Have you heard about "Survival(生存) Holidays"? "Survival Holidays" is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents.

    The reason why people like "Survival Holidays" is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. "Survival Holidays" gives them an important change.

    Is "Survival Holidays" a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing(打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled by adults, but children don't know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.

    Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. All these skills will help them a lot in their lives.

    Jane Browning works in a busy hospital (医院) in Boston, USA. On weekdays, she usually gets up at six o'clock in the morning and has a shower. Then she goes to work at seven o'clock.

Her husband (丈夫), David usually gets up at seven o'clock. He is a science teacher. They have one son. His name is Andy. Andy is thirteen. He goes to school at seven thirty in the morning with his father.

    After Jane gets to the hospital, she talks to her patients and asks how they are. Then she meets the new patients. At about one o'clock in the afternoon she has lunch.

Usually Jane gets home at six o'clock in the evening and she is very tired (疲倦的). But she loves her job, because she likes helping people.

    Billy Dengler, a 14-year-old boy, is in the eighth grade. When he was born a month later, Billy's mother, Terri, noticed that his eyes weren't quite as big as a normal baby's. She took Billy to the hospital, and the doctor said Billy would never be able to see.

    Although Billy can't see, he has never let that hold him back or make him different. Billy began teaching himself computer programming by using a screen reader when he was just seven years old. He is a certified Google developer (谷歌认证开发者) now. Google even tried to offer him a job last year when he discovered a problem in one of its systems, but Billy wasn't old enough.

    Billy's dream school would be Stanford University or MIT, where he could get a very good education in computer science. After he leaves school, whether he will go to work at a company like Google or design a software company of his own is still to be decided. However, he says he will definitely (绝对地) do something great.

    "It's a sighted world," Billy said. "You can't let anything get in the way of your dreams, and if you do that, you can't move forward and make your dreams come true."

Matt jumped into bed.His father sat down beside him.

"What kind of daydid you have?" he asked.

"It was a bad dayfor me," Matt answered. "I had a fight with Ned. The teacher sent anote home about me. And Mom talked about it with me."

"Yes, part of theday was bad," Mr. Gold said. "But there were good parts, too. Nowit's time to go to sleep. So, tell me about the best thing today."

Matt smiled."After school I went fishing," he said. "No one wanted to gowith me. So I had to go alone. I didn't think I would have any fun. But I did!I caught a fish!"

"I'm glad you hada good time," Mr. Gold said. "Think about it until(直到)you go to sleep. Happy dreams!"

"Good night,Dad," Matt said.

His father kissed(亲吻)him good night.

Every night, Mr. Goldand Matt have a little talk like this.

Every night, Mattanswers the same question. "What was the best thing that happened to you today?"

Every night Matt goesto sleep thinking about the best thing. He has many happy dreams!

Sometimes he has tothink hard to find the best thing. Sometimes it is a very small thing. But he alwaysfinds one good thing to think about.

    Nadia Comaneci, a famous gymnast (体操运动员) , was born in Romania in 1961.

    When she was doing cartwheels (侧手翻) on the playground at the age of 6, a PE teacher saw her. He told her family that she was very good and advised Nadia to train in the capital of Romania. Although it was a long way from her home, Nadia went because she loved gymnastics (体操).

    After that, she trained hard and took part in lots of competitions. In 1975, she was named as one of the Athletes of the 20th Century.

    In 1976, Nadia went to the Olympics in Canada. She was so fantastic in the competition that everyone waited for the score, a high score. But the scoreboard showed 1.00!

    Everyone was surprised. There wasn't a sound for a moment. Then a voice came, "Ladies and gentlemen, Nadia Comaneci…10!"

    The audience (观众) cheered very loudly. So what happened? Well, when the scoreboard was built, no one thought a score of 10. 00 was possible. The decimal point (小数点) was in the wrong place! In fact, the scoreboard only had three digits (数位) to show scores, such as 9. 50 or 9. 85 at that time.

    In the 1976 Summer Olympics, Nadia Comaneci scored a perfect 10, which was thought impossible before. From then on, she was looked as a hero. In 1984, she got retired (退休的).
