In China, the 12th month of the lunar calendar(阴历) is called layue. The month is full of interesting festivals and customs.
Laba Festival, which falls on the eighth clay of layue, is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people begin Io get ready for the Chinese New Year. On Laba Festival, people eat hot Laba porridge.
There are usually eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds (莲子), dates(红枣), and three dill)rent kinds of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but a blessing(祝福) for the coming of Chinese New Year.
Laha porridge is not the only tasty food in layue. Laba garlic (腊八蒜) is popular in the north. People begin to soak garlic in vinegar from that day on, and eat it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year. While in the south, people like making sausages.
Another major celebration before Spring Festival is xiaonian. It is usually on the 23rd or 24th day of the last lunar month. Traditionally it is an important occasion when people offer sacrifices (祭品) to the Kitchen God who looks after the family.
Don't forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It means sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.

Smartphone ban(禁止) | According to the survey made last year, 68.1 percent of Chinese school students have their own smartphones. Lei Yanqin, a deputy of NPC, suggested that smartphones should be banned at schools nationwide. She said that listening to music and playing games in class not only disturb teachers, but also make it difficult for students to listen carefully. She added that students might also show off (炫耀) their phones too much. |
New uniform designs | Most junior high schools in China require students to wear a uniform. However, only three in ten students are satisfied with their uniforms, as they think they are old-fashioned and of poor quality, China Education Daily reported. The Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang Central Committee suggested that the uniforms could be redesigned. The committee said the new design could include more elements(元素) of traditional Chinese culture. They added that better quality clothing should be used to make the uniforms so that they will be more comfortable to wear. |
Video game rating system | Over 200 million teenagers across China play online games like King of Glory, Guangming Daily reported. With their computers and ipads, teenagers are able to play most online games produced in China and abroad. However, some violent games might not be suitable for young people. Many NPC deputies suggested that a rating system(分级制度) for online games should be introduced. All games would be sorted into age groups according to their content. Players would have to provide their ID numbers before playing certain games. |
