Nina Martinez leaves the classroom and walks down the hall. She feels bad this morning, because she's going to sing in the school Talent Show(达人秀). She loves to sing but she doesn't like singing in front of other people.

Nina stands at the door for a moment, and then goes inside. In the room many children are talking happily. Nina sees Luz, James and others from her class. Some teachers are sitting on the chairs. They're waiting for the children to get quiet.

"Nina Martinez!" someone calls out. It is Mrs. Brent, the music teacher.

Nina stands up from her chair. She feels small as she walks to the front. Her face is hot, but her hands are as cold as ice. She wants to sing, but the song doesn't come out.

"Close your eyes just as you are alone," says Mrs. Brent. "Forget(忘记) about everyone else. Just sing."

Nina is worried, but she gives it a try(尝试). She closes her eyes and sings out. The song is out like milk.

After the show, Mrs. Brent says to her, "Nina, you are great in the show!"

At that moment, Nina says "Thank you" to Mrs. Brent happily.

Long, long ago there was a very foolish thief. Do you know what he did one day? When he wanted to steal (偷) the bell on his neighbor's door, he walked up to the door, took hold of (抓住) the bell and pulled hard. The bell made a very loud noise. The thief was afraid and went home.
Then he sat down to think, “I must do something about the noise,” he said. He thought and thought. At last he had an idea. “Ah, I'll put some cotton in my ears. Then I won't be able to hear the noise.” The next day he went to the door of his neighbor, and took hold of the bell. This time he pulled even harder. The bell rang loudly, but the thief did not hear anything. With another hard pull he got the bell out. Just then the neighbor came running out. “Steal my bell? I'll teach you a lesson (教训),”the angry man shouted. And he hit the thief on the nose.
The foolish thief did not know how the neighbor found out he was stealing the bell. “Why did he come out just then?” he wondered (感到疑惑).

It was three o'clock. A man was walking down a high street in the north of England. He was wearing a dark suit and carrying a suitcase. His name was Terry and he and he had lived away from home for twenty years. In fact he was in prison(监狱),
Terry was feeling totally depressed because everything in his hometown had changed. The park where he used to play was now a car park. The house where he was born had dis appeared and in its place, ironically(具有讽刺意味地)， was a bank. Terry wanted to have a cup of coffee in the old small restaurant where he used to go with his friend after school,   but it had become a fast food restaurant. He entered it,   sat down,   and asked for a cup of coffee. Then he felt sadder when he thought of what he had seen.
While paying for the coffee he found an old ticket in his wallet. It was for a pair of shoes he had taken to be repaired the day before the bank robbery 20 years ago. The shoe repairer was an old man then, so Terry was sure that he must be dead. But when he turned the cor ner of the steet, he couldn't believe his eyes. The shop was still there! And it was the same shoe repairer! He looked about a hundred years old. Terry was so happy! Terry told him that he had lived in Australia for the past twenty years and that he forgot to pick up the shoes before he left England. The shoe repairer disappeared into the back of the shop. After ten minutes he came back.
"Were they dark brown,   Italian shoes,   size 42?"he asked slowly.
"Yes!"said Terry,   excitedly.
"I haven't repaired them，”the shoe repairer said slowly. “You can take them tomorrow afternoon. ”

In the morning, Mr. Martin comes into his garden. He sees too much snow in the garden. Mr. Martin wants to take his car out, so he asks a cleaner to clean the road (路) from his garage (车库) to the gate. He says to the cleaner, "Don't put any snow on the flowers or on the wall. And don't put any into the street, or the policeman will come." Then he goes out.
When he comes back, the road is clean. There is no snow on the flowers, on the wall or in the street. But when he opens the garage to get his car out, he sees: it is full of snow, the snow from the road, and his car is under the snow!

Karl was standing before the queen (女王). "You saved my horse," the queen said. "Now I want to give you a gift." The queen showed him two " boxes. In one box, there were lots of beautiful jewels (宝石), and in the other, there were two chickens.

"Only one box can be yours," the queen said. "Make a wise choice (明智的选择)."

"That's easy," Karl said. "I'll take the chickens." Some of the people around them laughed. They thought he made a foolish choice.

"And why did you choose the chickens?" the queen asked. "Well, I don't know much about jewels," Karl answered. "But I do know about chickens. The chickens will give eggs to my family for a long time."

The queen smiled. "The jewels you see are only colored glass (玻璃). The chickens are much more valuable ( 宝贵的)," she said. "You made a wise choice." Karl thanked the queen and got the box of chickens.

"You are a smart man," the queen said. "I need a smart man to help take care of my horses. Would you like the job?" Karl smiled and said, "Yes. Thank you!"

The job paid well. Now Karl's family could have a good life all because of his choice.

Dick lived in England. One day in January he said to his wife, "I'm going to fly to New York next week because I've got some work there." "Where are you going to stay there？ "his wife asked. "I don't know yet." Dick answered. "Please send me your address from there in a telegram （电报）," his wife said. "All right," Dick answered.

He flew to New York on January 31st and found a nice hotel in the center of the city. He put his things in his room and then he sent his wife a telegram. He put the address of his hotel in it.

In the evening he didn't have any work, so he went to a cinema. He came out at nine o'clock and said, "Now I'm going back to my hotel and have a nice dinner."

He found a taxi（出租车）and the driver said, "Where do you want to go？"But Dick didn't remember the name and address of his hotel.

"Which hotel are my things in？" he said, "And what am I going to do tonight？ "But the driver of the taxi did not know. So Dick got out and went into a post office. There he sent his wife another telegram, and in it he wrote, "Please send me my address at this post office."

There are two twin boys. They are very different. One of them is happy and outgoing. He always looks on the bright side of things. His brother, however, is sad and unhappy. He has a negative outlook on life. The parents want to cheer up the sad child. They came up with a plan and put the two boys into different rooms.

The sad boy was put in a clean room with all kinds of wonderful, interesting toys, while the happy boy was put in a dirty room with a lot of horse manure（马粪）.

After an hour, the parents opened the door into the clean room. To their surprise, the sad boy was sitting, crying. He even didn't move or play with any toys.

"Why are you crying?" asked the parents.

"I don't have anyone to play with." he said.

The parents then opened the second door. They were amazed. Their son was running excitedly around the room, and throwing handfuls（一把）of horse manure into the air. "What are you doing?" they asked.

"Well, "said the excited little boy." With all this horse manure lying around, I guess there may be a baby horse hiding in this room and I'm going to find him!"

If we have a positive（积极的）attitude, difficulties are easy to overcome.
