    Does Using Technology in the Classroom Help College Students?

    Almost anywhere in the world, you are likely to find people doing the same thing in public places, on trains and buses or wherever else you look. They spend their day looking at laptop computers, smartphones or other personal electronic devices. They are thinking mainly about their electronic devices, and not much else.

    More and more college students have no problem walking into a classroom and immediately opening their laptops. Others may spend an entire study period with a smartphone in hand. But recent research suggests that using technology during class time may harm college students' ability to remember and process the subject material they are learning.

    Arnold Glass, a professor in Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a student researcher investigated the issue of divided student attention. During half of their daily class periods, the students in their study were permitted to use any electronic device as much as they wanted.

    The students' academic performance was measured in several ways throughout the semester. They took a short test every day, longer tests every few weeks and a final exam covering all the class material. The researchers found that the average daily quiz results showed no evidence of harmful effects from the use of technology. They showed that all the students performed poorly on questions covering material taught on days when they were permitted to use technology in the classroom.

    Glass says that it shows the use of electronic devices in the classroom prevents students from processing information. The students hear what the professor is saying. But they might be buying things online or reading unrelated emails at the same time, for example. So they are not thinking deeply about the subject matter as they are hearing it.

A. The same can be said about the world of college education.

B. However, the average results of the larger tests and final exam told a different story.

C. And that, Glass says, makes it harder for the information to enter their long-term memory.

D. Technology, in general, is not the only way that students find to distract themselves in class.

E. But even if technology is helpful to some students, there are times when it needs to be turned off.

F. Some students argue that the increasing use of technology can have many helpful effects on society.

G. During the other half, researchers closely watched them to make sure no one was using any technology.

Things to do when you are feeling down

    Let's start with a fact. We all have days when we feel down and discouraged.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Here is a list to help you get back on track.

    Take care of yourself

    This may seem like an obvious thing, but try your best to get a good night s sleep and eat healthy food when you're hungry{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Consider setting an earlier bedtime than usual and stick to it. Make some nourishing snacks that you can easily grab instead of sugary junk food. Fresh fruit, a piece of cheese, some cut-up vegetables, homemade soup, they are all quick and easy options to consider.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    If you are going through a tough time, think about some healthy comforts that will make you feel better. Take a bike or go for a walk in nature. Treat yourself to a lunch at your favorite restaurant. Listen to some good music. Call a friend. Watch a funny movie. Take a nap. Read a good book. The release from stress will add to your level of happiness.

Make an action plan

    Can you identify what's making you unhappy? If so, you have a good chance of changing it{#blank#}4{#/blank#} You don't have to figure out a whole plan to solve your conflicts; simply taking some steps in the right direction will boost your good feeling.

    This, too, shall pass

    What do you say to yourself when you are going through a tough time? Beating yourself up is not helpful!{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Examples are, “It is what it is; let me just accept it and move on.” “All I can do is put one foot in front of the other and keep moving.” “And finally, this, shall pass.”

Parents and the Young

    It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable being with their parents. They say that their parents don't understand them. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} And they tend to feel that their parents are too serious and too strict with their children, seldom giving their children a free hand.

    Parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust. And they always forget how they themselves felt when young. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up. But older people worry more easily; most of them plan things ahead.

    Young people often make their parents angry with their choice in clothes, in entertainment and in music. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} It is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own, which makes their parents worried and upset.

    Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents say “yes” to what you do. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents' control.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} When your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

A. So how should you understand that?

B. But they do not mean to cause any trouble.

C. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.

D. If you plan to handle your life, try to win your parents over.

E. They think that their parents don't keep pace with modern ways.

F. You will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.

G. For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking.

    Choose your food wisely and you can add years to your life. Our list of anti-aging food goes way beyond green tea! {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, it doesn't matter how you eat your green and yellow beans, as long as you eat them. Eating whole, cooked peas and other beans may actually slow aging and make skin look younger.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, it may be one of the best thing you can do for your health. People who eat these anti-aging foods, especially walnut (核桃), three times a week or more enjoy two to three more years of life.

    Don't panic — no one is saying you have to give up your steak — but doing a few meatless meals a week can increase the number of weeks in your life. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Anti-aging foods like rice, beans, tofu, and buckwheat nearly as much protein per serving as meat does, and you get the added benefit of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

    Carrots are the typical healthy food. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. But did you know that carrots can not only lengthen your life span but also help you look younger?

    Not only are blueberries delicious, but they're also full of tons of nutrients, namely Vitamins A and C, as well as anti-aging antioxidants (抗氧化物质)like anthocyanin (花青素). A higher intake of anthocyanin may be associated with reductions in age-related decline to help preserve your health as you get older. The antioxidants found in blueberries can also protect against oxidative damage to your cells.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

B. When it comes to anti-aging foods

C. If you eat nuts in your diet regularly

D. Sometimes your health depends on your mouth

    Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and simple. Avoid the classics, for they often use very old English words and can involve complex themes. Children's books are a great place to start. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Dr Seuss writes his books in thyme and they are all very funny. Starting with something like this means you are more likely to finish the book and want to read more.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The book isn't too long and if you've seen the film it may be easier to follow. If you like reading about historical events, Anne Holm's I am David is a good read.

    If you're not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Or, try a very short book like one from Roger Hargeaves's Mr. Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabulary.

    My final piece of advice would be to read something that interests you. Look at the short summary of the book on the back cover and see if it looks like something that you would enjoy. Think about the type that is in your own language and find one of that type in English. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Dr Seuss's books are guaranteed to make you laugh.

B. The key to success is choosing the right book for you.

C. Reading can bring you a lot of fun as well as knowledge.

D. For more advanced learners, you could try the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

E. This way, you're more likely to enjoy reading, rather than see it as a headache.

F. How much you can understand a book depends on your vocabulary.

G. This book contains lots of short stories, based on fairy tales, all written in thyme.

    It is believed that raisins (葡萄干) were discovered in the Middle East, where they were treasured. Any food that wouldn't spoil in the hot sun was very valuable. Prehistoric drawings in France show that raisins have been enjoyed in southern Europe for thousands of years. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} In 1000 B.C. the Jews paid their taxes with raisins. Two jars of raisins in ancient Rome could buy one slave boy. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    In North America, the original mistake of leaving grapes to wither (枯萎) on the vine was not the only time raisins accidentally became popular. In the 1870s many people were growing grapes in California. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Most Americans had never heard of raisins at that time. In September, 1873 a severe heat wave struck the area. Before the growers could pick all their grapes, they withered on the vine. The grapes were lost. One grower took the dried grapes to a grocer in San Francisco. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} The new accidental raisins grew into a major industry in California. Today almost all the raisins eaten in the United States are grown in California. California produces a third of the world's raisins.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Raisins also provide potassium, magnesium, calcium and certain B vitamins. Without added preservatives (防腐剂), raisins will stay fresh, delicious and nutritious if kept in a cool place. Raisins are tiny, portable and above all delicious.

A. They have been used for necklaces and as religious symbols.

B. Raisins are children's favorite snacks.

C. The grapes were either eaten as fresh fruit or were made into wine.

D. The grocer was unwilling to buy the dried grapes.

E. Raisins are high in iron, which is important to children's growing bodies.

F. Roman doctors believed raisins could cure anything from mushroom poisoning to old age.

G. The grocer's customers discovered that raisins made a delicious treat.
