Hi, my name is Toby, and I am now eight years old. When I was five, I decided that I wanted to find out lots about the world, so I started writing letters to somebody in every country in the world. I started the project because I wanted to find out more about the world, help people understand each other better, and make the world a better place--and I still do! It's really not easy to find people in every country, but lots of people have helped me. Thank you!

We look up all countries, and I think of questions I would like to ask. I'm interested in history, stars and planets, science, wild animals, film making, writing, reading, dancing, and how people protect the environment in lots of places all over the world! A rabbit is running into his hole. You may ask, “What happened?”
Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they ran, too. They know there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee finds some food, it goes back to his home. It can't tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
But animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for examples, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs(发出呼噜呼噜的声音) when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.
But human beings have something that no animals have— a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things that have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals has the wonderful power of language.
No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language.
People in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for examples, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we don't know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we met a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

Zhang Li lies in bed sadly. The 24-year-old young man lost his right leg because of a blood disease. The doctor said that his 10 years of smoking had caused the disease. “I began to smoke when I was in Junior 3. It made me feel like a man and I thought it looked cool. Now I know I was really wrong.” said Zhang.
It is a mistake many teenagers make. It is said that about 40 million of the country's young people between 13 and 18 have tried smoking. Nearly 68 percent of teenager smokers smoked their first one before the age of 13. Those who live in big cities started even earlier. Many teenagers see people smoking in the movies. But in real life, stars like Jackie Chan think smoking is a bad thing. In fact, smoking is one of the top killers in China. Each year one million people die from smoking-related(与吸烟有关的)diseases. Smoking causes illnesses like lung cancer and heart disease.
Doctors say that the younger a person starts smoking, the worse it will be. If a person starts smoking as a teenager, he or she may live twenty-two years less than non-smokers.

As a rule, we have a test about some usual things in our life every two months. During my second month of nursing school, our teacher gave us a pop test as usual.

I was a serious, hard-working and careful student, so I passed the questions easily until I read the last one, "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

I thought this was sure some kind of joke. I saw the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark hair and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

Before the class ended, one student named Nancy asked our teacher if the last question would count toward our test grade. This was also all the students' question. We all wondered why he gave this question in the test, because we all felt it meaningless.

"Certainly," said our teacher. "In your life you will meet many people. All of them are important. They should get your attention and care, even if all you do is smile or just say an easy 'hello' ." We all kept silent after hearing this.

I've never forgotten that special lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin (小木屋) in Hardin County, Kentucky, on February 12th, 1809: When Abraham was young, his family was very poor. His mother, Nancy, died of "milk sickness" when Abraham was nine, and the family moved to Indiana. One year later, his father Thomas Lincoln married Sarah Bush Johnston, and she was good to him. Though Lincoln had little formal (正规的) schooling, he could read and write.

In 1830, his family moved again, this time to Illinois, and Abraham decided to go his own way. Abraham joined the Illinois militia (民兵组织) during the Black Hawk War. In 1834 he was elected as a Whig and served for four terms(任期). After receiving his law license(执照) in 1836, Lincoln married Mary Todd on November 4th, 1842.

In 1847, Lincoln was elected to and served one term in the US House of Representatives. In 1856, Lincoln changed his political alliance (联盟) to the Republican Party(共和党), but lost a Senate election to Democratic Senator Stephen A. Douglas. By 1860, Lincoln was a well-known presidential candidate (总统候选人). He was elected as the sixteenth President of the United States in November of 1860.

The man thinks, "I will have dinner in the rich man's house. He will give me nice food to eat. It will be very delicious." So he doesn't eat the apples. He throws them away (扔掉).

The man walks on and comes to a river. He can't go across it. He waits for some time, but there is no boat coming. "What a bad day! I can't go to the rich man's house today," he thinks.

The man has to go back home. He doesn't have any food at home. He is very hungry. He thinks of the apples. He goes back to the tree. He is very happy to see them near the tree, and he eats them quickly.

The story tells us: Do not throw away good things; you may need them some other time.
