It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy's family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.

    “And how can I help you, little lady?” Pappy's voice was joyful.

    “Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I'd like to buy a present, sir.”

    “Well, let's see,” Pappy said, “who is this present for?”

    “My grandpa. It's for my grandpa. But I don't know what to get.”

    Pappy began to make suggestions. “How about a pocket watch? It's in good condition.” The little girl didn't answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy's face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.

    “This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says grandpa loves music.”

    Just then, Pappy's expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl's heart, he told her, “I'm sorry, Missy. That's not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”

    The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “No, I don't think so.”

    In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

    The next day, he went to work as usual. Everything seemed normal: he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did. But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5：00 pm, the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However, at that moment, Jack was in the bathroom, and the guards didn't notice him, of course. When the noises coming from the street were replaced by silence and everything turned dark, Jack came out from the bathroom. He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase.

    He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days. Using a special key and some other tools, he then easily opened the doors of the safes. The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money. Several minutes later, Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money.

When most people look back on middle school, they remember their best friends, and so do I. But what I remember may be a little different. Let me explain.

My heart was pounding when I climbed onto the school bus on the first day of middle school. As I was looking for a seat, my eyes landed on two girls sitting together. They smiled at me and pointed to the seat next to theirs.

I sat down and we chatted. They were Heather and Jessica. It turned out that we had the first period together and we became friends. We ate lunch together, hung out in the park and played games in Jessica's room on weekends. But our friendship wasn't without its faults. Jessica had an "I'm-the-boss" personality. She always had to be in charge.

One time, the three of us went to the mall. I wanted to go to Abercrombie. But Jessica rolled her eyes and told me to go to Rave. Not wanting to argue, I followed her.

Jessica gave me a death glare so I made my way to the dressing room.

I ended up spending fifty dollars on a skirt that I didn't even like, just to make Jessica happy. Throughout the following year, this was how it was. If Jessica went somewhere, Heather and I went there too. I found I was behaving as a pretended version of myself just to please Jessica and to keep her from being mad at me.

Then, summer came. Jessica invited Heather and me to go to Cape Cod with her. I decided to go to Florida with another friend instead, so Jessica got angry. I went to Florida and didn't hear from her.

"Were you Mark's math teacher?" an old man came to my office and asked. I nodded. "Mark talked about you a lot. I want to show you something," he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it. "

Opening the wallet, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. And that happened 20 years ago.

Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy­to­be­alive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.

Mark also talked without stopping. I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving. "Thank you for correcting me, Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.

One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. I made a new teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut！"

It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck shouted, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it.

Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group —the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits（不合群的人）!

There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group.
