The Clark family just finished Sunday dinner.

"What's for dessert（甜点）, Mom? "Johnny asked.

"How about an apple pie?" Mrs. Clark said.

"Yummy!" said Johnny's two sisters Amy and Molly.

"Well, I would like fifteen minutes of pie please." Johnny said with a big grin（露齿而笑）.

"Fifteen minutes of pie, what does that mean（意思）?" Asked his younger brother Paul.

"Mr. Dean is teaching us about time in school." Johnny answered. He was in second grade and they were just starting to learn how to tell the time on a clock. " He told us that the clock can be divided（分成）into four fifteen minute sections, like the pieces of a pie. Fifteen times four is sixty and there are sixty minutes in an hour. "

"Very good son!" Mr. Clark said smiling.

"So then may I have fifteen minutes of pie please?"

Johnny asked again when his mother put the dessert on the table.

Long, long ago there was a very foolish thief. Do you know what he did one day? When he wanted to steal (偷) the bell on his neighbor's door, he walked up to the door, took hold of (抓住) the bell and pulled hard. The bell made a very loud noise. The thief was afraid and went home.
Then he sat down to think, “I must do something about the noise,” he said. He thought and thought. At last he had an idea. “Ah, I'll put some cotton in my ears. Then I won't be able to hear the noise.” The next day he went to the door of his neighbor, and took hold of the bell. This time he pulled even harder. The bell rang loudly, but the thief did not hear anything. With another hard pull he got the bell out. Just then the neighbor came running out. “Steal my bell? I'll teach you a lesson (教训),”the angry man shouted. And he hit the thief on the nose.
The foolish thief did not know how the neighbor found out he was stealing the bell. “Why did he come out just then?” he wondered (感到疑惑).

Sam woke up suddenly. Someone was moving around in the next room. “Maybe it's his grandmother, getting a glass of water,” he told himself. But the next room was the living room. It wasn't near the kitchen. Sam's parents were away, and there was only his grandmother in the house with him. He looked at his watch. It was three thirty! Too early for his grandmother to get up!
He got out of bed and opened the door very quietly. The window was open. A man was standing near it and looking in the dark drawers. His grandmother kept her money there! He thought quickly. Yes, the radio! He turned it on and a man's voice filled the room. The thief felt scared and jumped onto the window. Then he jumped down two floors to the ground. He gave a shout.
His grandmother was awake and she called the police right away. The thief couldn't get up, because his leg was badly hurt. When the policemen came, they were very happy. “Great, Sam,” said a policeman. “This man is a famous thief.”

There was a famous church in London. It was 110 meters high. The center of the church was like a bell. The ceiling of the church was painted by a famous artist. If I had not made you run forwards, you would have fallen backwards off the edge of the platform.

The mystery stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are famous all over the world.
The detective in his stories is called Sherlock Holmes. He solves mysteries in a most surprising way. His assistant, Dr Watson, watches with admiration and then writes up the story of the mystery afterwards.
This is a useful story writing skill. Because Watson is not very clever, the story remains a mystery until the end. The readers can sometimes pick up some clues before he does! Then, to make Watson understand the mystery, Holmes has to explain it all, step by step. So we, the readers, get to see it step by step too. Watson is almost as good a character in the story as Sherlock Holmes!
The very first time they meet, Holmes greatly surprises Watson. When they are first introduced, Holmes says to Watson, ‘How do you do? I see you have been to Afghanistan(阿富汗).'
Watson is too amazed by this to ask Holmes how he knows this. Watson has, indeed, been to Afghanistan. Later, he asks Holmes about it. Holmes explains that there is nothing magical about what he does. He gets to know it all by very, very careful observation(观察).
Observation One
Watson was introduced to Holmes as a doctor. Yet Holmes thought that the way he stood and walked made him seem like a soldier. So, this meant he was probably an army doctor.
Observation Two
Watson's face was quite dark skinned. But his wrists were pale. So his dark face was probably sun burnt. This meant that he had been to a hot, sunny country.
Observation Three
At the time, the British army had soldiers at bases in many parts of the world. So there were still a lot of places to choose from. However, Holmes saw that Watson looked very tired and he was always holding his left arm, as if it was painful. So, he had probably been with the army to a place where they were fighting. There was only one place where the British army was fighting at that time: Afghanistan.

Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 and died on December 5, 1791. When he was three, he often had music lessons with his elder sister. His father took him through many different countries, where he played music for lots of people.

But some people didn't believe a little boy could write such beautiful music. They asked him to stay in a room all by himself for a week and somebody watched the room all the time. In a week, he finished a new piece of music. After that, people believed that he could write beautiful music.

Mozart died when he was still a young man. During his short life he studied music, taught music, played music and wrote music. Even by working so hard, he couldn't make much money. Often he had to borrow(借入) money from his friends. But his music made him happy and for more than two hundred years his music has made other people happy, too.

As the taxi leaves, my father stands at the living room window looking out, watching me move off into the darkness, at 4:30 a. m. His grey hair is untidy from sleeping.

Moments ago, he got up to carry my bag for me and went into the cold open air.

He thanked me for a daughter's cooking and for having traveled so far to spend the holiday with him. I told him that I worried about he would feel lonely again in the empty house.

"I have my plans," he said, in the moments before I walked out the door.

When I arrived 10 days ago, I felt it was quiet and lifeless in the house. Then my brothers and I came and filled the rooms. But, now, they're gone, I am the last to leave.

As the taxi began to move, I watched the lights go off, but my father didn't leave. Even though he couldn't see me in the dark, he stood by the window watching, beside the tree. It was a fresh tree. He buys one every year for the new year.

The life is hard for my father: my mother died years ago, and now his children are far from home, our selfish choices taking us from one end of the country to the other, the life of the tree, cut for Christmas, is short; my father's is long and strong. But both of them are tall and straight.

I leave behind two trees: one with silver-grey hair, the other still freshly green.
