 14 years of search. 

In the future, Sheng plans to build a more excellent team to run the project. The goal is not just to further improve the technology. More importantly, he hopes to see more young people work for good causes.

Developed by US company OpenAI,ChatGPT has taken the internet by.storm. People can ask the robot to write stories and emails,translate languages,and answer all kinds of questions.It does this by drawing on information collected from a large amount of internet text.One breakthrough behind today's model is a network called Transformer.The GPT models built by Open AI combined Transformer with unsupervised(无人指导的)learning,which means that the models can learn by themselves without being told what to look at.

"One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back,very  confidently,with false information,"Michael Wooldridge told The Guardian.This means that ChatGPT learns information from various resources but it cannot decide what is true or false.Some argue that ChatGPT will be used to make fake news, spread falsities,or be used for ill purposes.

Andreas Schleicher thinks the chatbot will become a very powerful tool in the development of education.But he also mentioned,"There's a great risk that we'll just blindly follow the answers that we get from ChatGPT rather than question it and create new knowledge.If students are only as smart as a smartphone,it means educators are not doing enough.People should focus on developing human skills that actually are important,such as imagination and creativity."

Schleicher added that as a tool,ChatGPT is going to make learning much more interesting and powerful,but as a purpose and goal,humans need to work very hard to win that race with technology.
