I'm a Chinese student studying in Canada. I have been a boarder(寄宿生) with the Carsons for more than a year and a half.

The Carsons live in their own house, which has four bedrooms including the one in the basement(底层) which I live in. Judy does all the work in the house and Andrew is responsible for the work in the garden. When they go out in the evening, they often ask me to look after their children.

Judy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, lived in another city. Judy was their only child and naturally they doted on(溺爱) Judy's children. They often sent the children presents.

Last April Mr. Morris died. Now that Mrs. Morris was quite alone, I expected that Judy would want her to come and live with them. One day, Margaret told me grandma was coming to live with them and her daddy and mummy would want my room back. The news didn't surprise me and the next day I went to Judy and asked her about it. I said I couldn't think of living in their basement room any longer if it was needed for Mrs. Morris. Judy seemed surprised at first. Then she told me there was no deed for me to move, for they hadn't yet come to any decision about her mother coming to live with them. "Naturally I'm worried about my mother. She has been in poor health." She smiled sadly and added. "To be honest, Andrew and my mother have never got on well. We'll wait a bit and see what happens. Perhaps Moter will be all right living herself, of perhaps they will both change their minds."

That was six months ago. During this time I've heard that Mrs. Morris has had two illnesses and that her health has got worse. A nursing home was mentioned once but Mrs. Morris refused to go there. So up to now she's still living alone and I'm still living in the basement room.

(1)、What is the relationship between the speaker and the Carsons?
A、He is a brother of Andrew Carson. B、He is a close friend of the Carsons. C、He is a student of Judy Carson. D、He is a student who pays to live and have meals at the Carsons' house.
(2)、Why did the speaker expect Mrs. Morris to come to live with her daughter?
A、Because Mr. Morris was dead. B、Because Mrs. Morris suffered from illness. C、Because Mrs. Morris lived all by herself. D、Because of all the reasons mentioned in A, B and C
(3)、Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A、Mrs. Morris was coming to live with the Carsons, so they asked the speaker to move. B、Judy had no brothers or sisters to look after her mother. C、Mrs. Morris loved her grandchildren very much. D、The Carsons once suggested that Mrs. Morris go to live in a nursing home.
(4)、Why didn't Mrs. Morris come to live with her daughter's family?
A、Because the speaker lived in the basement room and there was no other room for her to live in. B、Because she did not have a good relationship with her son-in-law. C、Because she was in rather poor health and could not come. D、Because she did not want to leave her own house.
(5)、Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A、My Landlady. B、The Boarder. C、Family Relationships in Canada. D、Nursing Homes and the Aged.

Jack had an unusual experience last night. He is sharing it with his friends. Ken and May.

Ken: What were you doing, Jack What did you see

Jack: It was half past nine last night and I was getting ready for bed. I heard some strange noise outside while I was brushing my teeth. I wondered what was happening and I went to the window and looked out. To my surprise, I saw a bright yellow green light in the sky.

May: Maybe the light you saw was a UFO! Or a ghost! A few years ago, an American man saw a flying saucer while he was driving along a road. He also saw some strange yellow light. You have heard about it, haven't you

Ken: Don't be imaginative, May. Jack didn't see anything, or anybody. It wasn't a ghost. It was probably a plane, or a shooting star .Perhaps Jack just made a horrible dream!

Jack: I am very serious .I did see something. The light disappeared and then suddenly some “tiny people” were standing in the garden .There were four of them .Two of them ate some flowers in the garden .It was always stretching out its arms.

Ken: Oh, come on, Jack. I really doubt what you have said.

Jack: I am not joking! One of the people was looking at me through the window.

May: Really What did it look like Were you frightened

Jack: Its whole body was green. It had no ears and nose. Its hands were huge. Its eyes were very big and resembled eggs. It started at me and I could hardly move.

Ken: What happened then ?

Jack: I was able to move eventually. I ran and got my camera immediately.

May: And......

Jack: I didn't have a film.

May: Oh no!

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.  ▲  It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.

The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.

Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.

The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.
