When I first heard about the improv(即兴表演) classes, I was torn. As an introvert, I feared getting on stage and improvising in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after finishing my Ph.D. , so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to improve my speaking ability and gain confidence thinking on my feet.

During our first class, we learned a core concept of improv: "yes, and." It means that, as improvisers, we accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that rhinos(犀牛) are librarians, for example, then rhinos are librarians. We do not question the logic; we say "yes" and continue with the scene as if no him is wrong.

I got a taste of how difficult that was when acting out my first scene. My classmate turned to me and said, "Mom is going to be so mad." Mad about what? My mind spun out ideas, and my inner critic shot them all down. We broke the car? No, that's too easy. We failed a test? No, you don't want your classmates thinking you're stupid on the first day. I finally landed on an answer: "Yes, we're going to be late for dinner." The scene proceeded from there, and we eventually finished as two sisters who lost their way on a hiking trail.

The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable thinking on my feet and even started to enjoy our classes. I never silenced my inner critic entirely, but over time, I didn't police my words with quite so much effort. I also became better at listening, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment.

That training proved useful 6 months ago, when my experiments generated unreasonable data. Early on in graduate school, I would get stuck when this happened; my inner critic would assume I had made a mistake. But then, after embracing the "yes, and" concept, instead of getting discouraged, I kept exploring the data and ended up identifying a new type of cell—one that wasn't behaving as expected. If I hadn't accepted the possibility that the results were real, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my Ph.D. so far.

All scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say rhinos are librarians, then it's worth investigating whether rhinos are, in fact, librarians. Our job as scientists isn't to generate data that support a preconceived(预想的) story. Our job is to say "yes, and."

Sharifkhuja has loved Chinese movies and culture since childhood. His father is also a huge fan of China. Before his {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(graduate)from high school, Sharifkhuja's father suggested that he learn Chinese and go to China in the future.Having studied Chinese for two years in Tajikistan, Sharifkhuja finally came to China {#blank#}2{#/blank#} ( pursue) his dream.

After five years in China, Chinese language and calligraphy {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(become) a part of his life. In his first calligraphy class，Sharifkhuja said that writing with brushes was {#blank#}4{#/blank#}amazing experience, which could help him feel the spirits of Chinese culture. Besides，{#blank#}5{#/blank#} he enjoys most is traditional Chinese music. Sharifkhuja is willing to share his experience in China with his family and friends and introduce Tajik culture to his Chinese pals.

However, no matter what Sharifkhuja chooses, his future will be {#blank#}10{#/blank#}( close ) related to Chinese.

Huang Shunjie might have the best job in the world. The 24-year-old is {#blank#}1{#/blank#} panda photographer and zookeeper. Huang spends each day {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (look) after 18 baby pandas at the Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in China. He prepares their meals, checks on their health and{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (carry) them between their sleeping pens and their public enclosure (围场).

Sullivan calls her right arm her "little arm". The 10-year-old was born with that arm less than half the 1 size. She has no elbow and tiny fingers to 2 things. However, it never discouraged her. This 3 kid could always find a way to make that little arm 4 for her. Until recently, riding a bike has proved out of her reach. But that might soon change 5 some college students.

Sullivan's grandparents saw a local news about Siena College students making a prosthetic (假肢的) hand for a little girl using the school's 3D printer. They went to see if her granddaughter could be a 6 for a new arm like that girl. However, there was a 7 when the grandparents asked if the college group could help Sullivan, as the design was for limbs (肢体) 8 an elbow or wrist.

Fortunately, Kristin, a junior engineering major said yes. She and her team couldn't 9 a perfect solution, but they promised to try. They met Sullivan from time to time to measure and test the design, 10 the initial plans to fit Sullivan's little arm. They've worked for almost a year to build Sullivan a solution. The task has been one of 11 and creativity,12 by kindness. "Sometimes you get 13 , but she is so excited," Kristin said. "Her motivation and her strength, 14 our team along."

On May 4, Sullivan received her arm. She also received a(n) 15 surprise: a new bike. 

Cara was nervous before the race. For several weeks,she had been training every day to prepare for it. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(final) the race day came. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} she arrived, her coach was already on the track. Cara started her warm-up exercise under the guidance of the coach. This was helpful to keep {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(she) from getting hurt. 

Cara's friends got there {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(early) than her They let her know that they were there {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(cheer) for her. They all wished her good luck. It was time for the race. All the runners {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(call) to line up on the tracks. {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(hear) the signal gun, Cara jump-started from the ground. She began to run as hard as she could. 

Running past the stands ,she heard the voices of her friends cheering her name. Cara kept her energy and continued to keep a good speed. When she rounded the track {#blank#}8{#/blank#}the last time, she and another runner were neck for{#blank#}9{#/blank#} finish line. As the end approached, Cara had put all her effort into those last few {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(foot). She won the race narrowly. Cara was so happy.
