"Every cloud has a silver lining, "It drives me crazy when Mom says nonsense (废话) like that.

I'd barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blow up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn't help herself, "Every cloud has a silver lining, you know sweetheart." "Mom I appreciate the thought, but I' m not ready to look on the bright side of this." We hadn't even left the school parking lot yet.

On the farthest side of the field I could see my teammates doing sprints training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He'd mercifully helped me to the car in silence. Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing.

As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito's pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that. When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I'd cried from the pain, but I was crying out of self-pity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this. I told myself there was a glimmer(微光)of hope that everything would um out okay, and that

I'd make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast Mom gave me a weak smile. "It'll be okay, Case." I suspected this was another version of the silver-lining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass.

We finally arrived at the hospital. Doctor Van gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run." Four weeks maybe, possibly five," he replied," and even then, you'll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible?" he asked with a smile.

My brother and I were alone at home because my parents had gone for a meeting and they had left me in charge. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. Suddenly the doorbell rang. My younger brother rushed to the door thinking that our parents had come home, he unlocked the door and opened it.

Outside stood a tall man wearing a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He said he was a salesman and asked politely if out mother or father was at home.

Without thinking, my brother said:” No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books which he was selling. I quickly explained that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parent's permission.

Then, as I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with some rope which he took out form his pocket. I tied up his hands but tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.

Soon, the went upstairs to search the bedroom for valuables. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on the his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside and I did not have the keys to unlock them. Luckily, the robber forgot to lock the kitchen window. My brother managed to get out of the house through the window and I told him to go to the police station nearby and call for help.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn't know she was going to America and would not be returning.

Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it's going to bring both of us luck." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.

"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.

"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

The main benefit you get from studying abroad is independence. I feel great to know that you can manage on your own when necessary. This ability gives you more freedom as well as tolerance. After moving abroad you have to start a totally new life. Setting in a new environment is a big challenge for you, but you have to keep in mind that it is only a small part of studying abroad, and experiences like these can help you build your character and understand the world better.

When I went abroad I knew that I had to find a job and learn to handle my money myself. I did not have a choice. I had to manage on my own. I found a job as a mail carrier for the local newspaper. Not all my co-students were as lucky as me in finding a job right away. You have to keep in mind that besides working you have to attend lectures and do your homework. Carrying mail was not always an easy job, but thanks to it, I got to know many nice people and saw the town and local people from a different view.

Besides looking for a job, I also had to find a place to live in and take care of everyday chores from cooking to doing laundry. When you have only begun with your independent life, this can be quite a challenge. You don't have experience, nor does anyone give a helping hand—you're on your own. So it might happen that the first potato you fry ending up darker than intended, but from that on you can only do better.

All the trials you go through increase your independence, teach you a lesson and give you a wonderful experience to manage in difficult situations in the future. Learning in a new environment and taking full responsibility for yourself make your time abroad quite extraordinary.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings(兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.

The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.

Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.

He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.

He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.

"Surprise!" his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air. "What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!"

"I feel better!"

"What's on your face? Are you bleeding?"

"No! I'm not bleeding." Jackson wiped at his face. "It's probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!" He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carter's room.
