Think about different ways that people use the wind. We can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Windmills began to be used in seventeen century BC.At first, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat flour and get water out of the deep underground.
When Benjamin Franking found electricity in the late 1800s, people began to use it in many different ways, like electric lights and radios. However, when electricity was everywhere by the 1940s, windmills were used. During the 1970s, people started worrying about the when coal and gas are burned to make electricity. People also realized that there were not enough coal and gas for us to use. Then people started to reuse windmills, though it means costs.
Three explorers (探险家), an English, an American and an Australian were lost in jungle (丛林). They had left their homes six months before to explore the jungle and got lost. They had no food left, and they were ill and weak. They knew that if they did not find a village soon, they would die. Then during the night, they were visited by a jungle spirit (神灵). "I am the spirit of the jungle," it said. "I feel sorry for you. You may have three wishes. " "Does that mean three wishes each, or three wishes among us?" the American explorer asked. "I will give each of you one wish," the jungle spirit said. The English explorer who was very polite, said to the American and the Australian explorers, "Please you wish first." The Australian explorer, who was almost as polite as the English explorer, said, "Please you wish first. ""Very well, " the English explorer said, "I don't have to think for a minute. I know exactly what to wish for. I wish to be back home with my wife and family " Soon he disappeared. "That's wonderful," the Australian explorer said. "My wish is similar. I'd like to be back in Australia." Soon he disappeared, too.
The American was left alone. "And what's your wish?" the jungle spirit asked him. "Those two explorers are nice men," the American explorer said. "We become close friends. To tell the truth, I am feeling rather lonely here without them. I wish they were back here again. "
My father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations (对话) through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, "You should have goals (目标) like climbing the mountain." Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn't have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from mountain-climbing. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience (耐心).
Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging (挑战的) for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds' singing, but as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing. In fact, I hated it at that mountain, but my father said to me, "You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can't see it before you reach the top. Only there at the top, can you see all of the nice things, just like in life."
At that time, I was too young to understand his words. But later after that, I got new hope and confidence. I found myself standing at the top of the sky, which was as clear as crystal(水晶的).
Do you know Eskimos(爱斯基摩人)? Let me tell you something about their 1 . The Eskimos live near the North Pole(北极). There are only two seasons there: winter and summer. There are no spring 2 autumn there. The winter nights are long. You can't 3 the sun for more than two months, even at noon. The summer days are long. For more than two months, the sun never 4 and there is no night.
Near the North Pole, trees can't grow for it is too cold there. The Eskimos have to make their houses from skins, stones or snow. When they go out in a storm(风暴) and can't get home, they make houses of 5 . They leave these white houses when the storm is over. Life is 6 for the Eskimos, but they still like to live there.
My hobby is playing chess—one of the greatest games in the world. My mum t me to play when I was seven years old. She beat me every time for the first year. But then, on my eleventh birthday, I w for the first time. Now I am always the winner between us.
It takes about a day to learn the r. But if you want to be good, you have to practice for years. You don't need much to play chess—just a chess set (一盘棋) and someone to play w. Chess sets will be very cheap, or quite e. Some people collect chess sets as a hobby, but I prefer to play.
There is a chess club in our school. We meet every week to play with each other. I am the best p in the club, and the captain of the school chess team. This year we got the All English Schools' Championship(锦标赛).
I'm s up my money to buy a chess computer. It's very good for practice, and I'm sure I'll make more progress.
"Dreams (梦) may be more important than sleep. We all need to dream," some scientists say.
Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in colour. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer.
Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They may have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.
Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can't remember the dream.
Too much dreaming can be harmful. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind works hard when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.
